What rare gaming items do you own? I have many, but this is a debug prototype of an unreleased and unannounced English version of Starfy. It has foul language because it is a rough translation made by the Japanese team.

It isn't documented, it was never even announced. However, there was a Nintendo Treehouse interview that mentioned an early Starfy translation they received which had swearing in it. It sounded like it was the DS game, but maybe his memory was wrong, because this version does indeed have swearing. The graphics have also been partially updated to English, such as a new title logo. The debug functions are also more functional than the remnants left in the retail game.

The guys on youtube opening it without the key are taking the case apart using special bits, and those screws are actually in so tight that you'll scar them trying to open them, I just picked the lock instead.
And the guy on ebay selling the key is selling the program key, not the key for the front panel.
I actually bought one of those...
Only to find out the program lock was modded ( read: guts removed ) to make it rotate with anything inserted.
It was a bitch and a half to restore that lock to function again. Had to file the wafers into the right shape to fit the lock and key.

I will admit I was masterfully retarded when I got it without very little research into it, thinking it would play any NES carts like that one demo kiosk unit and didnt realize it would only play specific made carts, but I got it for such a steal I really didnt care too much and its still near on its own

Let me explain how your bluff was called you dummy. Japanese called it Stafy, or 「スタフィー」 (Sutafī); if it was Starfy, it'd be 「スターフィー 」 (Sutāfī). "Starfy" reeks of NoA Treehouse, but even they called it "Stafy" in Smash consistently up until the first official localization release. If Japanese made a rough translation, it'd certainly be Stafy like they've been using for every game, not Starfy. inb4 you try again in a little while after editing your epic mistake.

Well not all versions have video out enabled ( you can actually patch the firmware to enable it anyways, but it was sold as an option ), but for those you had to connect it to a PC to output the footage to.
Mine has the video option enabled, so both the Video OUTs on the back work, they both display one of the screens, top or bottom, but you can use the DIP switches to change what the Video OUTs do, like making one of them output both the screens to a single monitor.

So the IS-Nitro Capture and IS-Nitro Video are specifically for capturing footage of retail games.
the IS-Nitro Emulator I have doesn't read retail games, you have to connect it to a pc, load a rom into a virtual cartridge for it to read, hence emulator.
But it still has the Video OUTs option enabled, so regardless it can output to one or more screens.

Hey, staRfy-kun! Did you know that the NES Earth Bound prototype actually INCREASED in value every single time it has been sold? This is despite the fact that: 1) Its ROM released back in 1998, 2) the advent of repros meant more people can play it on real hardware, and 3) Nintendo officially released the same thing as "EarthBound Beginnings" on Wii U Virtual Console in 2015. Buyers who actually pay will care about the legitimacy and condition of the cartridge, and especially if you've got one from a major company like Nintendo in which leaked prototypes are coveted and rare, you're basically set as long as you keep it in one piece. In short, the only thing you need to worry about is time!

The style of the translation is not like what you'd see from somebody who knows English as a native or near native language. Plus the swearing is in line with that Treehouse interview. Why is it Starfy and not Stafi? Even this version still has Stafi in the credits like the JP retail. Really I have no clue. Starfy makes more sense, and at least somebody going back to the original game realized this. The title logo graphic is half redesigned, with the top still "densetsu" in kanji, but Starfy, with an R, in English characters.

It can still be a non-native AND not-inhouse, those things aren't mutually exclusive. If the names in the credits are identical to the Japanese release then they probably didn't get around to it and there's no way to know for sure.

I was trying to find a better setup to hold my phone while recording, but didn't feel like searching any more so I just made what i could without it. There is no jump cut, i just turned off my phone's light when I went from showing the cart in the SP to showing the gameplay screen. From looking online, it sounds like the STR check just hangs the game when reenabled in retail while here it draws lines of dots for whatever debug use that holds, the Map Jump menu has zero functionality in retail here it works fully. This also has full stop by pressing select, and a frame by frame mode when pressing Select+B which also turns on a debug display at the top left of the screen that shows what I'm guessing are coordinates along with other stuff.
I originally meant to upload directly here so I turned the sound off, but the video was too large for here so i uploaded it elsewhere. I'll reup it later with sound if that holds any value. I didn't show the title screen because I have to hold stuff back. Also note the TOTAL text is in English which I believe is in Japanese in retail.
I wish I knew more about the history.

No, I'm OP. I just buy shit. I have no clue why exactly the Starfy proto exists, why they were already calling it Starfy, or why it was in the hands of some reseller who also had Disney protos (he never gave me a clear answer). My guesses are the Japanese team wanted to release it in the USA (this much was stated in an interview), whoever was doing a rough translation in Japan knew enough English to know Starfy's name was a play on star/starfish and the wordplay only really made sense in English if they kept it as "star," and that it came from that seller who also had a bunch of Disney protos because... uh... I really have no clue. I can't imagine Nintendo would've allowed Disney to publish an IP that Nintendo themselves jointly owned eith Tose, but I guess that's a remote possibility?

To get the data on the cartridge alone would require both the dev cart itself (duh) and an official GBA gangwriter because afaik you can't just use off the shelf cart flashers to program an official GBA devcart, but orrect me if I'm wrong. Sure it isn't out of the question, but to have all that equipment plus the know how to partially restore some debug functions as shown in the video and add in a new debug display to Starfy of all things is just incredibly unlikely, plus going the extra mile to create an entirely new font. Is it possible, sure, but pretty much in the same way that every prototype out there *could* just be some autismo making hacks.

>Kyorosuke got localized to Kyoro.
It's not so much a "localization" as it is just a shortened form of the Japanese name. Now why >>7361961 got shortened while >>7363582 didn't, I have a theory. According to https://www.starfywiki.org/wiki/Densetsu_no_Starfy_4/Internal_character_and_enemy_names "Kyoro" is an internal shorthand for Kyorosuke (later known in TLS as Moe). If true, that supports OP's assertion that it was translated by Tose, or at least had access to the same development materials. Also of note is Kyorosuke was originally known as "Kyrororun" in the unreleased Game Boy Color version of DnS, so developers were clearly attached to the "Kyoro" part of his name...

>> No.7409616

>>7409423
It was probably always intended as a draft just to make it easier for the localize-it-or-not decision maker to play through, so names probably didn't get the most attention since those would probably be entirely up to Nintendo of America to finalize.

>> No.7409786

>>7409423
But if that were the case, Yadokarita's internal shorthand is "Yado". It seems strange that they'd use one and not the other. Maybe "Kyoro" simply was his name at some point before release and this is actually a localization of a late beta?

It's hard to make heads or tails out of this thing without actually being able to examine it first-hand.

I've legitimately owned one or more than one of every console and its variants, the only reason I collected these at all, were just to dump. The only system that defeated me was the Super A'Can, most of those games ended up being dumped as somebody from the assembler forums back then, bought out the rights for the games from the publisher and released the roms that way, it was actually easier to buy the company than it was to locate the carts.
