Actually Apple IIs are an example of a platform where emulation always falls short especially in being able to display the (NTSC artifact-based) graphics accurately. If you meant something like a PS1, then there's probably not a huge deal with playing that on emulation. Or even later DOS games from the VGA era. For a lot of 8-bit era stuff, emulation is a much inferior experience.

it's more so the further back you go because in the Apple II era, computer architectures were a lot more "rough", as I can put it. It was closer to being analog electronics and the stuff had a lot of quirks and glitchy behavior that emulation can't really replicate. By the 90s it's not so big a deal because hardware was getting cleaner. If you wanted to play late period DOS games then emulation isn't a big difference for that reason and because you pretty much had the same standardized control schemes you're used to on a PC today. But yeah, an Apple II or Atari 2600 emulator is never truly going to sub for the real thing, whereas there's no particular reason why Day of the Tentacle or Colonization is improved upon by playing it on a real 486 PC.

The TRS-80 Model 1 is such a crude machine, it really is like analog electronics as anon said. The thing was pretty much held together with glue and Popsicle sticks and so you get glitches like those flickery lines on the screen during the game due to contention between the CPU and video circuit. It's really one of those things that emulation can never recreate the feel of. Also the near-total lack of input lag.

Admittedly a lot of people back in the day didn't find its quirks that endearing especially when you saved a BASIC program or document and couldn't get it to load back up (cf. Jerry Pournelle's bitching about his Model 1 in Byte Magazine)

There was another video that I can't find now of a guy running Frogger on a Model III which was a bit more developed machine so it didn't have video artifacts while the game was running, but it also ran a little too fast because the Model III used a newer 3Mhz Z80A CPU instead of the 2Mhz variant the Model I had (though Model I owners sometimes upgraded to Z80As for improved performance).
