This one was always kind of soured for me by the animation of the main sprite. I'm not overly sold on his design at all, but once he's moving I find it all the more offputting.

It's a shame too, as the rest of the game is gorgeous. Got to love those copper backgrounds on Amiga stuff - just beautiful. Seeing them on an LCD through emulation just don't quite do them justice either. I was amazed all over again when I fired up my A1200 on its old Philips monitor.

Metal Slug is gorgeous even with slowdown. I can't recall Metal Slug ever slowing down for me because I've always emulated it.
Did it slow down on hardware? Irem's Gunforce 2 tries to have a lot of sprites on screen and it can get very sluggish.

For those of you guys not in the know, Gunforce is the precursor to Metal Slug before the crew left Irem to form Nazca.

I was about to write the same. To bad they grow worse over the time, especially KoF2002/2003 are really bland. Capcom did the same, though. As much as I like SFIII, the backgrounds were a massive step down from the Alpha series, imo.

Games really did look like that back then. Here's a DOS game that was displayed line doubled to 400p so it had clear pixels, using the exact same art techniques (eg. dithered fake transparency) as a console game.
