Sorry for the cop out answer but you have to play what you personally find fun and not give up. Games you don't like much will always seem harder. If you're trying very hard but still suck, put it down and try again tomorrow or the next day.

Because it's much harder. It's Super Mario Bros. 1 with The Lost Levels sprinkled in when you least expect it, plus other things are different to trip you up. It also has less 1-ups and less warp options.

The point is that getting good at Vs. Super Mario Bros. will prepare you to beat anything. Yes, even Ninja Gaiden I-III.

Just about any reasonably fast game. Super Mario Bros., Super Streetfighter 2 Turbo, Doom, even Tetris.
The base Doom isn't really hard (outside of Nightmare, which is more of a joke difficulty, though you can play it if you're gud), but the expansions get pretty wicked.
