I have minimal experience with the Breath of Fire series, having played the first two games a little bit when I was a kid as my cousin owned them. I saw him play them quite frequently, though I don't remember a whole lot about them.

I'd like to get into them, but I'm not sure if I should start at the beginning or not. I'm most interested in III and IV, but if you guys say that I should start from the first game, that's what I'll do. Let me know.

>> No.740990

III is probably the best one but you'll need to be patient with it at the start. Avoid 5 at all costs.

>> No.740995

5 isn't really "avoid at all costs", just don't expect it to be anything like the previous BOF games. It's completely different in all aspects, but it's not a bad game.

It's like DmC. Compared to Devil May Cry, it's fucking trash. On its own, it's a solid action game.

Wow, eat a fucking dick. Was the serious dungeon crawling too hardcore for you? Or were there not enough furry characters for you to masturbate?

V isn't retro, but since this fuckwad went and shat over it, I will have to fix this here and now. BoFV is a strange game, but it's a great one. It's gloomy, it's lonely, it's depressing, it's terribly punishing.

It's a full-scale JRPG that unlocks new content if you get completely stuck and choose to restart after a game over, and you need a one-time, unpurchasable items to save. In a dongeon crawler/JRPG. Yes, it's that kind of "hardcore", the REAL kind. This >>740990 sad shit just wasn't up to par.

despite a sub-par translation, 2 was a great game. you might want to browse a guide, as there are missable thingsw that make a huge impact ( shamans. just find a short shaman guide so you don't spoil anything else) one was pretty sweet, but i didn't enjoy it as much as 2. personally, i'd play them in this order--- 2,3,1,4. 3 was fucking EXCELLENT, it's fishing was one of my favorite sidequests ever. also, pic related, it's bof2

Then 3 and 4.

Personally i'd say 4 has held up the best. But then I like its setting, aesthetics (pseudo-imperial chinese stuff) and slight mysticism and didn't really fall for BOF3's "growing up" story even if the characters were pretty good.

Personally, I like BoF2 Nina the best, but I prefer BoF1 Ryu. What's your preference?

When I first played the game back when I was young, I didn't know there was a default name that you selected by not entering a name, so I named Ryu "Jack" to fill the blank. Since then, "Jack" has been the main character of every BoF game I've played. To name him something else, even Ryu, feels wrong somehow.

Of course.

BOF2's fusion was great. A simple way to get stat boosts and customize your party with an appearance switch included.
I just wish it didn't go away when they reached critical HP. The final dungeon even forces a defuse. And so does the final boss.
They should have added a way to create a "portable fusion machine" or something for the late game.

It takes away all of the fun stuff in the previous games and replaces it with a dumbed down srpg system. It forces you to replay boring sections to get characterization and story elements that you should have gotten in the first go. Battles still end up being easy and repetitive but now they take longer. All of the characters are negative subversions of their previous appearances. Teepo was pretty fucking cool. The one guy who could fight and cast offensive magic. Straight battle mage.

I kept thinking, "Teepo, that style is way too much to handle for such a little kid. But when you grow up you'll be all kinds of badass."

Playing through the second half, I kept waiting to find Teepo, since you reunite with everyone else. I wanted him to join the party so bad.

In the end, it was because of Teepo that I fought Myria. Because even if you didn't fully agree with her logic or methods, I could understand it. If what she said was really true, then she really was the last thing standing in the face of oblivion. I could see where she was coming from.

But as I spoke to my party members that last time, as I considered agreeing on my first playthrough just to see the ending, it was Rei who said to me, "I can't forgive her. I can't agree with what she said, even if it's true. Because if I do, then Teepo died for nothing."

And I knew what I had to do.

So I've played every game in this series other than III. Loved I and II, profoundly disappointed with IV and V. If you want to know how the trilogy ends, of course you should play BOF3 (the game is connected with 1 and 2, lots of references and recurring characters).
But, uh...how should I explain this. BOF3 is the same style as 4, yes, but the world and characters "feel" just like the two first games. Does this make any sense?

>> No.756442

The series isn't near as interconnected as something like Metal Gear, so I'm not worried about continuity or whatever.
I will say that it does need a good plot to keep me going. One of my biggest problems with IV is that I never felt like I was accomplishing anything. It was like BoFII, if clearing Bow's name was the entire game and going from town to town took three times as long. Only thing that kept me going was the parts with Fou-Lu.
If III doesn't do that, I'll be fine, even if the music is just as bland and forgettable as IV.

4's pretty coo. it improved a lot of what 3 did (like combining examine with defend so while defending you can learn monster moves.

The better you play, the better the plot gets when you restart.

I suggest doing a run with a gameshark to obliterate it your first time through, and get your D-ratio up to like 1/16 at least (1/4 if you can for bragging rights) and you'll unlock most of the extras that flesh out the plot.

But you sound pretty unsavable, anyways. So do whatever, I guess.

III has the horrible "I'm not telling you shit" syndrome, but not so much with its story as with its environments. It's incredibly easy to miss somewhat important stuff and good equipment. [continued]

Isn't that the scene at the end of BoF2 where the last Boss hurts you, transforms all your buddies in crystals and shatters (kills) them and you get really angry and rush to him to fight him alone?

No, I believe he's talking about that scene where one of the horse bros is taking a piss. And you run into them solo with Ryu, they defeat you, and stick a sword on Ryu's back. And then he transforms into a dragon, and gets kidnapped.

Also, I really like that scene in BOF2, especially the pic related part.

Yeah. That scene is burned in my memory because of how awkwardly the sword moves.

I remember fapping to this picture when I was younger in the BoF instruction manual.
