I'd play all these games before I play Final Fantasy VI or The Secret of Mana.

Why was Squaresoft so overrated, bros?

Same. PSIV is my all time favorite JRPG. SNES had far more RPG quantity, but Genesis despite it's smaller library had some of the best in the genre. If you add Sega CD then Lunar 2 is pretty fantastic as well.

I used save states to finish Phantasy Star 4 and it was the most boring game I have ever beat. Go to point A, go to point B...literally all it was. Some sweet tunes and getting to battle rag rappies was the only good thing I can take away from that experience.

I seriously can't understand why people like PS2 so much, 1 & 4 are amazing, 3 is rough around the edges but at least attempts some interesting things.

2, between the leveling bug, your stats not actually being factored into battle, the insanely piss poor dungeons that were literally laid out by an intern, the rushed production schedule, and the obstructed dungeon view... is just bad.

This really shouldn’t be a hot take, FFVI is an insufferably boring game that, like all FFs, it only attracts its fanbase because how seriously it takes itself. Yes, it’s ambitious, and that’s not what makes a game great. PSIV on the other hand, while being a bit short on side content, is absolutely charming and fun throughout its entirety. The macros are time efficient and the story is breezy and always clear about where it wants to go. This is in contrast to FFVI where you have to fight the same random slime boss multiple times because God forbid Square actually decides to come up with a plot.

>> No.7399761

>>7399490

That’s not saying much at all, though it wasn’t my point. What I mean is that Final Fantasy often sells on the thrill of ambition and scope. This is why it has so many black sheep games, because people are sold more on the grandiosity of the series instead of their gameplay quality, and inevitably the games rarely ever reach the expectations of its crowd. The most tactical that FFVI ever gets is backing off from Ultros to reduce damage, which is an embarrassing thing to praise about it. It’s a braindead game, with an infantile story that people are bent on arguing that it’s the best thing ever made. The thing for me about series like PS or DQ is that they’re not trying to win a technology pissing contest, and as such they end up being far more fun and relaxing to play, in spite of FF not being that different to them in terms of gameplay.

Dragon warrior 2, 3 and 4 on NES were released after phantasy star 2 on Genesis. Even the first final fantasy on NES was released several months after Ps2.

Aside from the first dragon warrior and the dreadful hydlide, there were not a lot of RPGs released in the west at this point. There were also dungeon explorer on TG16 that was out at this point but like 8 people ever played it.

How is Surging Aura?
There's ports of both Uncharted Waters but they're a bit trash.

For non-SNES 16-bit JRPGs, the correct place to look is the PC Engine though. So much more games to be found there, and some of the best ever.

PSI, II, and IV are better than FFI-IV, arguably on equal footing with FFV, but I think FFVI and Chrono Trigger are better. My uncle played both Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy when they were new and he felt the same way.

Phantasy Star's US localization predates Final Fantasy's by over a year and a half, and Hell Phantasy Star II also came out here just a couple months before FFI and they felt years ahead of the curve in-comparison.

Shining Force's localization also predates both Fire Emblem and Battle Ogre and Shining Force is objectively-superior but I digress.
