737481 No.737481 [Reply] [Original]

I've just bought Metal Gear Solid (well, downloaded it from the store for PS3); despite hearing about the series since I was 10, this is going to be my first playthrough. I also realise this may not be the most... productive thread, but the only other one argues about releases, and I'd rather prepare myself well for the journey I'm about to experience. I've decided to give MGS series a chance after hearing how great Snake Eater was, and I'd rather play the games in the order they were released, to recognise the characters/events.

So MGS enthusiasts, is there anything I should know beforehand? I must admit I'm scared that the controls might put me off (but not the graphics, I'm not that guy).

>> No.737508

The only thing that you need to remember is that when you need the radio frequency for Meryl, the CD case item is hidden in the snow outside.

>> No.737543

There is lots of talking.

There are lots of strange and funny Easter eggs to find, so experiment with guard behaviour. Lots of items have multiple uses, as well, so don't be afraid to do silly things like punch Meryl and immediately dive into your cardboard box, or whatever.

The Codec team will give you lots of hints about the Easter eggs and provide interesting story info, so don't neglect the Codec, especially when facing bosses and so on. Repeated Codeccing is so comprehensive that you won't even need a walkthrough if you get stuck.

The controls in MGS1 are pretty easy, though dated. L1/L2 and R1/R2 are your items and weapons menus respectively (L1 and R1 are quick equip and unequip, which is very handy to have). Square is shoot (the pistol has laser aiming), circle is punch (as well as climb ladders, etc), X is crawl and Triangle is first person view (although you can't do much in it in MGS1). A useful tip you won't get told is that if you hold down Square and then X, you can run around while aiming your pistol. This is pretty handy when facing some of the bosses, but it'll make your hands hurt like hell. The camera is fixed, and Snake's movement isn't faster if you push the analog sticks harder.

For the early levels, holding down Square behind an enemy with no weapon equipped and not holding down a direction will let Snake grab someone by the neck. Repeatedly hammering it lets him snap their neck. This is really handy when you want to remain silent.

It's mostly easy, so chill out and enjoy it. It's a great game and a great world to lose yourself in.

I actually just played through it for the first time myself. Had the demo disk and played that over and over again and rented it a few times when it came out but never actually bought the game until recently.

Anyway, found that some parts of it aged really really well and some didn't. Either way it's a really enjoyable experience. Just beat it a few weeks ago and currently working my way through the HD collection.

You probably know, but just in case you want to play more Retro related Metal Gear you should go for the MSX2 versions of the original two games (Kojima had nothing to do with the NES ports and considers the first an embarrassment).
The original Metal Gear was translated and published in Europe and the second was fan translated years ago, so either grab an MSX emulator or play them trough the Substance/HD version of Metal Gear Solid 3.

You may want to pick up the legacy collection releasing early july, OP.

This is something I hope they explore more deeply in Phantom Pain. I really want Big Boss' character to slowly shift to somebody everyone considers a hero, to a person who has succumbed to years of moral decay and has reached a breaking point misinterpreting The Boss' last will.

Because by MG2, he was just a mad dog needing to be put down.

I think we'll have to wait 'til 5 to really know the answer.

Both Zero and Big Boss are well intentioned assholes who didn't understand the bosses will. Solid Snake is the real hero because he was like the boss, followed the mission even when it meant killing himself in order to save others, just like the Boss did. Except they changed the ending because Snake dying was oh so sad.

>> No.738631

That's not an excuse what so ever, Solid had a hard life too and he never took it out on the world like Naked did. Even during Solid's lowest points all he did was become a drunkard 3 times. While becoming a drunkard he entered two relationships during the last two times he was an alcoholic, one which was hinted to be a SPECTACULAR failure. Then when accelerated aging caught up to him he became a nihilist for a while.

I dont, I liked it. But, MGS was not designed for FPS, like in teh ocelot fight. In the old one it was a top down fight in 3rd person. In TS you can just aim down the sights and fill ocelot full of .45acp. Or when running up the stairs on teh towers, now you can just stop and pick people off a few flights up before they get to you.
And the matrix style action in teh cutscenes was fucking stupid. Like him kicking chunks of concrete at the hind to take it out. Why?

They also retranslated some of the dialogue and made it sound shit. Most of the music during the cutscenes was changed for the worse too.
