Ken's engine is a hack with more hacks bolted on. It's documented pretty well there.

Both. Required reading for Ken and Build:
https://tcrf.net/Proto:Blood/Alpha_Demo#GEORGE.TXT
>...Everything with this system was going fine until we discovered that Ken has some engine flaws in dealing with sprites that use origin based centering. The clipmove() function doesn't work, and neither does hitscan(). These two functions are pretty much essential to doing anything with the engine. I could rewrite them, of course, but that would be a few days to weeks out of our schedule, depending on how many more bugs and design problems crawl out of the woodwork.

>We had waited a few months before switching to the new origin based centering, so I was quite surprised to find such fundamental problems with it. We called up Ken and told him about it, and he said he didn't think anyone was using it, but he really didn't know. We asked him to fix it.

>Tonight I called up Ken because of the group file problems, and because we still don't have a fix for the clipmove() or hitscan() problems. Ken he wasn't going to fix it and we should go back to using the old centering mode. This is totally and completely unacceptable. We've already invested time and effort (need I say money?) into using something, and we're not about to waste more regressing.

>Ken understands algorithms, and he understands graphics. What he doesn't get is how to design SYSTEMS. Everything he does to the engine is a piecemeal enhancement to something that should have been designed right from the beginning. The memory system is a poignant example of this. It is a hack, like most of his code, and not very robust. From what I've disassembled of the group file code (trying to figure out a way to eliminate or replace it), it too demonstrates plentiful opportunities for crashing the system -- pointers being freed without validation, files being closed without verifying the handle, etc.

Damn, one thing I would never expect to see in Doom is non-euclidean geometry. Been playing a map from 2048 units of /vr/ called "Lobachevsky Overdrive", and there is kinda-circular hallway which clearly ignores the laws of metric spaces. Normally, you would walk in circles around the same room, but this hallway takes you to another place. This must be some clever trick like portals or something but it's really smooth.

Just tech demos.
I guess you have to code much of it from scratch. Save/load system doesn't exist by default, no transparency, though that's mentioned in the release, no model support (but who gives a shit, sprites/voxels would be the way to go for this engine).
Not sure if it comes with anything for the AI out of the box. It's mostly a neat rendering engine and dev kit.

This is old news, but what is it about Build games that made them so much better suited for emulating real-world-ish environments, moreso than idtech1? What components are at play? Genuinely curious if it's just a precedent set by the games they came from or if there is more going on.

I think a lot of it's precedent, Tom Hall era Doom aimed to have more realistic environments, Romero was kind of in the middle, and then Sandy went almost full abstract. You don't see stuff like destructible setpieces until HACX. A few mods have good real locations, it's just not a priority most of the time.
Vertical aiming also changes things up, of course.
I think the lighting is also a factor though. I'm kind of hung up on the Build lighting in GZDoom because it illustrates that Doom just isn't lit the same way. I don't have enough experience with Build to say more than that though.

Aliens Eradication TC 2021 is now available
https://www.moddb.com/mods/aliens-eradication-tc/downloads

New Changes

Added ALT fire “Burst shot” to SHOTGUN that fires 3 shells in quick succession.
Added an adrenaline speed boost that last for 30 seconds and then recharges after a short time. This was added to compensate for the slower player speed in the mod. Some doom platforming
in various wads was impossible with this slower movement speed. This feature will help with wads that disable jumping allowing the player to use speed and possibly strafe running to
traverse these sections. It can also help with nukage areas and to help in particularly hard fights.
Rebalanced boss level (ERADICATION MAPSET) for all classes. The challenge was too much and felt cheap.
More balancing for iwad/pwad item placements and amounts.
Human enemies have a burning death animation when killed with fire.
Player can run while reloading from iron sights. Previously, player speed would remain reduced until reload finished.
Weapons revert to normal sights after reloading from iron sights. Pressing the iron sights key during reload animation will return to iron sights after reloading.

Among the things they used for graphics, books of photographs were one of those things, used to make things like sky textures and flats.

I figure some photographer took some pics of some industrial stuff around his area, and he sold/licensed the photo and the rights to whoever was publishing that resource book. Adrian pages through said book at some point, and scans the stuff he finds useful for use with Doom.
Who knows exactly where those valves come from originally, you'd have to track down the photographer somehow to find out for sure, and depending on how much Adrian altered the picture to create the texture, it may not be easily recognizable, the valves themselves could have been cropped from the original photo and put on a base texture Adrian made or sourced from elsewhere.

I'm setting up Duke Nukem 3D for the first time (using a pirated Megaton edition with eDuke32) and everythink works nicely straight away, but the music and effects sound awfully compressed and crap. Romero is actually the person that leaked it through a friend he knew that still had a copy he made them. Sonic Mayhem sort of agreed after the fact, after it was already out there. He couldn't really very well stop it from spreading at that point anyway, but I am glad he is at peace with it.

