/CRT/ general: NEC edition
previous thread >>7325824

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

I saw a vid on tiny colored CRTs (pic related) and it gave me this autistic idea. What if we found a way to make CRTs again, but we make the tubes tiny to reduce the cost? Make the shadowmask the size of a regular CRT, cut the tube into a perfect square, stack the tubes into a grid and link them together to make one bigger screen. Essentially it could be a frame that has a bunch of tiny CRTs plugged in like a lightbulb to make a bigger screen
There would be a lot of advantages to this:
>manufacturing would be much cheaper than a regular size tube
>Shipping would be far easier
>if you get burn-in or one stops working, you can just swap the bad tube out with a new one
>probably much safer to work with comparatively to a regular tube
>make any size or aspect ratio screen
>could probably fit the tubes and electronics into a much thinner case giving you a "flatscreen" CRT.

Do you guys think its a good idea?

Yep, also PC VGA monitors are even sharper than PVM, the only thing is that they don't have visible scanlines as PVM or BVM do, but you could add software scanline and they will look damn good, or with custom GPU drivers you can set the monitor to output to 240p and get natural scanlines if your monitor supports 240p at 120hz (Most of them do)

Also with something like a GBS-Control you can connect any console to ut.

I've never liked these. They work well for 3D games like late 5th gen and the 6th gen games but anything before that looks like shit. So if you're going to be playing like Ocarina or Sonic Adventure go for it.
If you're going to be playing SNES and Megadrive games you'll want something with brighter leakier phosphors and heavier slot mask and scanlines, these give an image that's too smooth and clean

Quick question, anyone seen this kind of horizontal line before? Look at the left side of the screen. It's much more noticeable in real life but it only shows up once in a while. Is it interference? For 8 and 16bit systems, VC and standalone emulators are almost identical.
On the VC most games only run at 480i, standalone emulators can output at a native 240p and have way more options, so just use that instead.

Scanlines are literally the beam lighting the phosphors.
You should talk about scanline effect.

And yes, 480p on a high resolution / high TVL display will produce a scanline effect due to the beam being thin enough to not overlap.

repostan from sqt on /g/:
I just picked up a Trinitron KV-32HS510 in fuckin awesome condition (with working remote and manual) for $50. I want ot hook it up to my PC via the DVI-D port on the back. I didn't have long enough DVI cable, so I used HDMI with an adapter. The TV shows up in my PC's list of displays and I can select a resolution and suck in the GPU control panel, but I can't seem to find the right input on the TV for the picture to come through; maybe it's not detecting input on the DVI port. Any suggestions?

>Enter Sadler and his company, Dotronix Technology in New Brighton, Minn. Dotronix specializes in cathode ray tube monitors, or CRTs, the technology pushed out by the arrival of flat screens in the early 2000s. Sadler’s business almost went under at the start of the century, until the Museum of Modern Art in New York came knocking.
>Those working on the issue worry that the parts needed to keep the monitors running and the engineers with the knowledge to fix them will soon no longer exist. That’s only a matter of time, Sadler said.
>Sadler had CRTs and processors in stock when the market collapsed in the early 2000s. He actively searches for companies that have shelved their working CRTs and scours e-Bay and other websites for parts.
>“Once the picture tubes are gone, that’s a showstopper,” he added. “I don’t know what the museums are going to do in the future. Convince the artists to go to a flat panel? Not much you can do.”

https://www.retrotink.com/product-page/rgb2comp
https://github.com/ramapcsx2/gbs-control/wiki/Inputs:-SCART-adapter,-optional-sync-stripper
If you need composite/S-video inputs you'll need a Koryuu to convert the signal to component.

Fair warning that if you use this you have to disable the sync watcher feature, then reload your profile in GBS-Control until the signal is stable.

Hello, I'm new here and it's my first time trying to set up a CRT. I've tried connecting my ps4, switch and pc on my philips 14pt1482 but I'm not getting any audio. I'm using a cheap hdmi to rca converter I found online with stereo output, my tv only has mono. The video seems to be working fine but I'm not getting any audio even after trying a Y splitter, or just connecting the white one. The speakers do work but I'm not sure if there's a problem with my audio port or my setup is just wrong. I don't mind buying it another speaker but I'd rather not if I actually don't have to.

have you tested the audio on the TV with a source that's not your shoddy HDMI adapter? Sounds like the TV might be busted. Anyways there's almost no benefit to using a CRT when you're using a shitty adapter, pilarboxing, etc. You'd be better off with a VGA monitor connected to your PC.

