/CRT/ general: behemoth edition
previous thread >>7284367

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

they need a 14V 3.5A power supply but I can't find the real one anywhere.

As long as I find a 14V power supply with 3.5 or more amps, and a tip that fits I should be good right? Are those "universal" power supplies that come with all the different tips as shady as they look, or is that a good option?

Can anyone tell me what issues they can see on this TV, and what the name for the issue is?
This is a sharp something or other.

I managed to miraculously find a that mentions exactly what each service menu option does, and what the expected values are, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to fix the two most glaring issues, the top left horizontal sagging and the bottom right vertical sagging.

where can I find a simple guide to monitor calibration? I'd like to at least adjust the brightness/contrast. There is no option in the OSD to adjust gamma but there is a very small metal knob which probably does affect G2. I don't think I'll mess with it while the monitor is working well. You're looking at a viewsonic p225 at 1280x1024, 85hz.

I keep the color temperature preset to 6500k though I read that standard settings for most monitors from the factory is 9300k.

My current vga adapter doesn't have the power to take advantage of the full bandwidth. As such, 1280x1024 is the happy middle ground between resolution and hertz; at least until my new one arrives in the mail.

At 1920x1200, the image folds over itself on the left side of the screen (possibly the right too). I haven't gone to the trouble of adjusting the image to fix it since such resolutions are nearly unusable for desktop applications.

Although it is in dire need of calibration, I'm satisfied enough to contemplate getting rid of my 20-inch D-series. I'm hoping that a satisfactory flat panel will become available by the time this thing dies.

Bought this Matsui 1420A recently - the reason I chose an 80s TV instead of a 90s TV is purely aesthetic reasons.
I haven't used a CRT in like 15 years so bear with me here if I sound stupid.
This TV only has an RF port and an audio jack, and I'm looking to hook it up to my PC as a second monitor and play emulated games on it. What would be the best solution for this? Preferably with as few adaptors as possible

>> No.7333693

>>7333241
It made a huge difference in the 70s and 80s when shadowmask sets were shittier. Sony dominated because of how noticeable it was. But into the 90s the difference became less meaningful. In fact I'm pretty over the trinitron hype. Arcade cabinets typically used slot type shadowmask monitors so for retro gaming it's perfect. In later TVs the difference is the aperture grille will have an advantage in brightness but I think the shadowmask looks more natural. The image looks almost like its been woven. It also doesn't help that finding a curved trinitron with component is a bitch and flat vs curved will matter more than grille vs mask.

Shit, really? Like how badly absolute shit?
I do actually happen to have a VGA to composite already so I could get the composite to RF too, but if it's gonna look completely awful I'm not sure if it's worth the effort

>> No.7333779

Yeah I guess just try to find an old VCR at a thrift store that has composite in and RF out because that's likely the cheapest converter you'll be able to find

And yeah you're essentially taking RGB via VGA, then squishing all that video information together into composite, then squishing it again into coaxial. So it's gonna look bad. You should look for an old VGA PC CRT if you want your old games to look good.

Still though if you decide to try i'm not sure if you'll be able to get it working unless you can output a 240p signal, just because the TV probably cant handle anything bigger, but i really dont know.

Tell me this, /crt/. When any retro console is rendering the images at a sub-SD resolution, say 256x224, is the horizontal draw actually driven at a lower than standard frequency or does it get interpolated to match the output standard? And what about the vertical resolution, does the console actually wait during the next field or does it generate a blank field? it still sends 60 fields per second, but the second field which is supposed to be drawn on the lines between the previous field are actually shifted up by a line and drawn over the old ones. It's just a formating trick of 480i. As for the various resolutions, my understanding is that since the TVs are syncing to the blanking signal, anything that you can fit between the standard blanking timings is fare game, so yes if the resolution is only 224 instead of 240, it's sending extra blanking data, which the tv doesn't mind because the blanking doesn't encode any data besides existing in order to prepare the syncing

I've got this fucking massive sony trinitron wega (model KV-30HS420) and I use it to play gamecube and wii games in 480p but I was worried about input lag since it's an HD CRT and supposedly has post processing and digital conversion for analog signals
I looked up some info and apparently it's recommended to go in the service menu and set YSOW and HDPT to 0 instead of 1, and then set MIDE to 63 in order to reduce input lag/disable the image processing
the problem is I don't even know if that affects anything for 480p component or even 240p composite signals (when I have the n64 or the atari flashback hooked to it), and I don't even know what those settings are and I'm really hesitant to start fucking in a service menu and potentially fuck things up, it's so hard to find reliable info for anything like this and some random comment I read said messing with HDPT might not even be a good idea
what should I do? should I just leave it as is? I already messed with the regular settings to get the picture right but even for something like sharpness I couldn't even notice a difference when I messed with it and don't even know what it does

