Just finished Redneck Rampage. Some thoughts
Some weird balance decisions. A dog takes like 5 shotgun shots to kill, yet it can hit you for 20 damage and sometimes even bugs and hits you while you're not in his range. Vixens are one of the hardest build engine enemies, yet IIRC in their introduction mission(Downtown Hickston) there are like ten of them. For the next few missions you don't see them at all and in the ones you see them there are only a few of them. Why?

Some really good levels, probably the most advanced Build Engine levels. They are long too, I thought Dark Woods from Shadow Warrior was long. Most levels in this game took me about 40 minutes. I liked Junkyard, Nuthouse and Grimley's Mortuary the most off the top of my head. Some really obscure key hunting that is harder than finding secrets in other games though

Weapons and how they feel are undeniably worse than other Build games. Like this game's TNT can't even compare to Blood's. Enemies feel worse too and Leonard and Bubba can't compare to other protags either. But really good music

The sequel is much better with level design, the addon (Sucking Grits on Route 66 or something like that) is also nice - many enemies and simpler layout. I don't think RR has bad enough levels you'd skip them completely. The level I disliked the most was the first one because it was way too open and with key hunting it wasn't really fun at all
I hear people dislike its Sewer level but that wasn't too bad for me. I didn't bother killing anyone or looking for secrets, just run looking for switches and it took me about 10 minutes to finish it IIRC, which is way faster than other levels

Vehicles have the opportunity to be great or incredibly wonky. The SW vehicles are obviously sector constructs, thus bound to a single large sector. Unless in some special cases or if you fuck up hard, these make you practically invincible while driving them.
The RR vehicles are sprites/entities and you basically become the vehicle. You may go anywhere, but due to how RR handles things you're a sitting duck to hitscanners in a vehicle and often it's better to not ride one.

For me, I just focus on the gameplay first. I get an idea in my mind like "I want this map to be a UAC lava base" or something like that. Then I design all of the geometry and gameplay first, and I don't even care about textures until the end. My whole level is plastered in one floor texture and one wall texture until the very end. In staying with my idea, I'll put lava textures down where I know there will be lava, and door textures for doors, but that's it. I also try to do only minimal detail sectors until the very end, as well. By minimizing the aesthetic qualities of the map, it helps to minimize the amount of inspiration needed to actually design the map. Then I'll go through and design the encounters, assign linedef specials, etc... (although I do some of this stuff through out the process in general).

At that point, you pretty much have a finished map, and all the hard stuff is out of the way. Then you can go through and do all the texturing and detail sectors. By putting off texturing until the end, you can get the hard stuff done quicker without the time-consuming easy stuff getting in the way.

Another tip: If you get bored, just stop. Wait a bit, then come back to the map. Don't keep restarting. Persevere through it. When you're starting out, actually finishing a map is much more important than making a map that you think is good. Make sure to keep the scope small for the first few maps, as well.

Alright, I'm running into trouble trying to combine NMN1/2 together. I'm

Where it falls apart is;
F_SKY is rendering as a texture from the NMNTEST2.wad (combined texture pack) that has decided to interlope for whatever reason.
In addition, NMN contains a new water flat. However, ANIMATED refuses to allow NWATER8 to cycle through to NWATER1. To get around this I simply removed the entry from the table, however the texture is kinda nice and I'd prefer to not leave it ripped out.

Those rounded rectangles in the middle, those are suppoosed to be beveled/bumps right? Watch your shading, light for doom textures adheres to a top/left style, so.. light is always coming from the top left against whatever surface the texture is on. The gameplay was a blast, however I played on serious and the difficulty is nothing compared to the previous games. Probably because with the skill system you gotta balance the game around a whole lot of variables. Good point, even the id guys all invariably ended up making their houses and shit, it was a common thing to do. However, I just don't know why he wouldn't mention it in his journals or the Basement Tapes. He openly discusses their planning and the attack in the journals as well as frequently talking about Doom, making Doom doodles (pic related is one of his Doom drawings) and sketching layouts of his Doom maps. There is nothing in there about it.

They made video tapes they made showing their preperations in the weeks leading up to the attack, brief snippets of which were released. The Basement Tapes however were videos they made on the night before and the morning of the attacks, explaining why they did it, bragging about what was to come and telling police not to arrest their friends. These tapes have never and probably will never be released, most likely due to comments both made about a few specific students they hated and hoped died in the attack, some of which they actually did kill. We only know about it from a reporter who was allowed to view them and transcribed them. These were the videos where Eric said the line that got quoted a lot after "It's going to be like fucking Doom! Tick, tick, tick, tick... Haa! That fucking shotgun is straight out of Doom!"

Here is why I ultimately believe he didn't make a Columbine Doom map: it was supposed to be a bombing. They set two propane tank bombs in the cafeteria when it would be most full. Cops said it would've completely demolized the cafeteria and killed at least 400+. They planned to shoot people as they fled the school. The plan never really was to run the halls like you're playing Doom gunning people down. When the bombs didn't go off, they said fuck it and decided to just go in shooting. They ultimately just wandered the halls shooting people and throwing pipe bombs, some of which didn't even go off. They went back to the Cafeteria twice to try to make the bombs explode, they shot at them and threw a Molotov on them. Still nothing so they ended up going to the library where the main massacre happened (and which you can actually listen to via a cellphone the library called 911 on it. Its faint but you can hear Dylan and Eric laughing and taunting kids and shooting them and yelling they're all going to die etc) They finally offed themselves there after the police started shooting through the windows.
