Can we just have an honest discussion on half life without blatant fanboyism to clear the air and assess it’s impact and quality and what its strengths and weaknesses are.

The problem is one side says it’s a flawless masterpiece while the other says it’s dogshit when in reality, it’s a strong fps with fun platforming and interesting world building that could use more exploration and a stronger ost, that’s my take anyway.

Pros:
-First FPS to have environments that look like a real place instead of an FPS level.
-Enemies that do more than just run in a straight line while shooting.

Cons:
-Xen and On A Rail

>Strengths
Lots of enemy variety
Lots of gun variety
Interesting lore
Setting is great when you're wandering through the abandoned research labs and you get to see what all the branches were working on
Game does a good job of mixing the threat up so you're going against aliens, then the military and then stopping the aliens at last
Feels great to play
>Cons
Military enemies can get a bit samey
Lots of people thought Xen was kinda bad
Setting sucks when it's boring desert locations and office sections.
Black Mesa makes no fucking sense as an actual location

That's off the top of my head really.

a really fun shooter that was really innovative for the time. less impressive now-a-days because every game is doing what it did. on a rail isnt as bad as people say it as and Residue Processing's biggest sin is being a bit boring, Xen is ass though. Half-Life 2 is much better although that might not be a popular opinion on this board.

I guess it deserves some credit for contributing to "modern" fps design. But really, Halo did far more in that respect and became the template for the 7th gen FPS game in a way that Half-Life never did. All in all, I think it's quite overrated, both in terms of its influence and its overall quality.

But that's what makes the Combine bases stand out. Entaglement, the Citadel and a few other minor areas stand out. Maybe not crazy scifi but definitely the scifi you would expect from a combine civilisation that has no time for art.
Making the whole game some corridor scifi pew pew shooter would definitely not be an improvement.

>> No.7362915

Both HL games kind of fizzle out at the end. HL1 is well known, the Xen levels. HL2 is debatable, for me it's in the end of Entanglement and beginning of Anticitizen One. After spending the whole damn game escaping from City 17 and travelling cross country as far from it as possible, then suddenly teleport back into it, and you're stuck in it for the rest of the game.
So disappointing, the high point of the game was going around seeing all the abandoned places and escaping from Combine traps, ending it all invading a secret Combine stronghold with an army of giant insects. No other game ever made an experience like this, and they follow it up with boring resistance urban warfare stuff. That's why Episode 2 was so good, it's entirely based on "running away from the city".

>the mod scene is/was insane and elevated the game greatly

>Weaknesses
>I didn't have a problem with it at the time, but on replaying it I noticed that Xen starts to drag about midway through the Xen-levels, they feel rushed and barren
>standard multiplayer was a bit lacklustre at the time (but saved by the mods as mentioned in strengths), I remember my lan-group much preferred the original Unreal and even Q2 over HL-multiplayer (but soon enough HL mods, especially CS, started to dominate our lan-gaming completely)

>> No.7364429

>>7357897
HL2 was a mediocre FPS-game that just milked the HL-sequel-hype as hard as it could. I'll never understand why people went ape over it, there were plenty of better FPS games both before, during and after its release.

>> No.7364467

Strengths:
>strong atmosphere for the time, feels very survival horror-esque for the first hour or two until the We've Got Hostiles chapter
>gunplay is as tight and punchy as Quake, Unreal, and other contemporaries, weapons are great too
>exceptional multiplayer community and mod support that led to things like Counter-Strike
>remarkable OST and sound design, with music kicking-in at very specific moments that perfectly fits the mood or the action

Weaknesses:
>overabundance of friendly scientist and security guard NPC's undermine the atmosphere somewhat, the game would feel much more consistently-oppressive and creepy if everything there was literally out to kill you
>lots of quiet time and scripted sequences that are kind of dull after the first time
>HECU are cheap hitscanning cunts on higher difficulties
>Xen levels are tedious and overstay their welcome, despite their great visual design and atmosphere

>> No.7364480

I came into xen expecting to absolutely hate it but I found it fine? I thought the space jumping was actually kind of fun unlike the rest of the platforming in the game , the only especially bad segment was the one crappy air cannon puzzle.

From what I remember any segment with marines was ass, hitscan but as spongy as the non hitscan aliens.

I just played through Black Mesa and it reminded me of how many things this game did right, especially in the way it handled the basic FPS weapon loadout. The story is about a scientist, and instead of an assault rifle or grenade launcher, you're using railguns and a fucking ghostbusters proton pack. And the twist when the marines show up was brilliantly executed.
It was a landmark game, and the gameplay itself wasn't half bad. Despite being a strictly linear experience it built a believable world and setting. One of the finest games ever made, shooter or othewise.
