I still can't believe it. Microsoft had a massive heart start against Sony and all the PS3 did was flop around like a fish out of water. It was a massive joke console for years, and every multiplat except for Final Fantasy XIII ran better on the 360. How could one NSA endorsed spy camera do so much damage to a brand that in five years, Microsoft had to seriously consider cutting their loses and retire the Xbox brand only a year into the Xbox One?

I'm glad Mattrick's legacy is so shit, the only company that would take him on was Zynga, and he was replaced less than two years later, never to find work again.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360
It's fucking incredible. A modded 360 will let you play every 360 and 99% of the OG Xbox library. You can also install hacked backwards compatibility files to force any OG Xbox game to boot, but they might not all be playable per-se. For instance, Capcom Fighting Jam being forced to run on a modded 360 has garbage data instead of sprites, but StarCraft Ghost works exactly as intended and runs better than an original Xbox since it has more RAM and the leaked build expects an original Xbox devkit that has double RAM.

Meanwhile, an XSX/XSS lets you play roughly 40 ~ 60 original Xbox games (total, not percent of the library) and 22% of the 360 library. Not worth it at all, especially since the Fission emulator used forces Vsync and adds noticeable input lag.

>> No.7398821

>>7398814
Oh also, there's no enhancements. Microsoft will use fancy tech buzzword talks to tell you that playing your old games on the Xbox One X or Series S/X through BC runs them at 4k, but that's not true. The games still render at whatever internal resolution they render at, and the Xbox just scales the image to 4k. The only real "enhancement" is the detrimental vsync you can't turn off. Just play them on the 360.

>What about the auto hdr?
It's about what you can expect from auto HDR.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfLz97AbBg0

If you've ever played Sonic Unleashed before, this video should show you everything you need to know about the XSX's BC. It's still rendered at sub-720p, auto-HDR makes it look a little bit more presentable but is barely noticeable, the framerate doesn't dip at all, and the loading segment between the two parts of the level is basically non-existent. This video is also kind of cheating though since Sonic Unleashed was a 60 fps game (with noticeable dips). Games that were locked to 30 fps won't unlock to 60, and it's still 567p upscaled to 4k at the end of the day.

Supposedly the 360 was doing so poorly in Japan that Microsoft loosened the requirements and fees to license games on the hardware so that niche Japanese companies would publish games and improve sales.

>> No.7398904

>>7398889
Actually, it was the original Xbox itself that was doing poorly. It also didn't help that they lost their mascot, Blinx, because of licensing issues with Artoon going out of business and being absolved into several different companies over the years. Yes, somehow, Blinx was their mascot in Japan. When the 360 hit, Microsoft went on the aggressive and started making licensing deals with major Japanese devs for exclusives like Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Infinite Discovery, etc. You're right though, fees to license games onto the XBLA were notoriously cheap, so that's why a lot of shumps got releases on there, and a few got meme physical releases. A secondary reason as said before, most Sega and arcade fans went to the 360, especially since the X360 was the FGC console and fighting games aren't dead in Japan.

>> No.7398980

>>7398814
>99% of the OG Xbox library
Try 90% WITH hacked backwards compatibility and still 20% of those will have pretty nasty glitches. There's a pretty big list of popular OGXbox games completely unplayable on 360 hacked.

>>7398821
Because not every game is enhanced you brainlet. There is a category section of OneX/Series X enhanced games and they are rendered in actual 4k, such as Ninja Gaiden Black, Panzer Dragoon Orta or Ninja Gaiden 2. Games like Sonic or Lost Odyssey are not under this category hence have no enhancements.

Auto-HDR has been a massive letdown. It was sold to us on the basis that when you render lit polygons in any engine you will naturally go outside the 1.0f,1.0f,1.0f white point which DirectX will helpfully clip for you. And so by modifying the DirectX stack slightly you could preserve these brighter than whites for HDR output. Basically taking the internal HDR workflow that all games post-HL:Lost Coast do and making it real. In practice however this didn't work. Games assumed 8bit RGB in SDR and they processed the framebuffers with that in mind and there was no convenient place to tap into the HDR workflow as it was all mostly done in either software or arbitrary shaders.
So what microsoft did is just get some interns to sit and play with some sliders that would take the SDR image and change the response curve to blow out the whites and uncrush the blacks. It leads to horrifically oversaturated high contrast images where outside the mid-tones everything just gets stretched to the extremes of the HDR bounds said interns decided was "good". It's no different to taking your TV remote and fucking with the gamma curve until it sears your eyeballs. In fact it's basically a (slightly) hand tuned version of what auto-hdr on your TV does already.

Sony were playing assholes again in that era. They didn't want 2D on disc, they wanted discs to be big AAA releases and 2D would be PSN only. Microsoft Japan saw an opportunity and took it.
It's the reverse of what made Sony a household name. Nintendo were assholes, Sony captured a huge number of developers by not being assholes. Funny that.

>> No.7399119

>>7399003
Nothing what you said is correct and literary taken out of your ass. There were already few videos on how auto-hdr shit works on that xbox and it's practically the opposite of what you're saying, but I definitely love that slider intern part, really makes it believable and dramatic.

I think the xbox one x enhanced games actually do render at higher resolutions but the list of enhanced games is pretty small and most of them are multiplats you can play on PC anyway.

I was going to say that what makes a one x/series x desirable for me is support for USB wheels so I can play old forza games with a wheel but then I realized they aren't actually supported! not worth the admission price for a couple of games anyway

how's xbox emulation coming along?

>> No.7399408

>>7399119
I too watched those videos and thought it was cool tech. I also saw the real results from the real games and it's not as advertised. It's a shitty contrast filter and not HDR at all. I'm not going to take the words of a company over the evidence of a side by side comparison on professional monitors. Here's a hint: SDR colorspace exists WITHIN HDR. Things should not be getting contrast expanded, either the lights falling on the textures should make it brighter, or there should be more visible detail in the shadows. If it looks black crushed and blown out when displayed on an SDR display, that means your "HDR" is fake.

I don't understand the current market for fatboxes at all. I've been wanting to get one because the drive tray broke on mine a couple years ago and I heard BC on 360 is shit, but all the consoles are $150-200. Meanwhile the games (which I don't need because I already everything I want) are almost all around $5-20. Every other console seems the opposite where the actual hardware is cheap but the games are ridiculously inflated.

All the people who made Xbox great in the 2000s (Seamus Blackley, Ed Fries, J Allard, Robbie Bach, Greg Canessa, Peter Moore etc.) talk about how hard they had to fight for their ideas because Microsoft was filled with literal retards who either didn't understand gaming or hated it and wanted to kill the Xbox (my theory is the old WebTV team was responsible for the retarded entertainment machine instead of a gaming console bullshit with Xbox One). Mattrick was a dumbfuck yes-man who knew nothing about games and just did whatever the bosses wanted to do.

There are some here, but honestly the best part about the Xbox is its basically the end all be all for multiplatforms in retrospect IMO because of its power + 480p+ support + ability to load games perfectly off the hard disk.

Xbox > Dreamcast (VGA) > Gamecube > PS2 in terms of how 6th generation consoles have aged in retrospect (I judge by a combination of technical prowess and how good the modding community is also, no one wants to pay some of the prices they are asking for certain 6th gen games). Although ironically the Xbox is one of the most affordable consoles, I don't think it has as much nostalgia bait as the Gamecube (exclusives) or PS2 (sheer popularity) or Dreamcast (small quantity of some games that are looked back upon fondly)
