Fucking hell, page refreshed accidentally. To not repeat myself again I'll just say that most of the settings are confusing, like ride height or camble angle, stabilizer and brake balance or spring rate. I used to play a lot of simulation mode and I remember having trouble with some of the championship/events, always thought that my car settings would've helped improving my chances if I knew what they did. To this day I haven't won all of them, the hardest one for me were those with the limited cars or where pretty much every car was the same type.

I can play 98% of other racing games just fine, but not Daytona 1 specifically. Drifting in auto doesn't seem to work for me, and "the way" to play Daytona is to use manual. Similarly, Ridge Racer might as well be hard mode for people who don't "get" its drifting system.

Gran Turismo should generally be okay as long as you understand basic concepts of driving line, actually using your brakes, and hitting apexes on corners. The real difficulty of GT is the AI, they're fast enough that almost everyone is less than a second of each other.

If you want some racing games that won't you feel like shit, try Lego Racers (unironically) or Star Wars Episode I Racer.

If you look at V-Rally 3, it has even more detailed terrain in terms of modeling on the sides of the road, but anything past the edges of the track is a hard boundary even when it looks level with it, so there isn't sliding room in this rally game, and the trippy texture warping near the screen where your car is feels like you're swimming, which I noticed is MUCH less prominent in Top Gear Rally except on distant walls. The car being a sprite means that they only put in about 8 rear-faced angles of it and consequently looks like out of place garbage when on jumps and slopes. Its wear-and-tear systems debatably make it more simulationist but both games tune the same in terms of tires, steering, gear ratio - they also just tell you the road surface and give you the option to change to tires named after that surface, so I don't see the point except to let you pick wrong for some reason.

I prefer Top Gear Rally of the two but they're both very interesting retrospective games, look at both if you're a rallychad of any sort.

Ridge Racer - Worth visiting to see how it all got started, and still has great music. The hi-spec version is cool, but you're limited to time trial only because it can only draw two cars.

Ridge Racer 2 - Great game, best soundtrack in the series, and incredible two player gameplay, but it's kind of redundant.

Revolution - Best home version of classic RR. Link up mode is the bomb if you have two TVs and two PlayStations. Has the same soundtrack as RR2, and both the Revolution and RR1 courses are available in 2P.

Rave Racer - Best arcade RR. Only three tracks, but they're great tracks. Brilliant techno tunes to race to.

Rage Racer - Solid entry, good music.

Ridge Racer 64 - Western effort and not a great one.

Type 4 - Stunningly overrated but still good all the same. Half racing game, half RPG, there's tons of grinding for cars and pit crew dialogue to sit through. Not really fun until you start unlocking faster cars and races, but when you do, it's great.

RRV - Solid entry.

RRDS - Another Western effort, better than 64 but not much.

Ridge Racer PSP - Beginning of the nitrous era, and an incredible technical achievement for a handheld title. It still looks good now. Tons of tracks and remixes of classic tunes. Redundant in light of 2 though.

Ridge Racer 2 PSP - Improved version of the former.

Ridge Racer 6/7 - practically the same game, with 7 being the superior version.

3D - Excellent and underrated instalment in the series.

Little things like how the FOV is different between them all, the image on PS2 are proportionally correct, on 360 everything is a little wider and on PC even wider than that.

Even as a kid I thought that cars in MW looked wide and back then I just thought it was because they had widebody kits, I could never replicate the same "look" they had in other games. But nah it was literally just because the image wasn't scaled properly

revo is a fucking weird situation and i'd like to read about what went into its development, the mud and grooves in the track were similar to motorstorm which was hyped at the time but the handling feels like shit for a series that's traditionally felt like gracefully gliding through increasingly tough stages, but the thing is the arcade version, sega rally 3, has exactly the same mud and track deformation shit but with good old sega rally sliding, unfortunately the only home version i know of is on ps3 and only the emulated arcade one lets you port the slightly different revo tracks.

basically what happens is odious individuals come to a community, cause a huge ruckus, "leave" in a huff, but then proceed to spend the next decade shilling themselves anonymously and stirring up shit. it happens in every general. it will happen here. attention whores crave the drama and when people are chill with each other because it's necessary to enjoy video games, especially organized racing as a group, they are forced to start some. it's actually really bad on /o/ in general because tripping so that people remember that you own a car or whatever is part of the culture and it's always had little off-board cabals and shadow governments shitting up the place.
those people stirring shit aren't actually part of the community, as they have been ostracized from it and it is impossible to self-administrate so what is there to do but poke at them when they show up and ensure the bullshit they spew is negated by the truth?

i like sega rally's surface modelling. revo was cool but too easy. didn't really get enough of 2 because i played a dc rip that had the music taken out of it and the one arcade machine i've ever seen was broken.

i believe this is the saturn version. i forget what emulator i was using for this, probabably yabause but it is also being played with a wheel.

if you want to do group activities you will eventually have to "meet" people from 4chan be it through a voip app or irc or whatever. i would say from my experience that most of those people are 107% awesome and understand the necessity of the community to remain functionally anonymous. people might have unique screen names so shit talking can be appropriately directed mid-event, but these aren't really important, not used for tripfagging, and everyone's ideas are treated equally as they are on the board.
i think discord causes...what to call it...forum syndrome? where having access to posts histories and statistics cause people to get into idiotic e-penis contests rather than having functional discussion. people are more concerned with what their acquaintances will think of them in the future than stating fact or doing. when they come to a 4chan-style community the internal conflict between desiring validation but everyone around you totally willing to admit they don't give a fuck causes some folks to just lose they damn mind, and they proceed to ramp up the cunt level until people are forced to talk about them, so the drama begins.

Then remember slow in, fast out. Braking early is the key for smooth cornering and not overshooting.
Work on throttle modulation, especially for high powered cars. Being gentle with the throttle is key to not spinning.

The AI is stupid fast on some of the tracks, possible to beat, or you'll blow by them. Sometimes you'll see them just rubberband on silence 3 and fling themselves off or use the jump near the end before boost is available. I mainly stick to grip machines but that's my preference. Honestly just try to survive the race and go for it on the final lap. You're gonna have at least 1 or 2 tracks where you can easily win and/or the ai dies so much you'll catch up in points.

Holy fuck, another Driven to Destruction bro. It is an absolutely top quality game. The way the career "menu" can have you drive from option to option is something I've always loved.

I've said it elsewhere on 4chan (and maybe even in an old edition of this general) but I still believe that had Monster Games not just repackaged the console-exclusive NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona and had TD:EOD/DTD on PC, it would still be being modded today.

>> No.7425709

I had forgotten how much of a grind Gran Turismo 2 was.
Those manufacturer races which require race modifications and weight reduction stages 1/2/3 for your car, and cost over 100k while winning the race gives you 5k. Brutal.

What idiot were you listening to that omit NFS3?
I'd still argue it's better than HS.

>> No.7425863

Reverse nitro is god modo if you git gud and learn to use it - you will never ever run out of nitro. Problem is you need to 1) know the boost points and 2) not fuck up. If you don't then you run out of nitro and can't generate any more.

every GT is like that, except in 4 you can make the B-Spec guy do races again for you instead of having to grind them yourself for credits
