Dude, you coulda used literally 3/4s of Atari's boxart. They had fantastic staff artists to stoke your imagination.

Back in the day when every motion picture to be released had at least one if not several dead serious oil paintings for posters. These days...

While it's not the artist's fault, cover art like that set up unrealistic expectations. Especially back then, when looking at the box in the store factored hugely into the decision to buy.

Have you ever PLAYED a game from that era?
Of course they had paint fantastic box covers to inspire your imagination so that the actual limited graphical representation in-game made some kind of sense, other than just "the white block shoots a smaller red block into a line of green squares".

That is what I implied, which is deceptive. Anybody who bought games during that era would agree.

>> No.733170

>>733146
How was that deceptive?
Looking back from today's graphical standards it may seem deceptive, but I think anyone who bought Warlords at the time wasnt expecting a fucking brilliantly rendered knight in shining armor to appear in their RCA wood panelled tv via there Atari 2600 when they got home and plugged it in.

Yes. I had money to buy games as I child, it was given to me by my parents. Now you're just arguing for the sake of argument.

If everyone knew that the box art was not representative of the game, then no game company would spend money on box art, and just put screenshots on the cover. No, I wouldn't have preferred that. But in addition to looking good, box art does serve the purpose of fooling some people into buying the game, that was the intent.

As a child I received this and at no time did I expect brilliant flying fucking dinosaurs. I had no huge expectations as I had other Atari games and knew the calibre of graphics the system was capable of.
The artwork was to excite the mind and to see a fantastic representation of what was basically happening on the screen. If anyone was ever let down by comparing the box art to the on screen happenings then well, as another poster has commented, they were most likely retarded.

I just feel bad that you were five years old with twenty to fifty dollars in you pocket and you walked into a store, saw a VCS game with awesome cover art and bought it believing that the game would look like that when you got it home and then you got it home and were so disappointed that to this day you still believe the artists and producers and stores were trying to trick you. It's just sad all around, like for your parents too who gave you that money. I hope they felt like it was a good investment toward hardening you as a consumer and didn't just feel like they made a mistake trusting you to make your own purchasing decisions and/or thought less of you for being ungrateful.
