I stopped posting here before it happened to focus on work and upcoming second child. Now that I came back, the first thing I noticed was the existence of /vrpg/, which I'd guess has had a positive influence on /vr/ since all the obsessive JRPG trolls would go there (which seems to be true). Seems like the best of both worlds since they can have all the Final Fantasy 6 threads they want over there and not have to worry about talking about non-retro entries in the franchise.

Retro in videogames: Anything that could be played in or is based on, or ported from the arcades, it's that simple. Arcades are the heart of what retro games are about, that specific era and sentiment in gaming shaped everything from that era.

The PS2 is not retro because its library doesn't solely consist of arcade ports and games inspired or meant to emulate the look and feel of arcade games, it's therefore not, and never will be part of this specific era that we call retro.
It could be one day be part of another cultural or social phenomenon or movement, but it never was and never will be retro.

Arcade Retro is 70s and 80s, and to a limited extent the 90s. Video Game retro cannot be limited to Arcade Retro because videogames existed both before and after arcades. Arcades were the specific expression of videgames in the era before it was practical to have powerful home consoles. It is a unique era with plenty of heart and soul but doesn't account for videogaming in its entirety.

A better definition points to the era of rapid technical innovation in videogaming. You had big developers at the cutting edge of the industry both working within the hardware constraints and pushing their limits to make new and exciting games. Each new technological innovation yielded whole new paradigms of game design and the very best developers in the industry explored those designs. And yes although Home Computers were relevant early on, Arcades led the way through the 70s and 80s. The 90s saw rapid evolution on PCs and home consoles as well.

During 6th gen, the innovation slowed dramatically. Game design was increasingly not limited by technology or budget in fact the next major paradigm in game design would come from a solo indie developer using Java.
