Scattered to the winds, the IRC died a fairly quick death when Discord first took off a few years ago and I watched everyone gradually disappear from the channel. Most of the cool guys were rolled into Term's Doominati, but then that died when the man himself left for greener pastures. Marty's community picked up some of the pieces from that, but it's not really a Doom or /vr/-oriented place otherwise. A few of us clung together in personal servers too, but there's no real equivalent to #vr as far as I'm aware. I guess there's that server for the Blood project, but I can't speak to its quality at all and I think its intent was purely temporary organization from the start, not a lasting community or general purpose hangout.

Apologies to the rest of the thread for making a post like this, but it sucks when the people you used to hang with are just gone and I think a man should know what happened.

>> No.7328506

Just make /vr/ Doom servers with regularity and a community can rise again. The key word is with regularity. There's one anon who hosts DM servers now and then and posts them here, but it's seemingly random when he does.

N00b warning - this mod is so abysmaly unstable you literally cannot (quick)save midgame because the maps are apparently too big ever for KMQ2 to handle most of them without any issues (luckily there are some smaller intermission levels just for making saves if you suck); Also applies to other Doom TCs made by the same author.

I sometimes wish for some nostalgiafag to be able to try fixing the Q2 Oblivion mod at last,
have been thinking about it occasionally ever since all those years when I first found it included in a old PCgamer-esque magazine DVD bundle once (before actually playing the regular Q2 SP campaign for some reason) and after trying out the 2 official addons (and Zaero too) I am still baffled by how decent it was compared to shit like Juggernaut or Unseen quality-wise while also being a free mod.

I found a dehacked tutorial and it's surprisingly easy, at least the basic stuff. Like you can make the mancubus never stop firing until you break line of sight, pic related, you can reskin the baron of hell into a cyberbaron and make it fire rockets (I had to cut two death frames to make it fit since I dunno how to add states yet), reskin the cyberdemon into the ones from Ribbiks' maps and give it 1000hp, etc.

It's still entirely possible to do in vanilla, the BLOCKMAP fix in GZDoom just makes it a bit more reliable. It's not like they fucked with the damage values (and actually the more accurate RNG table in GZDoom would lower the average damage, vanilla pRNG liked to roll high), they just fixed a shitty bug that makes your shots go straight through enemies at random.

I'm coming here to beg for help with DOSBox because this is something I've been stuck on for nearly a decade and after spending this entire weekend trying to solve it, I'm completely out of patience. I have no idea how to get DOSBox cpu cycles to just WORK ok. I want the cpu speed of the game to be accurate to the machine I'm emulating (SVGA S3 Trio64) without exceeding any frame limits the game I'm currently playing may have.

I've tried mixing and matching every CPU core, type, cycles mode etc. and it either runs like a laggy slideshow or way too fucking fast. I understand emulation for every console under the sun but DOS is absolutely fucking mystifying me and after years of searching online I still don't have a fucking solution to this.

>Whee! Lots of hate mail from strafe-jupers!

>Strafe jumping is an exploitable bug. Just because people have practiced hard to allow themselves to take advantage of it does not justify it's existance. When I tried fixing the code so that it just didn't work, I thought it changed the normal running movement in an unfortunate way.

>In the absense of powerups or level features (wind tunnels, jump pads, etc), the game characters are supposed to be badasses with big guns. Arnold Schwartzenegger and Sigourney Weaver don't get down a hallway by hopping like a bunny rabbit.

>This is personal preference, but when I play online, I enjoy it more when people are running around dodging, rather than hopping.

Sometimes I will feel like I want to play a game but can't bring myself to do it, it feels like too much effort. In these situations I just force myself to open the game, and start playing as quickly as possible, once I get moving around in the game world the feeling of apathy dissipates quickly. The Red Cross owns the rights and all to a red cross on a white background representing medical aid, and they've been throwing their weight around in recent years, threatening various publishers and devs over the use of their logo (though in my opinion this is practically like a genericized trademark).

