Back in 97 we had another phone game here in hueland and was multiplayer. Instead of hugo we had two degenerate monsters. It was like a jumping/fighting game. There was a shooter too

The game aired on MTV through antenna. At that time MTV hue was even better than MTV amerimutt. The show was hosted by a fat guy from a metal band. His name was Fat Joao. He used lots of curse words during the show that they tried to censor but couldn't because the bip sound always came one second after the word. He once challenged someone on the line and showed his naked fat ass in front of the camera. It shocked me as a kid. The lack of censorship was the best thing about hue mtv

That Brazilian TV game got exported to US and other countries later on
>With the end of the show at the end of 1998, ITE exported the format to other countries. The following year, Throut & Neck premiered in the United States [ 5 ] on the Game Show Network cable channel . [ 6 ]
https://gameshows.fandom.com/wiki/Throut_%26_Neck
>Home viewers play using their telephone keypads to control the movement of each monster; one player controls Throut while the other controls Neck.

We watched for free and amerimutts had available only on cable. But they got a hot girl hosting it. Much better than the butt naked fat guy we had here

On new TVs transmissions we can't even play games like that any more. Because digital TV takes a long time to transmit compared to the old analog TV. If you play a game it would take too long to see the exact time you pressed a number on your phone. On HD would take even longer. It's not only CRT that beats HD in retro gaming. Analog TV transmission is the only way to play interactive game shows without using the internet

also we had entire cartoon shows and toys where your toys could fire at the cartoon and rack up points sort of like Action Max.

In Ireland Hugo was called 'Hiudai' and for whatever reason was a virtual presenter on an Irish language kid's block and later even had his own gameshow. He'd be an on a screen behind the human presenter IIRC and his lip synch was matched with the voice actor's live speech, which was pretty cool for early 2000s kid's TV.

Unfortunately scarce footage of any of it remains;

In France on...France 3 channel with Karen Cheryl.
I didn't know Hugo was all over Europe.

We also had a 4 player space shooter style game like Starfox with blue, red, green and yellow spaceships on France 2 in the Televisator 2 program. And also Super Mario World where there were several players on the phone and the goal was to press the jump button at the same time as the guy on TV.

And on Canal+ a game like crazy taxi where you had to deliver a pizza. but I can't find images.

Back in the old days when these things were in the TV, only filthy rich faggots could afford the computer or console to play these on.

In Hungary (soviet bloc country), no one has ever seen a Nintendo until 1990 so being able to play Super Mario Bros over the phone in a TV show was unimaginable. The most that people had at the time was a Commodore Plus 4 (the Commodore 64 was on the american export ban list for most of the 80s so you had to buy them on the black market, and only rich people could do that - when I got one circa 1992 or so, it still had a pretty active market).

Although I should mention that just owning a phone was already a huge fucking deal in the late 80s / early 90s, so having a phone AND being able to play a console game with it on live TV was cloud fucking coo coo land of awesome.

We had that shit in Brazil, I remember that the prizes were surprisingly good. Successfully completing the game would net the player a Hugo merchandise kit, with cap, T-shirt, backpack, water bottle, among other things. The score would be put on a scoreboard, and the best of the week would get a bicycle. The best of the month would get an high-end PC, Pentium-class, complete with monitor, sound speakers, keyboard and mouse.

>Imagine the input lag

The input lag was a real person.

Basically, the player pressed the buttons on his phone.

Someone else on the other hand, working for the TV show, would press the corresponding button in the game and would know which button he should press by the sound phone buttons make.

Sometimes the player would make a mistake but not the show employee, because he knew the game by heart and did some things in anticipation.
