I woke up this morning and did some minor changes. Mostly just some bug fixes with some of the secrets (the chaingun secret is activated with use instead of gunfire now, the backpack secret cannot be activated by monsters, etc). All of the relevant textures have been shoved into this wad, I added a midi theme from TTD, and a map name taken from the world cloud. I've been working on this map all weekend so I'm pretty much burnt out now, enjoy!

I think I asked this a few threads ago, but why exactly is Redneck Rampage hated so much or what's so bad about it? I played a bit of it on BuildGDX I think (or one of the Build ports that supported it) and it was alright. I wouldn't say it's on the same level as Duke, Blood or SW, but ok nonetheless. That, and I didn't play enough of it to get a full opinion on the game as a whole, just the first few levels.

Reminder that John Romero is a salty faggot who shit on a fan project (REKKR) multiple times in interviews because they got the credit for an idea he claims he came up with first.

Dev Game Club interview

Article and interview on Making of SIGIL from Shacknews:
>“When REKKR came out, I was reading reviews on Doom World, and they were like, ‘Wow, so, here's something new.’ And I was like, ‘Goddammit! I came up with that idea, but they came out with it first!’” he recalled. (An overview of REKKR posted on Doom World in September 2016 indicates the mod’s designers came up with the idea well before the game’s full release in July 2018.)

I like everything about the Xen they did even the ultra out of place hype music, strange considering the other parts of the OST are very fitting to HL.

The alien forest is cool etc, what I dont like is how they didnt try to make the same weird skyboxes like the original. It just bland space now instead of weird alternate universe and alien sea with a single sun reflected.

it drags a bit, but I'd die on the hill that overall it's an improvement, and I didn't even hate og xen too much, some skyboxes are lamer but really in the original a few of them were just microscope screenshots of cells or some shit
like the other anon said the ost is a bit out of place in HL but I love the decision to keep the giant triumphant fanfare to the final elevator but make nihilanth's soundtrack eerie ambient
the one thing I hate is the look of the jihadhounds, I get they need to be high vis but it just sorta looks like an early 2000s fpsbanana retexture of the nicely done vanilla houndeyes

HL music feels more coherent. BM has good music but at times it goes way too hard for like 2 minutes which feels weird to me
This one for example, IIRC plays after you kill your first soldier who kills a scientist and then you use an elevator to get to ground level where soldiers basically bomb you
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8ZCM4FuI5A
It's good and hype but only for those two minutes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBFQJNu4nVs
This is the original music at that part. It's still hype but calmer and transition from this music and out of feels more natural to game's actual sound

Romero himself often talks about having a photographic memory. He recalls the littlest details about his life in interviews. He says he was reading reviews and the forums when REKKR came out and in the article "jokingly" says he was salty they got so much attention for the idea he came up with first because they were able to do it before him. I am sure he also probably played it. Yet when he was on the Dev Game Club show he can't even remember the name and calls it "some viking thing?" You are autistic as fuck if you don't see how talking about it in the dismissive way he does only sends the signal to everyone listening who hasn't played it "Oh its some thing Romero doesn't even care enough about to learn the name and it stole his thunder, must be shit". People value his opinions extremely high in the Doom community and for him to instead of signal boosting a fan creation to be so disrespectful is bullshit.

You could ask him on Twitter. He's pretty active on there.
The problem is that you're asking someone to go back to a game they innovated on 25 years ago and dive into a community that has had that entire length of time to build on your successes and failures.
However, a lot of doom mapping has stagnated as far as experimental design is concerned. Most popular wads play like other wads.
Good enough to be fun, but safe enough to avoid failure... No one is going to make something akin the chasm these days. That is: something that makes players uncomfortable and risks being viewed as a failure.
So it'll at least be entertaining to see if he can come up with some neat ideas in that regard.

Fire dust was a concept from the Doom Bible. The 'anomaly' is caused by the presence of the dust.

Every instance of a teleporter in Episode 1 of Doom involves the red fire dust texture. The star in E1M5, and the anomaly itself in E1M8. The theme continues in Episode 2 however for the rest of the game we get used to the conventional teleporter gate and the fire dust is phased out.