>> No.7426670

Pretty sure the speaker itself works fine because I've tried using it as a regular tv. The problem is I don't have anything else that has an actual rca output so I can't test if it's just the port that's the issue. Anyways, if there's nothing I could do about it then I'll just plug a headset on the console or pc itself.

>> No.7426680

if you have any audio equipment you can also run the headphone output into an amp or your PC or something but that's not ideal. Does the Xbox logo startup look normal? That should always be 480i unless someone did a BIOS mod to your console.

I usually use front speakers from old surround sets. They usually have magnetic shielding and can be found at thrift stores everywhere for like $5. Plug them in using pic related.
Have used with bvms, as they have no speakers at all. Have used them with pvm 2030s without the amp, which works great.
I've used with pvm-20L2 as that's strictly mono.
It works great and you can swap out speakers as wanted.

I played many of hours of psx on the pvm-20n5u brother of that monitor and had no complaints. I looked into rgb modding it for a while and the schematics make it seem very easy. The boards are exactly the same as the n6 units, with components just not being populated for the budget n5s. You'd have to drill a hole in the housing to attach a button but it's all super easy as far as mods go. I gave up on it when I found cam into a handful of bvm/pvms that had native rgb support and sold the n5.

nah, laserdisc was awesome but it didn't really have a future. The MUSE discs and squeeze releases were good but certainly wouldn't have been better than what we have now.

turns out my grandma had a RCA Truflat CRT, gunna pick it up when the snow melts. Don't really know how good it is for retro gaming but considering I dont have a CRT at all it seems like an upgrade

>> No.7451935

I don't have room for CRT (computer) monitor currently but when I move to bigger house I'm gonna get one. Is there some specific manufacturers or models to watch for? What refresh rate it should at least be so it doesn't flicker? And if I get an high refresh rate one, lets say 200Hz one, do I need to feed it with 200Hz or can they upscale the refresh rate like TV's? I haven't ever used anything over 1080p/60Hz and I'm pretty sure my gtx970 can handle higher refresh rates, but not so sure about my celeron retro computer with a shitty graphics card.

I'm in contact with someone selling an 8 inch PVM-8042Q at a decent price and I have a bunch of modded consoles, Raspberry Pis, and a couple spare VHS players.
The guy is selling it with the power cable and I'm close to pulling the trigger but it's still a penny or two and I'm always a little skittish spending money on anything over 100 bucks.
Is it a meme?
I already have a larger CRT under my HD TV but I would like a small portable PVM to slide next to my OC monitor on long desk I have.

I would hold out for a bigger size as other anons have suggested. 8" is fucking tiny and consequently will probably not see enough use to justify a large price tag. 13/14" is, in my opinion, the smallest PVM size worth paying for.

Welp, I finally got a CRT. It's an Akai CFTD2085. Not the best, but not the worst. Samsung later sold these under the same model number. I like the look, but dislike the lack of VCR door. The VCR does work though. The sides are a little wavy on the picture but I'm hoping that's a side effect of me putting it in my compact car tilted and driving 30 miles with it.

Well, it's something. If you live in an area that permits it, I recommend dumping it for something better if the opportunity should arise. You'd be much better off with a Sony, JVC, Toshiba, Panasonic, or even a Philips or something. Try to snag one with more than just composite if you can, unless that doesn't matter to you.

Not unless you can lowball the asking price, in my opinion. A good consumer set with light use is going to blow those memes out of the water in terms of picture quality. Not to mention the fact that you can get larger sets more easily and they won't be priced so highly. But follow your heart

Keep your eye out for a good one even if you can't fit it into your setup yet. I see Viewsonic monitors in half the instances where I live. It's a good brand. In regard to flicker, I think you should be satisfied so long as it runs at or above 70Hz. It's noticeable at 60Hz. To get the most out of your monitor, you will need a good adapter. I use this thing:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0849FTBXQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The StarTech DP2VGAHD20 has enough bandwidth to handle higher resolutions and refresh rates. And it's cheaper than some alternatives. If you ever plan to use a crt monitor with a card more recent than the 980ti, you'll need one of these.

>>7451958
These are some of the best monitors you can find but a lot of people know about them so it's not easy to find them at a fair price if you can find them at all. I have seen a fair amount of dell and ibm flat tubes though
