Would the N64 have fared better had it been released around 1994 like the other 5th gen systems instead of 2 years later?

>> No.7390974

Probably, but the SNES was only three years old at the time.
Nintendo's fuck up was resting on its laurels since the NES/Famicom was selling well even by then.

>> No.7391114

No because it suffers from a lot of issues
Lack of quality control, fog, shit 3D, 128kb reserved to music so everything is in mono and loops, etc.
It was supposed to be an arcade video game but it sucks because all average games are platformers

>> No.7391119

SNES was better than N64 in 1995 and 1996. It had beautiful rpgs and beat em ups. What does N64 offer? awful arcade ports and inferior ps1 ports

>> No.7391121

Real question is if the Saturn would have been successful if it was released on the planned date instead of the surprise release

The real master of all was Dreamcast in 1998 was doing graphics better than most PS2 games but they decided to launch in United States in fucking September 1999 instead of lauching in January 1999. Dreamcast was a real 3D and 2D machine. There is not a single good saturn game

What? N64 was for Mario 64, GoldenEye, 1080 Snowboarding, Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, Majora's Mask, Banjo Kazooie, Smash Bros, Paper Mario, Pokemon Stadium, Mario Party, Donkey Kong 64, Mario Golf, etc.
It's nice that you also got PlayStation ports like Tony Hawk Pro Skater and arcade games like San Francisco Rush but the main appeal was getting all the Nintendo content.

The N64 project feels like what happens when you go through a series of sunk cost fallacy copes. The only time they stood back and said "this isn't working out, we have to scrap it." is the 64DD flop. Frankly the whole thing comes off as a series of fuck ups funded by a lucky game boy release and a whole lot of marketing.

Losing Square was a huge blow to the diversity of the library. Its first party gems kept it relevant.

>> No.7391390

>>7390945
The problem with the N64 wasn't its release, it was the lack of third party support, which was because of Nintendo's shitty business practices in the NES and SNES era. The lack of a disc drive didn't help but the main reason companies left for Playstation was because Nintendo fucked over their third party companies over and over. Final Fantasy VII probably could've fit on a cartridge, they would have to get rid of the FMVs but it would be doable, but Square didn't do it because Nintendo was a shitty company to work with, and putting games on Playstation was way cheaper.

>> No.7391395

>>7391390
>Final Fantasy VII probably could've fit on a cartridge
space was only part of the problem, the other part was the n64 hardware sucked and couldn't perform as well as the playstation. Once you follow all of Nintendo's retarded software guidelines you're basically at sega saturn level performance. Square told Nintendo this stuff wasn't up to spec early on, Nintendo told them to fuck off so they did and helped their biggest rival make the best selling console of all time.

>> No.7391448

>>7391390
Even if they did fit it, it would have flopped. Cartridge prices had dropped a good amount by 2001 when 64MB games like RE2 and Conker were released and still retailed for $80+ to offset manufacturing cost. A 64MB cartridge in 97 would have retailed for $120-150 and no one was paying that for one game.

only reason n64 did not flooped in US is due your primal instincts towards consumerism. (this is the only explanation for a shit product to be)
Rational human beings across the world dared to consume this product.

NBA Hang Time was pretty much Arcade perfect.
The N64 also had the best version of Mortal Kombat 4, unlike the unplayable PS1 version.
It also had great ports that the PS1 couldn't even run, like Star Wars Podracer and Shadowman.

n64 had a lot of good platformers which makes a lot of sense when you consider that 3D really opened the door to exploring that genre.
You're right that the RPG genre was lacking with it, even if I do have fondness for Quest 64. That's why you also got a Playstation though where the platformers were just okay (sorry Spyrofags) and the RPGs were top tier.

Let's face it, there's three reasons why Sony fanboys hate the N64.
Mario 64
Ocarina of Time
GokdenEye
And when they finally got to play these games, it was through shitty emulation and a PS4 controller.

Getting completely dwarfed in sales and dev support in a blowout never seen before or since by the company in that magnitude?

>>7390945
Op I don't think they had a legit choice after they fucked up the Sony deal. Both companies had a lot of eggs in that basket, and Nintendo wasn't the one who took it home so they literally had to start over with a new console. Meanwhile Sony just had the stuff they were pitching and could prototype and launch it when some software was ready. If they could have done better, the decisions had to have been made before that point: either preserve/do something to save that deal, or presciently already be working on your other console WHILE working on the deal for some 4D chess reason, so that it falling through wasn't a timeline setback.

The PlayStation was trash when it came to games. Cadtlevanis sotn is godly, then the rest is movie games, mediocre n64 game knockoffs, and jrpgs for fat sweaty nerds (and they're basically movie games too). If the controller was better and if nintendo weren't nazis about development of their system then it could have been the winner. My god did playstation games suck ass in comparison.

It couldn't have been released in 1994. I don't mean "well they could release it but it'd be $600" , I mean the technology literally didn't exist.

3D graphics cards were barely out on PC in 1996, having one in a home console was ludicrous levels of kicking butt. And sure, the PS1 3d was also great for 1994 but N64 shits all over it due to being released two years later.

Another lazy argument, you being too lazy to check them out doesn't mean they're bad ports.

It does prove a point that the N64 library gets overlooked quite a bit because it doesn't have the obvious franchises that PlayStation fanboys are obbessed with.
