At what point does a retro video game collection go from collecting to hoarding?

Does a large collection of games make you look like basedboy?

I fundamentally hate the idea of someone owning a game, but never playing it. The point of having a large collection is that you are such a fucking nerd, you can't breathe without vidya, hence why you have so many. But every collector fag has played like 10% of their collection

>> No.7365740

if you can go through 90% of your collection and say "i play this", it's collecting
if more than 20% of your collection is owned simply because it's rare, or you read it's good from a "TOP 10 MOST OBSCURE (insert console) GAMES EVER!!!!!" then it's hoarding

Anyone who says that collecting is hoarding has never been inside of a real hoard. Real hoards are disorganized and disgusting. If there's any room to walk, it's always extremely narrow pathways. If not, you need to climb over the stuff. The stuff in a hoard impedes movement around the home and by proxy ability to clean said home often making the place filled with bacteria and leaving it terribly smelly. Finally, items in hoards often have little to no actual significance. For example, in the hoard I had to help clean last year there were dead batteries lying everywhere and several hard copies of a manual for some camera printed out. Single sided as well. Lots of recycling and trash was everywhere like empty cans and bottles and plastic containers. There were berry vines growing in the back that couldn't be trimmed due to garbage and furniture blocking the exits back there. The berry vines had overtaken an entire paved back section and had even crept up inside of a sliding glass door. So to answer your question OP, the thing that turns collecting into hoarding is jealousy from onlookers.

>if he plays so many videogames, then why dont he know how to hold an N64 controller?
First of all, it's a well-known fact that MJR doesn't play or even like playing videogames.

Secondly, ironically enough he actually is holding the objectively correct and superior way for anyone with decent sized hands like me. It's the best way to hold the N64 controller, I have held it that way since I was 11 and will continue to until I'm dead because it's the only right way.

>At what point does a retro video game collection go from collecting to hoarding?
When they stop knowing what they're talking about and start being a poser who wants to buy an identity. Volume of shit is less impressive than connected meaning behind the items. I knew a guy with a fossil collection that was like five seashells but they were badass because he could talk for uninterrupted hours about it.

But if the question is "should someone be roasted for collecting," who cares if they're intelligent or funny. Imo it's just feminine to look at a guy and start sizing up his room and how fuckable he is because of that.

Hoarding is:

1. Showing off
2. Buying to buy, not buying to play
3. Buying bad games despite knowing you're not going to play them
4. A form of self-consciousness over your own collection, then mitigating that by focusing on quanity over quality

The idea that someone has to play a game they collect is a completely arbitrary rule aimed at minimising the sour grapes of those who don't collect/have pathetic collections.

Do you expect a heavy collector to play through every game including compilation packs that feature the same games he owns? Should someone open a sealed copy of an expensive game to satisfy your stupid arbitrary rule?

It's all hoarding but it becomes a problem when you can't properly take care of what you're buying.

don't be like reggie please lol
Radical Reggie is just a perfect recipe for depression. He has a really unhealthy lifestyle and completely addicted to buying games over basic needs. If you're 40+ years old playing with toy lightsabers on camera, falling asleep while eating popcicles and begging for gas money to drive to a place where you're only going to spend more money and feed your unhealthy obsession, man take a look in the mirror (if you have one) and really get some help. I don't like the MJR crew or the Spawn Wave crew and they're nothing but a conglomerate of scammers and talentless hacks but I can't help but kind of feel for this guy. He's so desperate to be loved and praised by these weirdos that he's willing to put himself into debt over it. He's just so pathetic, the guy needs help.

Honestly I wouldn't be able to stand having an attachment to this much stuff that I feel like I could never replace.
Imagine going on vacation and checking the weather, and seeing that there's a huge rain storm happening back home. Is your basement leaking? Did you remember to close that upstairs window? Are the concrete ties to your house's foundation rusting away from an undetected slab leak? Did that rare game you bought on ebay get delivered, and is getting soaked outside? Just think! If the humidity inside your house reaches 40% or higher, pins corrode, labels peel, battery terminals rust and that old game you spent years hunting down might not ever work again...though, how could you even know? You're unlikely to play even a fraction of these games ever again. In fact, you're not even sure you really like playing games at all any more - but that doesn't matter. Father Time's unyielding threats of disk rot and pin corrosion eat away at your mind. Every second of every day you can't help but shake the thought that the clock is ticking on your precious collection, your temple, your sanctuary, your personality itself!

Not for me.
I'd rather have a good meal with friends or go on a trip with my lady than have all that plastic crap to worry about "protecting" and "preserving".
And what's the payoff? After years of saving, hunting, buying, collecting, displaying, cleaning, preserving. What would be my reward? I get to play an old, forgotten game, by myself, in the dark. Totally and utterly alone with my walls of carefully curated plastic.

>It's an odd thing to collect. I know people who buy Lego and store them away never building them. Makes me scratch my head.

People collect because of the scarcity. Many retro game collectors grew up in a period where a game would disappear from existence once it was no longer new. For me, I mostly started collecting for systems I always wanted to play as a child but missed out on.

I guess this is less appreciated now as people's first exposure to old gaming will be through emulation and it's nigh impossible to not be able to find a game thanks to digital platforms.
