When will John Romero release the source code to Daikatana?
>“Some time in about 2006 or so I was mapping for a mod, Missing Information/177, for Half-Life 2. For fun, I decompiled [a Daikatana multiplayer map] and fixed the brush work and made a working deathmatch level,“ he says. “I sent the work to Romero and he was impressed enough to give me the map sources and later on I asked him about having the entire source code. He asked me to ship out an empty hard drive to him. He copied the contents of the entire tape backup he had before he left Ion Storm and overnighted the HDD back to me.”

Besides the problems with the companion AI, which is fixed in the community patch, it's a solid game. In fact, the second episode in particular and on is fantastic. The first episode and especially the opening stages are the worst in the game and that is unfortunate as it makes a very bad impression on new players.

Yeah. Daikatana is over-memed. It's actually good with the community patch.

Romero was the lead designer on Doom after Hall was pushed out. If you're talking net negative influences, that would be John Carmack, who was a dick to everyone, and also had the studio cat put down like a sociopath without asking any of the other devs.

How could Carmack have been a net negative when he was the coding mastermind that made Doom and Quake come to life?
You make a good point though, he is a sociopath.

Carmack is a complete piece of shit. He managed to drive off every founding member of iD with his fucking autism and inability to handle the fact that they needed him to keep their edge. Instead of recognizing that he wielded disproportionate power (and backing off to let the other legs of the famous Carmack-Romero-Hall tripod work their magic) he systematically retaliated whenever their creativity didn't jive with whatever programming shit he was currently on., first driving off Hall and then Romero.

I mean, for fuck's sake, this is a man who:

1. Had to nearly be held at gunpoint to add secret walls to Wolfenstein.

2. Thought nothing of disappearing for three weeks down the asshole of Florida somewhere in a motel to write one of the Quake engines (he told no one where the fuck he was, he's the head of the company at this time).

3. Decided at one point than "maximum efficiency" could only be achieved among his employees at iD by pitting their weekly performance against each other "Deathmatch Style". People _were_ fired over this, office morale plummeted (gee, I wonder why?).

4. Is a staunch advocate of the "objectivist philosophy". I have never met a self-proclaimed objectivist who was not an exploitative piece of hypocritical shit, much like its original founder Ayn Rand.

5. Likes Diet Coke. Who the fuck likes Diet Coke? Only goddamn aliens, that's who.

They had the perfect fucking tripod, man: Hall brings the lore, Romero brings the gameplay, Carmack brings the tech. Instead they let the entire enterprise become completely servile to whatever autistic shit Carmack happened to be on at the time.

You have to admit, it breeds a ruthlessness and self-motivation that gets results. A disproportionate amount of CEOs are Objectivists despite the Overton window moving pretty far leftward.

He really fucked up Doom's early development by refusing to listen to Tom Hall. Hall wrote the Doom Bible and understood that Doom needed to be a series of levels. Carmack walks in and demands that it be a seamless interconnected world. Hall says this is a terrible idea, and also a huge technical problem for no gain. He spends months doing it. Then Carmack changes his mind again and says to change it back. Carmack was good at tech stuff, absolutely shit at being a good team member and shit at general game design stuff. He has an anti-social streak that none of the other guys at id had.
>>7362410
The cat was named Mitzi, and it was a gift from his relatives. It was even in the credits of some of their early games. Apparently it peed on the couch, and Carmack's response was to take it to the vet and have it put down. The other team members were basically "wot did you do that for?" Again, there's a general trend of Carmack being kind of a dick. And maybe autistic. Killing an animal that other people might obviously be attached to without consulting any of them is the kind of maladjusted behavior you expect from an autistic person. He did not foresee any complications from putting the unofficial studio mascot down because it peed on the couch.

Is there a good place to read about this? I don't remember it in Masters of Doom.
>1. Had to nearly be held at gunpoint to add secret walls to Wolfenstein.
Yea, this was a Tom Hall thing. Hall felt that Wolf/Doom needed secrets. He also felt that games need some kind of reason to do the things you do. A motivation that takes you from A to B to C. Carmack's "plot in a porno" autism completely ignores that Doom fundamentally works because it has this progression of you descending deeper and deeper into hell. The story is very thin, but its existence holds the game together. Elements like Doom Guy, Hell, the demons, Daisy the Rabbit, the environments you pass through -- these are all story. If you swap in Clippy battling mouse cursors, it's a totally different game. Doom II: Hell on Earth feels different because it's, you know, set on earth sometimes. A level on earth or a level in Hell feel different even if the limited engine blurred the lines. It's the story the player tells themselves through settings and mechanics. And Hall understood that the game needed this. Players needed to feel a reason to finish each map. Carmack didn't understand any of it, and was highly resistant to Hall's sometimes very important ideas. He even had to fight Carmack to get teleporters and flying enemies added.

He didn't take her to be put down. This is in Masters of Doom. He was even listed as Carmack's wife in the company contacts, she was a bit of a mascot of early id. Then she got old and started pissing on furniture and shit. Carmack said he analyzed it from an objective point of view and realized Mitzi was a net negative in his life and impeding his work, so he dropped her off at an animal shelter. When he told Romero and the others, Romero said "DUDE! You know they'll put her down right? She's going down man, down to Chinatown!" And Carmack's response was a shrugging "Mmmm" and to return to his work.

Carmack was known to run id like a workaholic tyrant in the later years especially as the company expanded. Working crunch hours was not something he thought you should have to be made to do but something you WANTED to do, if you weren't that type he got rid of you. Busting your ass working insane hours is what Carmack considered showing initiative and that's the type of people he wanted. And to be fair to him, he was working those hours right along with everyone.

Hi, this is John John Romero, discoverer and founder of John Romero and CEO of the Romero Corporation. I happened to encounter this thread at random and so am in a position to answer your question. You'll be pleased to learn that John Romero will, coincidentally, be releasing the Daikatana source code tomorrow. He will also be unveiling a new Daikatana American-made anime series, which will be released (on Peacock) within a few months of the announcement. Glad to be of service here, and I hope you enjoyed my ".plan update", heh heh. Keep on keepin' on, Daikatana fans!

Thanks for the correction, anon. I think the difference in response between Romero and Carmack is illuminating, though. Not even a sad, "Oh, well, it's for the best." Just a shrug because she was a "net negative in his life". Aka smother grandma with a pillow because her constantly asking for iced tea and pool boys is impeding my work.