Music: sc55.duke4.net/games.php
Only works in EDuke/RedNukem AFAIK, not GDX. Create a new folder in your EDuke directory, rename the folder "autoload," MOVE the ZIP files inside of that folder, no need to unzip, and when you open EDuke, select "enable autoload"
The MIDIs sound great in Sound Blaster though and I unironically play in DOSBox when I play the base campaign most of the time.

Sounds: It took a while to find this, as I forgot where exactly I got it from: http://hrp.duke4.net/download.php

Also while on the topic of graphics stuff for HFFM, do you think it would be possible to change the difficulty names for shits and giggles and extra faggotism? Like turning UV to Ultra Erotic, or nightmare to Wet Dream.
Or would that be too much? I'd be willing to try and whip up those graphic replacements, in fact the only reason I didn't do so yet is because I just came home from work and just wanted to run the idea by first

I'm thinking in a few more iterations I'll probably call it in and work out the credits.txts, however I wanna make sure I get in enough for everyone to feel satisfied with the texture pack before then. At the point of modification we're at I think it'd be fair to come up with a more distinct name than NMN3, probably something like vrDoomPotpourri or whatever since it's pretty much a texture salad.
I'm also gonna be using this tripcode (if it works) to better identify myself in the future.

The maps in the last half of the game are the weakest. I actually don't agree with that part of the HACX Chad meme, I don't think the monster sprites are bad. On the contrary, I think there is some very good sprite work in HACX.

The Thug enemy, which are supposed to be mutated street thugs, do look kind of shit though, just seems like a visually lazy design and I think them being the most common enemy in the early game turns people off to all the sprites when they are probably the worst one of all the monsters.

An anon did a very good lengthy analysis of the sprites in HACX not long ago:

That's above my paygrade. Looking at some wiki and forum posts, it should be easy to replace the font character but I'd have to do it manually for the strings like Read This! or Boss Of THIS Gym! since they're just images.
I'll look into it some more but no promises. Meanwhile, here's the gachi names in a seperate wad (with no map so you can sideload it with anything, pic related is it in Chex Quest)

Definition of a mixed bag. Look at that fucking sprite in the bottom row. Next to the torch, second from right. Is that a mummy? It looks laughably amateurish. Then again some of the other sprites on this sheet look pretty fantastic. The Mutant death sprites with the skin being blown back and the muscles and bones being visible is exquisite.

No hard rule against it, but if it's either necessary or doesn't disrupt the flow of the game, I would take a long look at the map and see if it doesn't follow traditional Doom pacing. It would have been good in Industrial Zone, and that reflects badly on Industrial Zone.
It also requires vertical aiming and high resolution to function at full capacity, which is aggravating from a purist perspective.

He was actually supposed to be collaborating with a Doom modder. They approached him with all these ideas and plans for a HACX 2.0. That modder was Xaser and as far as I know he is still active in the community and on Doomworld.

Either one of them could be emailed and asked what happened with HACX 2.0 but the site hasn't had a new update for it since 2012.

Man I wish there were molds of the original clay models Adrian made. I'd love to have an authentic Doomguy or Hell Noble figurine.

Also, this Ranger statue: Worth 300 bucks?

I think Punchatz could likely produce a good imitation. If you've seen the original Baron clay model, it has an almost flat and simple face, because it was made conscious of the fact that it would be scaled down as a low resolution sprite (well, high resolution for its day, but you know what I mean), and that really fine detail would likely be lost.
Looking at the Arch-Vile, he has a lot of detail to his face to make him look like a creepy angry alien kinda thing, but this is just not present in the final sprite, which looks a lot more like some kind of skeletal face without eyes (which I actually prefer).

It'd be neat to see his interpretation.

He made more tracks for each game (and probably with less time, too) so a lot of them are bound to sound similar. I think his quake OST is pretty varied though

Yeah, I don't remember which samples exactly, but I also noticed while playing blood the loudness of sounds was not normalized. Afair, it was more of a BuildGDX problem and it was better in NBlood. Also, I never checked this twice, but I had an impression NBlood has better 3d stereoimaging of sounds.

Industrial Zone having an arrow doesn't contradict anon's statement. All arrows indicate a failure to guide the player through the environment.
I almost wonder though... Industrial Zone was inspired by Downtown, which also has an arrow. Could this have been a reference/joke?

Descent sounds right to me. Drillers and Large Hulks deliver dick flattenings that put idtech and Build's toughest to shame. Plus, it's one of the only games of the time that wasn't made substantially easier by the upgrade from ball to optical mice.
