It's a really awful trailer, but the worst part was that Nintendo knew that and didn't want anyone to see it in the first place. It was never meant to leak out publically.

>> No.7397412

>>7397387
What do you mean? Even official magazines like Nintendo Power, Nintendo Dream and Club Nintendo proudly showed it off. It was shown to the public at Spaceworld 2001. Saying "it was never meant to leak to the public" is disingenious considering how they, themselves, showed it to a live audience.

I remember the Odyssey of Hyrule guy going full retard about this thinking it was an FMV you'd control sometimes in the same vein as Dragon's Lair, not thinking those were real-time graphics.

The artbooks Hyrule Historia and Art and Artifacts IIRC have Aonuma admiting he actively hid from Miyamoto what they were doing for "Zelda for GameCube" because he knew if Miyamoto saw Toon Link, he would shot it down right away.

So even Miyamoto knew this was a horrible idea, huh? Toon Link, that is.

I was always very fond of the dopey, put upon, and flawed Link from the Ishinomori comic that ran in Nintendo Power, to the point that it's the personality I imprint on Link whenever they don't focus too heavily on his steely, heroic determination. He feels like a kid that got thrown into something way over his head and initially only moves forward because he has no choice, yet eventually becoming a driven and capable hero, which is more or less the way he is in Wind Waker.

Really? I only remember a quote of some artist commenting on Miyamoto insisting all the time about including the stitching on the shirt (which they eventually didn't). Iirc they also comment on their general same-ish feeling they were getting from everything they saw by other developers and how they wanted to do something that would stand out.

As perfectly realized the final look is, they probably overdid it with that goal given how triggered the average fanboy got lmao. Still, it was good they dodged the bullet of going with the tech demo look; that looked awkward even back then.

It was the worst time to go for a cartoony look, sixth gen was the generation of the average gamer being teenagers who wanted blood and violence within a "realistic" (for the time) graphic direction. Wind Waker was genuinely used by both the audience and journos at the time as Nintendo "hiding the console is actually weaker than the Dreamcast" when in reality it was the last time Nintendo did s powerful console (second strongest of it's generation). Now, we now know how intricate was Wind Waker for it's tome, graphically speaking, how getting the cartoony look actually took a lot of effort but back then it was genuinely seen as lazy.

As for Aonuma, it was discussed in one of the Zelda threads this here, I think the second to last Zelda 64 bets thread, that Aonuma hid Toon Link from Miyamoto until he was inevitable because he knew Miyamoto would've shot it down. Similar to how Koizumi did Rosalina's book behind his back.
I said it then, I'll say it again, I wish Koizumi was the guy in charge of Zelda.

The WW stuff gets thrown around a lot since Aonuma's quote about "keepin it hidden" is usually twisted, but the Oracle style is the one style that Miyamoto really disliked apparently. A bit too conventional anime-ish probably

Miyamoto is a petty autist and dislikes anything not designed by he himself. It's one of the main reasons Paper Mario games can't alter existing designs for characters anymore (i.e. partners a la 64 and TTYD).
Meanwhile, the Oracle design remains the best and should have returned for Minish Cap. Easily fits the game more than Toon Link. God what a terrible choice.
