I always wondered about this. Why'd they do it? They actually briefly made 4 standard during gen7, but then got rid of it.

>> No.7340209

>>7339419
Seeing they had it in the prototypes I have no fucking idea, gave themselves a handicap for no good reason. I'm guessing it just came down to somebody wanting the console to look cooler and less like a traditional square box design. PS2 phat is pretty dope looking but I'd have rather have had the Dreamcast-like design and legit multiplayer.

>> No.7340218

they were far more than two, the ps2 hype was immense and every psx mag was hiring concept artists to shit out what they thought it would look like, I remember one with a dome on top

The PS1 had some... interesting prototype controllers to say the least.

I have no idea what the top button/analog nub-looking thing is on the top-left controller. I assume these prototypes date back to late-1993 at-least since the current design was already finalized by mid-1994.

I always figured they planned to have the HDD at launch, but it wasn't ready/bean counters said no, so they had to hastily add memory card slots back in where they had planned to have 4 controller ports.

It wasn't stolen. Apparently, Sony bought the patient from some sort of liquidation/ auction of Atari patents. The patents for the PS2 case even reference the patents for the Atari Falcon Microbox,.

Yeah I thought it was weird that they had a giant HDD bay but no HDD in sight. My buddy stored weed/cash in there (everyone did I guess?)

Then when he HDD was actually released, it was only available with FFXI, and ultimately like 6 games used it.
