It was AWESOME

I was 13 years old.

I remember to see some screenshots in a magazine lol video game magazines were still relevant those days.

So we had to get a copy of GTA2 for PC to play while we waited for GTA3. Ir was pretty easy to get a pirated game in my country. I remember playing GTA2 for hours, exploring that kind of 3D map. wondering what was inside of the buildings.

And then the day came when we could get GTA3 for the PS2.

Bruh! My head exploded. This was like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time from the Nintengo64 but even better. It was a next step in the evolution of sandbox games, there was anything like it.

There was also the game "Driver" but that game sucked in comparison to GTA3

I also remember that my head exploded when I learned that you could pick up prostitutes and kill them.

I loved the few building you could get in to explore. The magic garage that could repair even an exploded car.

I remember the mysteries about the "dodo plane" it was a challenge to fly it above the mountains to explore the map a little bit more.

The map was a little bit small, you would memorize it in a couple of weeks, but I loved it.

It was awesome man.

A friend and I played the shit out of Driver 2 since we loved cop chases in a large open world. GTA3 was just an extension of that with guns, and we loved it for that. Still remember the first time we played it. Got my hands on a shotgun, and proceeded to unload into a crowd of old people. It wasn't long before we would hang out on top of the casino and see how long we could survive at maximum stars.
Then Vice City came out and you had motorcycles and helicopters, and 3 wasn't worth playing anymore.
Then San Andreas came out and you could swim, fly jets, have turf wars, customize cars, use a jetpack, and Vice City seemed almost primitive in comparison.

Would be nice to play some Multi Theft Auto San Andreas free roam again. I miss jet fights and doing drive by's with Mad Max style fleets. I would post about it on /vm/, but they don't want to play videogames with each other, just post memes about multiplayer games.

Don't really know, I didn't play it myself but I watched my dad and his friends play it.

>lol the goofed off for hours on end with cheats without even playing the first mission
>remember my dad's friend playing and running around, bumps into female pedestrian who's like "hey watch it!" or something
>dad's friend is like "what did you say bitch!?" and blows her heaf off with the sniper rifle
>eventually escalates into a big police chase that ends with SWAT shooting his sports car he found until it explodes

I could barely comprehend what I was seeing. I was only seven and my dad never let me play it (until I was 11 or so anyway), only got to watch it occasionally.

It was mind blowing. I remember asking my cousin, “where does this level end?” I was sure there’d be a limit to how far you could go. The whole open world thing was a brand new concept to me. I had absolutely no idea. Now you factor that new concept in, with all these cars you can take, all these people you can kill, all these little hidden areas on the map, all of the missions, the stores you could go in, it was amazing. I never knew you could have so many options, though it may not seem like much today in comparison to GTA V. I still like GTA III quite a bit.

>Well you're at leasts a fascist and a racist, so you're not fooling anyone by saying that you're not also a conservative.
False. I'm against racists and fascists, which is why I voted for Howie Hawkins in 2020 and Jill Stein in 2016. It's also why I oppose Antifa, BLM, the KKK, Nazis, Commies, Leftists and White Nationalists. You can believe whatever lie you want about me, it doesn't make it true.

>Do you know what fascism and racism are?
Of course. Joe Biden, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin are prime examples of that.

>Do you think they are good things?
Of course not, which is why I oppose extremist hate groups like Antifa, KKK, BLM, Nazis & Commies.

>Do you know what Antifa and BLM are against?
Masculinity, men, straight white men, unborn black babies, black children, black cops, peaceful black men, tough masculine black men, freedom, democracy, straight black men, conservatives, Christians, any minority who don't vote Democrat. They killed innocent black people like Secoreia Turner, Horace Lorenzo Anderson Jr, David Dorn and David Patrick Underwood during their riots. They even burned down black businesses. As a black man, I do not approve of their actions.

Which is exactly why I put Antifa & BLM as enemies in GTA3. Would put the KKK there too if there were some hooded pedestrians. But I did at least put in Nazi pedestrians in GTA3 too.

If you played the PS2 version near release I 100% agree as the experience was something else at the time with it blowing all other games out of the water. Looking through the lense of 20 years of vidya development the vanilla PS2 version is a muddy, blurry mess that is flat out improved by resolution increases (be it via likes of pcsx2 or PC modding).

GTA III for me is the only game I wish I could erase from my memory and experience like it was on release again. I still occasionally remember the feeling of awe and wonder it introduced (future is now and all that) so when I can tap into that emotion the gaming experience is enhanced. Being an older gamer (32 yo) makes one cynical simply because you have seen it all before and I try to avoid falling into the trap of "back in my day...." even if that is merely staved off by the likes of the so-called boomer shooter trend and/or angrily posting about how zoomers do not know what they are missing.

