It's not even the combat alone that ruins it. It's the fact that every area is labyrinthine with no map or indication of which way to go and enemies respawn whenever you reenter a screen with no way to run past them.
I feel like these would be relatively easy fixes too, and with them the game would be one of my all time favorites. But I know if Square ever were to remaster the game they'd ruin what made it special in the first place (lack of handholding, art, and music). Feelsbad.