Well it's the end of the day after errands/shopping it's too dark to take pics, and I was just planning to take it and plug it in at home to see if it powers on, but this thing is not only bulky but HEAVY and I need another help. Had to leave it. The rust I saw seemed to wipe off easily with my hand, and I saw dust and light cob webs. The other issue is space, I'm sure my family would be puzzled and furious with me lugging this thing inside the house with no space. This TV is somewhere in the 40inch screen size, or maybe high 30 inches, but if this thing is actually in good working order it would be glorious to play on. What a dilemma... May go back tomorrow IF I figure something out...

Hey guys, I haven't played retro games in a decade, but I bought a new house with an extra bedroom beyond our needs that I've turned into a little den/office for myself. I want to get a small 16"-20" consumer grade TV to put on the unused left side of my desk where this printer is so one can play games close by on the couch adjacent to my desk.

All I want to play are the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and Playstation 1. What types of video cable connections do I need for those consoles? What brand and model of TV's would you recommend for them? I'm not looking to spend a lot here, I just want something to enjoy these old games I liked as a kid with my own kids, when they're old enough.

Thanks in advance.

16 inches basically doesn't exist as a consumer set. The most common below that is 13 (typically had a 14" tube with a bezel).
20 inchers are easy enough to find. In that size, Sony makes a number of good sets, (KV-20 series). Stick with Sony or JVC (L'art or D-series, but both are hard to find in 20 inches). Pic related is my prized 32" D-Series, was never used as a main TV. Some Toshibas can be good, but I've had bad experiences with them dying/getting a wonky picture.

But biggest factor in goodness/long-term usability will be how heavily the set was used/abused.

Composite video will be on basically every set you come across, and is all you need to play the consoles you mentioned. It's possible to get better picture, but that's a long discussion and probably not worth it to you. Take care not to fall into a rabbit hole of tube obsession like me. Have fun.

Is 14" big enough to game on for an hour or more without headaches, at the distance shown in the previous pic I posted? Will you be able to see enough detail, especially in N64 games?

As for composite video, is it better or worse than S video? Do those consoles support that? Is RGB something you can find in consumer CRTs? Also, I remember that CRT TVs have this awful high pitched ringing noise which seems to be something only I can hear. Is there a way to mitigate that? I now have tinnitus and hearing any high pitched noise like that gives me a headache really quickly now.

Smaller tubes rarely have s-video. It's a much "cleaner" signal than composite, with slightly less muted colors and much less blur, but many older games are full of dithered graphics that don't blend without composite video blur. It's up to yo whether you want it blurry with transparencies and gradients/extra colors, or blocky graphics with pinstripes and checkerboards.

You won't find a consumer CRT tv that doesn't whine at 15.734khz. There are other kinds of tubes that work at double the frequency, but they've gotten more expensive in the last few years. Maybe you'd prefer to emulate with CRT-Royale

>> No.7366330

It will be too small. 20" is the smallest I'd go for that distance. You're gonna turn the couch sideways, I assume?

S-Video is better than Composite video. Yes, all of those consoles support it. No, RGB is not a thing on consumer sets in the US, but YPbPr (a signal from which a theoretically identical signal to RGB may be derived) is a thing. However, none of those consoles are equipped to output it. Honestly, I would recommend you stick with either composite or S-Video, and forget about RGB. Yes, it looks nice, but is it truly worth the amount of work? If you're not super into electronics, then no. (I'm an electrical engineer, and I can't get enough of this stuff)
This goes back to what I said about "be careful not to fall into a rabbit hole." Over the course of 2 years, I spent countless hours tube hunting, hundreds of dollars and hours building custom cables and fabricating sync stripping PCBs. Did I have fun? Yeah. Do I think it's what you should do, when you said your priority is sharing these games with your kids? No. Stay away, and remember that you're here to play games, not ogle pixels.

As >>7366313 said, the ~15.6KHz whine is just how it is. You'll probably lose the ability to hear it eventually, most adults do.

>It will be too small. 20" is the smallest I'd go for that distance. You're gonna turn the couch sideways, I assume?
No, I have a TV set up with modern consoles opposite of where it sits now, I was just going to turn the little CRT TV at an angle so someone laying down with their head near the wall or sitting close to the TV (near the lamp) could play it like that.