Sure but the PS2 version was king even if not massively known at the time. The main point stands though - playing thew game at (potato by current standards) resolution has its charm for nostalgia and muh feels that cannot be replicated at all due to the world being a different place these days such limitations do not have to be adhered to. I can play the game at 4k and enjoy it but equally appreciate not having to play the game at 640x80 even if that is what I remember. This attitude of mine is what typically triggers autists in the /vr/ crowd as it is not technically authentic but I have always been one to push forwards as old limitations should not control us when the computational power allows us to go beyond.

It took some time to get used to for me.

GTA2 was one of my favourite games in that 99-00 period. I would play that for hours and I wasn't easy with the transition to 3D. I actually used to play GTAIII in its top down view and did not really get used to the 3D until Vice City on the PS2.

I loved the Scarface radio station and didn't pick up on any of the celebrity voice acting. I appreciated all of that a lot more in Vice City when the radio, 80s and celebrity voice cast was front and centre of the game's marketing.

I disagree. Recently I replayed GTA III on a 20" CRT via PS2 and scart and the game looks better than I even remember it. I have played the game on PC and while I prefer how guns work on that version, the game just looks too clean. I like how dirty and film-like the game looked on original hardware. Same goes for VC and SA.

the open city was incredible at the time but felt very empty. I played it when it came out and even then I felt like there was a lack of side activities. You do the main story missions to get money but what do you spend that money on except more ammo? you're supposed to be this criminal but you couldn't push drugs, rob stores, or sell stolen cars. The closest thing would be stealing a cop car or fire truck and doing vigilante missions, not exactly the first jobs you think of when you think "gangster." Sure it's easy to look back and criticize, but I remember even playing as a kid being disappointed that I couldn't rob banks and do criminal stuff except run over random people for pocket change.

That's what made vice city better, not just the 80s setting. You could stick up stores, buy safe houses, unlock new clothes, build up your gang and collect protection money. All stuff that I had wanted to do in III.

The aiming is mostly fine in Vice City, however that mission where you rescue Lance is pretty goddamn hard because you can't use the auto targeting with the M4, instead it uses that first-person manual aiming, which is kind of dogshit with an analog stick, at least when it doesn't allow you to move at the same time, like GTA doesn't in this era.
The closest best thing is the MP5, which isn't even close to as powerful, and it really makes the margins very slim on this mission. It's way easier on PC.

On the other hand, you have the bank robbing mission, where the place is filled with teargas, and it was completely goddamn unplayable on PC back in the day because it made my framerate go down into single digits.

Liberty in 3 was a display of brilliant level design. VC and SA had bigger cities and better stories with more to do, but weren't nearly as carefully constructed as 3's was.
Also the radio was one of the best they've ever produced. GTA 3 is up there with the greatest 3D conversions of all time. Going from GTA 1 and 2 to 3 really felt like a paradigm change, even though you were essentially doing the same shit. Hell, the cars even had a top-down view for nostalgiafags.

What made the PSP look so close to PS2 was its shading capability, because basically everything else is simply inferior. In that aspect I doubt DC could come close, since its shading capabilities are almost one generation behind.

NPC path finding is better on GTA III, not even kidding.

Holy...

Reminds me of the time I modded my house in Skyrim to play my favorite Metal music whenever I entered, and I even put up some band posters on the walls.

Was good but highly overrated. Aiming on the PS2 was autoaim garbage and it felt very choppy. Held a grudge against R* for years because they took forever to bring GTA3 to PC.
Having played GTA 1 and 2, I knew how good of games they were and their potential, but most of the mainstream hadn't touched a GTA prior to GTA3 on PS2.

Marketing genius to bring it to the ignorant masses the way they did.

I was very disappointed because I played and finished Shenmue on the Dreamcast first, and expected GTA III to be even more interactive. To this day I don't really like this type of sandbox games.

Well, then Yakuza is probably more up your speed. GTA was never about that.

I've never played one, but yes, I believe they are Shenmue's kind of spiritual successors, aren't they?
My mistake was probably not knowing what GTA was all about, and I assumed it would be a highly interactive game like Shenmue.
Still, to this day I've never really liked any R* sandbox game to much. Not even RDR 1. I think they are competent, very well made games but very simple mechanically and too bloated.I will try GTA V and RDR 2, if they don't work for me, it must be that I just don't like these type of games and that's that.

GTA V is just that what you described but worse. RDR2 is bit different, deeper than GTA and even RDR1, sure, but it's still the same genre.

If your idea of interactivity is picking up and staring at inert objects, I suppose.
