I had it for the 64 I think the levels looked amazing but the gameplay was so hard for a kid my age. I think people say the ps1 version is better.

The PS1 version of any racing game on N64 was better - Wipeout, Ridge Racer, Destruction Derby. For some reason a jank N64 port was mandatory.

It simply adds more precision to steering. You can hit a perfect curve and really hug corners. I bought it for Ridge Racer because I'm a huge fan, and it works very well. I wouldn't say it's a drastic improvement over any other form of control though. Skill is always what's most important. First time I tried the NeGcon I swore I was never going back to the PlayStation d-pad, but the d-pad is perfectly acceptable, and might actually be better for drifting, especially for precision cars with short drift frames.

but it's also apples and oranges between F-Zero and Wipeout outside of futuristic hover racing. F-Zero's more of a racing game and Wipeout has always felt like trendy 90s Euro Mario Kart. I do kinda hate how it controls too, but I HD/Fury are so pretty I don't mind it so much.

I love Wipeout. Some of the most fast paced adrenaline fueled games you can play. They're fucking difficult and do not hold your hand at all. You HAVE you get gud, or you'll lose.
Grinding out Vostok Island and Spilskinanke in a dark room while having 90s techno blasted into your ears is an experience.
F-Zero is babby game in comparison.

seriously, why does there have to be a delay in turning? it doesn't add any depth to the gameplay, it just makes it more annoying and awkward to get used to and is just an unnecessary hurdle.

You need to begin your turn earlier than you think. Remember that the airbrakes are more of a "drift". They're helpful for carving out those deeper hairpin turns, but it's easy to overuse them and fling yourself into every wall. Your racing line and general track knowledge matter more than most non-sim racing games. If you come out of a turn at a poor angle, it can cascaded into the following turns and that's when you start pinballing between the walls.