While never explicitly stated, the Doom backstory does reference the anomalies, and the anomalies still feature the fire dust textures, so we can't really rule it out completely. Another interesting holdover from the original design documents.

There was a good write-up about this online somewhere from some autist who analyzed every teleporter in the game. I'll try and find it.

Yeah. Shamblers and their brethren have been described by Romero as having a matted fur of sorts (something Adrian doesn't agree with, mind), but I figure that if it is fur, it would be some kind of very thin and dense kind, like some kind of monstrous walrus or seal, not fluffy and fuzzy like on a dog or cat.
Romero describes them as coming from someplace very dark and damp, where eyes aren't necessary, so I figure it being fur would thus be something like that, to deal with moisture and cold.

Someone emailed Adrian and explicitly asked "Fur or not fur?" and Adrian's reply was "Not fur."

I somewhat agree because I love old FPS, but being worth playing to you or I does not equate to good or worth playing to a n00b. Case in point: ROTT. Do I regret beating it? No. Do I think it's not a mediocre slog? Also no.

There is no accounting for taste, I think ROTT is a blast and so unique as to make up for it's shortcomings. I don't think they are worth skipping, nor the other games, you can get them for free, you don't even have to leave your chair. There is no reason not to give them a try, they have merit and there are things to enjoy in most.

This shit irritates me on multiple levels. #1 being how an office of 10 people can't keep basic shit straight. This is some weird artist autism, if the majority of people see it a certain way, because they were incapable of properly depicting it as intended or for whatever reason couldn't add 3 words to the manual, than that's what it is.

here is a quote from a small DW thread that sums up what 99.9 percent of people see

>Imps on the other hand, there is just no reason to believe they have anything but a leathery hide. The musculature is just too pronounced and the shape of the body is too smooth.

The real question is, why Doom guy have 1 glove? Why he take off glove to brass knuckle? So many questions, so little answers

Bonus: Does the Mancubus have a striped back or is that just shading for its fat rolls?

having beaten it, it really just gets exhausting towards the end
the first two episodes are pretty nice vanilla adjacent maps with some decent challenge, then wham it's slaughtermap time, like a completely different .wad
going into the last level blind took me like an hour and a half on and off of saving and inching forward, at least a third of that time was just finding a foothold where I wasn't getting ganked by 500 revenants 20 archviles and 5 cyberdemons, yeah I'm shit go ahead
last map had around 20 cyberdemons, give or take one or two, and a mastermind just for funsies, on top of the actually countless boners and fatties and hell royals
knowing where to go, which demons you can just ignore, and who to make infight will probably make repeat visits less painful, but still
I will say though I did like their downtown expy and thematically the difficulty spike works since there's no question you're in hell
tl;dr 500 cyberdemons should've played plutonia first instead still 11/10 .wad up until the last couple maps

Some more Redneck Rampage thoughts
I finished the expansion Sucking Grits on Route 66 and was extremely disappointed with it. One thing that makes RR unique imo is its long ass and complex levels. You don't really have levels like Uranium Mines or Smelting Plant in other games, and you don't have that in this expansion either. They're all very simplified compared to main game. I had an average of 11 minute finish time per map in this compared to 40 in main game
It however is very challenging, it gives you less supplies than the main game and whoever designed the maps loved putting vixens and dogs everywhere. This especially becomes obvious in House of Ill Repute map where you get like 2 vixens every fucking room
I can recommend this if you didn't like complex levels or RR and are looking for something challenging

I played the first 2 episodes of Rides Again and about halfway through 3rd
The long maps are back, there are more enemy types, so far it's more challenging than RR and has vehicle driving. It's not like Shadow Warrior's where you use it for like a minute, for the second map you use it nearly for all of it. I'm genuinely having fun with it so far, not going to finish it rn but I might consider it on the same tier as the big 3 when I'm done with it
The worst part about Rides Again is music. For some reason this has only 2 tracks with vocals, Disgraceland and Cybersex. Very disappointing compared to RR

Hold up man don't leave me just yet, I've been banging my head at this for two hours. All the guides on google say to convert textures to .tga, but Trenchbroom won't accept that. It only accepts .lmps for textures. I found a texture dump of Serious Sam classics all in PNG format, but Texmex doesn't support opening PNGs, and neither photoshop nor Gimp export PNGs as .lmps. I'm at a total loss.