Thanks for all the info, I appreciate that you typed that all out for me. I'll chase a 20" Sony or JVC TV and see what I can find locally, and I won't worry about the more esoteric stuff.

First, what is the general footprint, in inches, of a 20" set? You think the case is like 20" wide and similarly long? Secondly, is there a line of Sony or JVC TVs that have a completely flat top instead of sloping back along the side of the tube? I like to put things on top of the TV.

Yeah, it's close to that. You can find these things online for many common sets, like this: https://www.cnet.com/products/sony-kv-27fs100/specs/
30x23x20 inches.
>is there a line of Sony or JVC TVs that have a completely flat top instead of sloping back along the side of the tube?
Professional monitors have this, but the prices people ask for those are absolutely insane nowadays. Just looked, 20-inch Sony pro monitors are going for $1000~$1500 now.

Either way, there is a little space near the front that's flat on both Sony and JVCs, and you can put stuff there, but they all curve back for at least half of the length of the case.

- Analog CRTs have more processing time than digital LCDs due to poor RAMDAC performance

My Sony KV-27S66 started sparking yesterday. I heard some sparking noises and saw brief black flickers on part of the screen. I looked at the back of the TV when this started happening and sure enough there was a spark around the part in the back that glows orange every time that sound was made.
I blew at it with some compressed air and that seemed to stop it for now, but I'm worried what this could be. I've heard it could be just dust, but if it were then why would it start doing this now when it worked perfectly fine for over a year?

I’ve already determined that it’s not the tv, as I played a tape, Karate Kid through my vcr and it looked much better.

The games play without a hitch and the sound works, it’s the video signal that is garbled. The NES has worked for a long time, so I’m not sure if it’s a bad cap or not.

There are exceptions. I used to live in San Antonio, and the Goodwill on the poorest side of town still took them. I even found an 8-inch PVM there once. I also wound up getting a pretty nice 17" Toshiba set that I saw rejected by another thrift store while I was out of town.

This is more of a general analog video question, but maybe someone here can answer it:

When it comes to old analog tapes like VHS/Betamax/Video8/Hi8 what is the best possible output signal? I know you can get SuperVHS players with S-video and most high-end Sony cameras also had S-video output, but what about RGB/Component?

If I managed to hunt down some sort of tape player with component out, would it look any better than S-video? Basically what I'm wondering is if component output benefits all signals, or if the tape itself needs to be recorded with the "component signal data"? Game consoles render their output so I'm assuming they work differently...

rgb/component were way too large of signals for them to use on tapes, all those consumer tape products were chroma subsampled so above s-video there's no difference unless the format converter also cleans up the image with filters. You can get banger audio out of some tapes, though. Professional tape formats exist, but I think in general they jumped straight to digital encoding on tape.

Hello, tourist here from /vg/. Could you please tell me if the following TV is worth picking up? It's a Panasonic TX-36PF10 weighting 78 kg. (171.6 lbs.) and allegedly in perfect condition. no visible composite (yellow connector). You can buy a composite to scart on ebay. It won't improve picture but allow you to connect old consoles to the telly. I know that there are HDMI to Scart converters aswell so you could use that to connect the switch dock but whether it will scale properly with the screen or if you get input lag from the converter I couldn't tell you.

They're good but it's not worth hauling, try to find like a 20 inch 4:3, I think you grossly underestimate how large those are, my old 32 inch widescreen Philips would eat the entire room and thats 37 inch. The problem is probably more gonna be the geometry especially if you play 4:3 content on it, you'll see the bars down side be bent etc. If you've got the massive space required for it and will actually use widescreen content, go for it if it's free just remember since it has 3 scart sockets that only AV1 will be rgb, the rest are for composite and s-video.

>>7382762
>I think you grossly underestimate how large those are
It says exactly how large it is in the manual: 637 x 874 x 588 mm. I'm fine with the size, but what I'm concerned about is its usage and usability vs. the already good TV I have.
>if you play 4:3 content on it, you'll see the bars down side be bent etc
What does that mean? Any way to search for pictures of this? as in, what terms?
>since it has 3 scart sockets that only AV1 will be rgb, the rest are for composite and s-video.
Is that an issue? I don't know what that means nor entails.

Don't even respond, it's ebay sellers trying to justify their scheme. I find new CRT listings daily on Craigslist.

For those who really are noobs, just search for TV, not crt, not fucking sony, just type in TV. Then select expanded area search in options and deselect rvs. So what if you have to drive a little for a nice model, it's a hobby.
