Finish up the ranger grenade gun, which since that webm I removed the dropoff/floor bounce from the low heat rockets for the sake of consistency, overhaul the plasma gun, got something planned for that. Add brightmaps for a few weapons, playtest until my eyes fall out, and update the monster pack, which is gonna mainly be tweaking aggression, making some attacks less annoying, and some sound tweaks.

I'm too drunk to finish this fucker but I rolled DMHMORT.WAD from '96 (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/d-f/dmhmort).). The layout is like a few deathmatch arenas stitched together with a keyhunt aspect and a light teleporter puzzle. Some pretty challenging areas that play like a predecessor to Hell Revealed. Pretty fun for its time and seems kind of underrated, progression is a little confusing though and the areas all look the same.

Back in 2010, I was a grad student at Brown (CS). A good old friend from high school (let's call him Joe) was also a student at Brown, being advised by Prof. Harvey Silverman at the EE department.

Since the Engineering and CS buildings were next to each other, I'd stop at Silverman's lab from time to time to invite Joe for lunch. In one occasion, I took notice of this weird, pale guy in his mid-30s sitting in the back of the lab, furiously typing on his terminal. Since that was none of my business, I grabbed Joe and headed to the nearest Subway for some baloney.

As we ate our sandwiches, my friend briefly mentioned that the chap back in the lab was Prof. Silverman's son and he was there to help with some simulation for a research project. Joe also mentioned that Harvey's son was regarded as a wiz programmer in the lab, albeit a little aspergy. Finally, he briefly remarked that this guy had developed "a somewhat famous game engine for weird, violent games" back in the 90s. It took me a while to realize that he was talking about THE Ken Silverman.

By the time we were back in the lab, Ken was gone and I had missed my chance to talk to him. I sent him an e-mail later that day, but never got a reply.

According to Master's of Doom Silverman was influenced by Carmack a lot. They managed to get the two in contact with each other during the development of Duke 3D. It was because of this that Silverman made the Build engine sector based. Carmack would later view the Build engine as a "fucking mess" because much of its technology was essentially hacks stapled onto it.

Additionally the Build engine (and it's predecessor the Walken engine, basically a more advanced Wolf3D engine) was the only thing Silverman really did. After that he tried making voxel based engines but didn't really do anything as big as the Build engine after that. By comparison Carmack after Doom made the Quake engine which was a huge technical feat at the time.

A better question is Carmack vs Sweeny since Sweeny was a savant as well but he was a better business type. (He focused a lot on building the Unreal engine so it was capable of being used by outside developers. To the point where they even wanted to just release the Unreal SDK by itself to consumers).

HACX. Playing it after learning more about mapping really helps understand some of the subtleties of the maps. They have a good visual language (following a lot of mapping recommendations elsewhere, either intentionally or just because it's good design) and really good lighting, even in Chocolate Doom (picrel is GZDoom though), with some fights having enemies entirely in silhouette.
It's always feelsbadman that games like HACX and Strife were the right game at the wrong time. If they were originally released shortly after Doom (1993 or 2016, kek) they would have been a hit.

Damn, that was a pretty brutal map. I loved it. I did chicken out at the end and hit the exit switch before killing all of the enemies. If you want to watch essentially a half hour's worth of outtakes, here's a demo-(https://anonymousfiles.io/URnvrsQm/).). Used PrBoom+ with NMNv5 -complevel 9.
The opening fight is very simple and very effective, it's a great hot start and feels really memorable. The gameplay/resource management is as tight as it can be before cracking a spring. At first I was annoyed by the lack of health lying around, but as I progressed I started to dial it in with strategies and learned to make do. I had a lot of fun getting my ass kicked by this map.
Wasn't sure what was up with the hanging corpse texture secret. It opens up to a switch but I couldn't tell what that switch does. And I'm not sure what's causing the secret by the mancubus to open, it's just always open.
I was confused by the end of the level. Part of the reason I just bailed at the end was that I didn't see (in my last few short seconds in the exit room) any immediate way of crushing/telefragging the cyberdemons. Plus there was the archvile and several other enemies still alive according to the automap info. But I wasn't inclined to stick around seeing as I had barely any ammo or health, there's cyberdemon rockets flying at me, a bunch of pinkies are about to get rezzed, and I've just run smack into the exit switch anyways, tempting me like a bottle of Listerine in the bathroom of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Offering the player an easy way out in this map doesn't seem right.
Lastly, it's all personal taste, but I think the visuals look a bit 90s and would benefit from more texturing and architectural work.

Just finished the ROTT Doom TC Return of the Triad. I tried getting into ROTT when it started getting shitposted here a lot a few months ago but the lack of a good sourceport makes it hard to get into, plus the level design limitations. But the level design in this is pretty good. It was made by the same people that made Amid Evil. Recommended.

Other random anon here, while Ion Fury isn't my favourite Build Engine shooter (the 'big three' are pretty tough competition) I definitely think that's it's the most polished one out of all of them gunplay-wise. The Loverboy's alt fire handily solves the problems of fighting enemies that would normally be too small to fight effectively in most other "retro" and throwback shooters and I absolutely LOVE that. The weapon stuff wouldn't be terribly hard to do, all you're doing on pickup is checking the ammo and then voiding the ammo while dropping a version of the launcher that gives that much ammo on pickup.

I mostly agree, though the arc is somewhat unclear in the first new game, he seems to just have arbitrarily switched sides at some point and decides to betray those twin assassins kind of out of nowhere. At least that's what my memory tells me.

He's fucking awful in 2 though, and the replacement support character is annoying as fuck. Really hoping 3 will be better, and bring back more from the classic game, like level interactivity and more varied level design.