You can open the .gro files in the game folder with something like 7zip, but I myself haven't figured out how to open the textures themselves; they're saved as .tex, but I kinda lost interest there.

Not accurate measure, but checking the size may help. If it's only maps, it's going to be smaller, but again it depends on the number of maps inside. If something is very small, like few hundreds kb max, than it's probably a map or a few without any additional resources.

Sharing my experience with Blood on Linux.
I tried two ports so far: BuildGDX and NBlood (under Wine).

BuildGDX:
+ More options, consistent UI
+ With default options, there is no tearing while v-sync is off somehow
+ Rendering seems to be more clean overall
- Player controls, camera and collisions are sloppy, there are options for everything, but it's hard to achieve perfect setup
- When you run and rotate camera, geometry near the sides of screen is distorted diagonally (with default fov of 90)

NBlood:
+ Player controls and collisions are not perfect, but are fine and, more importantly, pleasant to play with
+ Seems like audio has better 3d imaging and more depth to it
- Options are few and UI is inconsistent, sometimes there is an "apply" button, sometimes not, also in save game it erases save name every time
- Couldn't achieve rendering without tearing without turning on v-sync, and I'd rather have tearing than input lag, but with 120 fps tearing is rare and I'm fine

Doom was a minor mess in development but there was ultimately some focus, and the great talent and ambition of the guys involved made sure it was a great game. Tom Hall had certain ideas, but the rest of the team wasn't big on most of them, and they mostly didn't take even before he was fired.
Basically any problem they ran into with development they could fix with not too much difficulty.
The mix of aesthetic styles largely comes from them being very inspired by the movies Aliens and Evil Dead 2, they were practically doing low budget propmaking with an actual budget and a lot of post processing. There's also the kid in the candystore thing, where these artists and level designers had this amazing new tech which they could do things with they never could before, and they just went nuts with it.

Quake was an *absolute* mess during development, which had serious problems during development, the engine (reliable software 3D with binary space partitioning) was actually a massive headache that took John Carmack a lot of time and a lot of effort. John Romero was also less than cooperative at the time, and as the project lagged behind terribly, it was decided "Oh, just fuck it!" and it was hurriedly retooled from a barely developed open world fantasy RPG with no direction, into a straightforward first person shooter, something they knew they were familiar with and good at, and which with the existing assets they could make and not have absolutely nothing at the projected release date.

I think it speaks quite a lot for these people's talents still that Quake came out so good from all the compromising and struggle, and with all the internal strife, when weaker willed and less talented men would have just hit a wall and made worse decisions resulting in total disaster. In fact John Romero would make worse mistakes with Dai-Katana, and that's still not even close to as big of a catastrophe as say, Duke Nukem Forever.

I finally decided to play Rise of the Triad (2013) and man, this game was so close to being something really good. With a few minor tweaks, better optimization and smarter use of gimmicks, this game could have started the Retro Shooters comeback prematurely and would probably have a decent community today.
The game is still fun, much more than I thought a game so ignored would be, but if some things weren't so janky and the guys hadn't made a questionable choice in how to implement the platform parts, the game could be relevant today and not just a curiosity for fans of the genre.

Note: 3D Realms is working on a new source port for the original Rise of the Triad.

>Tom
Was consistently being outcompeted by Romero when it came to using Carmack's engine in interesting and impressive ways, and overall applying his creativity well. Tom's ideas were increasingly less compatible with what the other guys wanted to do with a game, and hence a lot of his ideas were just ignored or axed, with many of his levels being shelved, in turn, this would drive him to apathy, and he would spend less time doing work, and less time at the office.

If you asked Tom, he was honestly just fine with splitting by the time it happened, they grew apart and he wanted to make other kinds of games, he was pretty miserable near the end, basically being the fifth wheel and knowing he probably had no real future with the group.

