Would you buy physical copies of retro games if they were rereleased on a based syylex glass disc in a caddy, which would last millennia, in a special amaray dvd box with a color manual?

>> No.7392265

no

>> No.7392278

yeah of course. in fact, probably was some made up BS, but wasnt there a theoretical new disc format few years ago that could contain way more data then current bluray and was able to last like 1000s of years?

There's been a new one of those every few years ever since the invention of the CD.
Don't think any of them ever ended up being particularly successful as most people who want long term storage would rather use magnetic tape.

You mean the m-disc (millennial disc), better than the average pressed dvd/blu-ray, but much worse than syylex glass disc.

i'd buy physical copies if they were easier (and in some cases cheaper) to get than digital.

that's generally what it comes down to.

wouldn't it be cool if people could just sell shit, anywhere, and it wasn't no big deal
what if we legalized capitalism again?

OP here. Thanks for replies, guys. I think the ideal solution would be a multiplatform disk with a usb "floppy" drive that would run the game without installation in a program similar to scummvm in windows, linux, mac. That way the compatibility with future operation systems could be assured by updating the software. The disk image could be read to ram to minimize loading times.

And I'm thinking one could even make a standalone frontloader console for playing on TV. There is no doubt most retro gamers would want the 3rd and 4th generation games to be on a mask rom in a cartridge. Mask roms are still being made, the biggest being 128 megabyte. That is enough space for n64, but not enough for ps1/saturn. I personally don't see any advantage in cartridges. The glass disc will certainly outlive the solder and copper traces on a pcb. Futhermore we could read the whole rom in a few seconds to ram and play it like a cartridge. I'm interested in you opinions on that matter. Thanks!

>MUH PRESERVATION
The sun will burn out and our galaxy will end.
Even if we manage to make it to other galaxies the universe will eventually stop expanding and cease to exist at least that's what reddit told me.
There is no preservation.
You will die.
Time will end.
There is no legacy.
Get over it.
Bitch.

What's the verdict on Double-Density 3,5 inch diskettes? I have 50 or so inna box. Are they good for long-term storage?

Can I get the quickest possible rundown on this disk format. I never saw this hardware before. It's strictly for PC systems, through USB? How much storage space can it handle?

That's a iomega zip drive. It was popular in the 90s and had floppy disks with 750mb capacity in latest revision. Zip floppies are not suited for longterm archiving. But I like this format for it's size and robustness. The disc is protected in a caddy, that is not too small and not too big, has enough room for a label, not like the vita/3ds cards. If one were to use syylex glass discs, that medium would last thousand of years, since glass doesn't degrade. I just don't see any sense in collecting retro games, when gamecube/saturn discs already show signs of disc rot. Only older cartridges with a mask rom, which is very expensive to produce, could have a lifespan of several hundred years. Well, ok, the rom will survive, but not the pcb. Later cartridges (gba) used not only mask roms but also cheap eeproms, which you'll have to reprogram each 50-100 years. Current Switch cards are based on XtraROM and won't last a century.

>muh nihilistic downer attitude
>muh big bang is fact
The "Big bang" theory is a crock of shit. Time doesn't end completely. You fail to see that Cosmic background radiation, while indeed real, has little to no evidence to being from the so called "Big Bang". The Universe HAS no creator! It is INFINITE!

No, back up any important data you might have saved on them. Even high grade LTO tapes have data retention of only 30 years in optimal storing conditions.

Interesting. Is it possible to purchase the Zip disks with Syylex glass discs, or is this rather an idea that you just had? I'd like to buy them and try it out, if it was possible.

That's just my idea. Syylex is a German company. They produce these glass discs for libraries and such. They are still expensive, but are the only solution for long term archives.

Nah bro there's nothing nihilistic about it.
