Back in my day people played NES games on those "100 games compilations" that they sold alongside DVD players. GBA were rare, but not unknown. And when smartphones were powerful enough to run emulators, a lot of people my ages just play on their phones.

Even in the 3rd world there are always wealthy people who can afford toys and there were even unique consoles for those markets. The white PS1, 60HZ euro shell SNES and iQue come to mind as some that really stand out.
I've been to a lot of 3rd world countries and famiclones were everywhere. I've found old classics like subor, micro genius, dendy, etc in malls as recently as a few years ago. Some are very good quality and have amazing compatibility. I have one that looks like a ridiculous piece of shit but runs everything I've tried. Games with chips other clones can't handle, FDS.

in 1992 we got Dendy, you may have heard the story from the Kinamania guy. "officially" sold bootleg NES with bootleg carts, that had its "official" stores and TV show. fun times.
later we got Mega Drive and actual official SNES distribution, except no one in the country could afford non-bootleg games, so SNES tanked and MD took over.
then came PS one and CD piracy. Saturn and N64 were virtually nonexistent, you only read about them in the gaming magazines. but after that, PS2 made piracy way harder, so this put a cross on the consoles in the country. around that time, PCs gradually got cheaper, so PC gaming completely took over for years with counter strike and Heroes 3.

I only know a thing like this happened on the Dendy TV show. the host of the show played Super Mario 16 first (I assume), so he concluded that all of the graphics in Joe & Mac got "ripped off" from SM16, and the hammers were "probably taken" from Adventure Island. however, he ended up saying he liked the game, but that it offered "nothing new".

hard to say really, i guess the reason was that it was generally harder, more expensive and not as widely available as PS1, plus I dont think PS2 games got translated to Russian anymore (the pirated translations on PS1 were shit, but it did the trick for most people).
also around that time PCs started to get more and more popular, it went from a luxury to something a regular family could own, and hence people were penny pinching on everything, they preferred buying a PCs instead of consoles for children, "because it allowed you to work and study and not just play games".
PC also had by far more widespread piracy with translations, and around that time licensed Russian publishers started to catch up with official game releases with decent translations for prices rivaling pirates (like $4–12 per game or so, iirc). PS2 either had $50 officially distributed games, or pirated releases which were not widely available.

US to PAL SNES adaptors only had one slot. Never saw imports sold by retailers, but they were easy to get hold of from the swap shops and small video stores in the UK in 92.

My parents bought us and my siblings an Atari XEGS for christmas, in 1993. We played the shit out of it, and we were happy loading tapes and using multicarts made in Chile by a local company called Turbosoft. Funny enough nowadays the chilean Atari community is one of the biggest Atari groups in the world, always coming with some neat projects that get featured in AtariAge.
Years later i got a Megajoy II after begging for months. I remember beating SMB on it after weeks. Eventually it broke because the poor quality of it.

Best fucking time I've ever had during my childhood. I did have a PS1 and occasionally played on my cousin's SNES but always dropped by in one of those places to choose any 6th gen game from the long rows of covers attached to the wall (they even served hot dogs and ice cream). Skip to late 2000s and there it was teenage me spending cents every weekend to play the 360 (there was only one PS3 and 2 or 3 exclusives since it took years to jailbreak them). This kind of business was already declining in the eary 2010s , but the flu killed the last rental store here.

This, I played my PS1 with pirated copies until around 2007, when it broke. Before that I had a Megadrive, and it was common back then to rent games in video stores as cartridges were very expensive and not worth buying at all (my only game was Sonic 2), CDs and the pirate scene were a godsend for the third world. My family wasn't poor or anything, it's just the economy was really bad and made it hard to justify spending money on video games.

I guess technically I still am "behind" the current generation, but I don't really like newer games so it's whatever.

We had plenty of access to the best consoles though. The exception was nintendo, that always snubbed Brazil even to this day. So we had Master System, Mega Drive as official releases, PS1 and PS2 were brought in by retailers, becoming major success due to piracy, and Nintendo got what they deserved and the country was filled with NES and SNES clones, even if they did tried to bring the SNES officially in the country. Only the N64 had it's share in the end. Don't know how it was for the GB and GBC though