>Romero
The fame and success of Doom got to his head, hard, and not only that, he got completely hooked on the Deathmatch that he created. Then, when he actually did get work done, quite a lot of it was actually outside of the office, producing for affiliate companies doing productions on iD's engines, like Heretic and Strife. This brought in money, and some of these games would turn out pretty good, but that also meant that a lot of the time he spent working was not spent working on Quake, like he was supposed to, leading to Quake going pretty slowly.

In Romero's defense, however, Carmack was also taking his time getting the engine done, the renderer was not easy and the most time consuming and challenging effort he had ever undertaken at the time, and it's not necessarily the easiest to develop many parts of a game when the engine you're supposed to build it on isn't finished and is barely working yet.

Since Carmack was the brains making the technology, he was not expendable, while Tom and Romero were, so given how fundamental he was to the company, and the informal and ragtag way it was run, he pretty much just ended up having the most say most of the time, and he was still kinda hotheaded at the time, in his own way.

HROT is not that exciting, but it is far from garbage.
My biggest complaint with the game is that ammunition is so scarce and before the last patch the scythe was so bad that playing on the highest difficulty and pistol start was just boring. The scythe is a little better now so it is possible to save ammunition by using it in a wider range of situations, but the "blank slate" option is still a painful experience because saving ammunition is always your biggest concern. Pistol Start works well in some games because it forces the player to adapt to different situations (including using melee occasionally), but rarely does the player need to keep counting his bullets as if he were playing a Survival Horror or some shit...
Another problem that some enemies don't indicate very well when they are going to attack and their projectile is very fast, so you need to be always on the move because if the guy shoots and you try to dodge without momentum, you will be hit. This ends up making all the most open and complex battles an infinite circle strafing exercise.
It's an OK game that I, particularly, don't think will keep an active community for long after it's released. But it is not garbage.

I see no reason to regret that HROT is selling. It's a legitimate game, the guy programmed his own engine and created something following his vision. The gameplay is decent and capable of generating a more authentic challenge than games like Prodeus. But it is far from being a memorable FPS.
As for Hedon, I think I understand your point. In my view that game has no redeeming factor. But I don't know, there are people who like it. I regretted buying it, my feeling was that I paid to play a shitty mod.

Did you at least play Rekkr first before grabbing Hedon?

Might try it, Prodeus was really fucking bad hwoever.

Its funny all these retro inspired shooters are so insipid. There are genuinely better doom mods.

I guess ultrakill is looking nice and gloomwood as well. Elderborne was surprising for a dark messiah throw back..., Dusk was just okay, the ost is the best part. Its not all bad.

Now that's something that could elevate Ion Fury, a coin mechanic like ultrakill or at least work like the cigar in Vanquish.

This is looking really fun.
But this level design is already light years ahead of what the original ROTT is capable of handle, so even with the new source port there is no chance that anything remotely like this will emerge.

IF is probably the only one of them that genuinely impressed me while still being fun and overall good, it's just awkward getting used to initially. The others are still fun but compare poorly to something like Arcane Dimensions.

Sure but I dont like the enemies in IF, seems like everything I did was using the revolver or shotgun. They are dumb and seem to get stuck everywhere.
In duke you seemed to use your arsenal better, pipe bombs, rockets, even the laser trip.

In Ion fury i never even touched the stupid grenades.
But yes it was better than most like prodeus.

>> No.7395484

>>7395446
Yes, but to be honest, I didn't like Rekkr either, because the way of playing is very similar to Doom, but with less interesting enemies.
To be fair, I played on my Nintendo Switch casually, maybe if I play the mod properly with the keyboard and mouse I will change my mind.

Arsenal is fine, you could get away without using as much as you could in Duke and the others and they're fun to use. The initial enemies in Duke are a bit more complicated but the later enemies are more basic and less fun to fight, the opposite is true for IF; I'd rather chaingun a cyborg tank than shrink a battlelord.
The thing that makes IF weird is getting used to how the guns function. You don't have to worry about things like headshot hitboxes or "muzzle climb" in the other build games.

It as overall a fun game and exquisitely pretty but playing the first few levels in SW I see more ambition and drive than like half of IF.

It just feels better than the initial levels of IF.

Cool interesting mechanics like the jank RC and that machine making uzis. The turret.

Ion Fury is pretty and has some disgustingly hidden secrets but its mediocre.