The result is, new games don't feature red crosses on white medikites anymore (or ambulances), and re-releases of old games will now edit them out. Different re-releaeses have different approaches, Doom initially had them replaced with red and white pills in the PS3/360 days, and Duke would do the same, Quake 2 would substitute it with that ugly blue symbol you might see on some ambulances, I don't know what it's called. The recent ports of Doom simple colored the crosses green instead, the rerelease of Doom 64 coloring the crosses bright blue.

Then there's the Wolfenstein 3D levels in Doom 2, and the Waffen SS troopers, due to classifications and ratings in Germany giving entertainment products a hard time for featuring Nazis and Hitler (even in the context of blasting them into pieces for score), the swastikas are replaced with a generic symbol as seen in the Euro releases of the later Wolfenstein games, and they shave off Hitler's mustache, the "Schutzstaffel!" voiceline is also dubbed over. For new AAA releases of series like Wolfenstein, they will apparently do a separate German version, but re-releasing old games, publishers very seldom bother doing that.

This is kinda shitty, but it's a lot better than how goddamn lazy it was in the 360/PS3 era, where they just really shittily turned the SS troopers into regular Zombiemen with fucked up offsets, then just removed all the Wolf 3D/Nazi references from MAP31 and MAP32, leaving the walls bare and playing .midis from previous levels.

Supposedly though, German ratings have become more lenient in recent years.

As far as being a port of Doom 64, it's pretty good, it lets you customize your controls as you want, you can turn off the Nintendo 64 style of blurry filtering, and you can even toggle between normal red blood for monsters, and the green blood which is what they got in Japan. The new release also comes with a bonus episode, which I thought was pretty good.

Overall, it's basically a polished up version of Doom 64EX (same lead dev), but it doesn't let you do stuff like jumping or using freelook, to keep it strictly like the original game. The big downside though is that it can't really run any custom content, like mapsets, at least not what I'm aware of.

Trying a new workflow to produce seamless skies with Blender for GZDoom. With just a little bit of clean up in GIMP, the Sky tiles fine, although, I have to raise the mountains up. It takes very little to occlude them entirely. GZDoom appears to be sinking the image down a number of pixels, because the things on the horizon, really should be much higher, it's like the bottom has been cropped by GZDoom automatically (I'll post the sky image next post). Anyway, I'm torn. I like the idea that maps can be played on any source port or vanilla, but png skies just look so good.

I just copied what was already inside the Valiant dehacked - create the two different attack cycles in the states, and give one to the melee attack and one to the ranged attack.

Valiant uses a state with a RandomJump action to randomly choose an attack. Original Doom does not have this action, so Crispy Doom simply ignores it and it runs straight to the 2nd attack

Wait, nevermind, I incorrectly assigned the 2nd (ranged) attack to the 2nd attack cycle, instead of to the RandomJump action, like in Valiant. That's why it was only doing that attack at distance. Played the HL1 expansions, first OF and then Blue Shift like an anon suggested. It was a good suggestion, OF definitely felt like a fuller experience (but I knew going into Blue Shift that it was just a bonus mission so my expectations were set accordingly).
That moment in OF where you get teleported to Xen for all of five seconds and then come back after one short platforming section is a better scare than anything intended by the devs of any HL game
Going to see if I can bug one of my friends into play through HL1 so I can subsequently bug him into playing Decay with me.

>> No.7332451

you can play decay solo, the fan port has a mind swap button so you can jump between both characters to do puzzles, which can be annoying but doable
it adds an odd layer of resource management as you need to decide who gets what ammo and goes into what combat encounter, since there are no checkpoints, but playing that way is mostly a tedious experience for people really determined to play it
also try uplink while you're at it, little stand alone demo made like a week before release, takes 20 minutes total

Dude I don't know anything about coding or modding, aside from copy/pasting sprites and sounds in Slade. I just watched a 20-something minute dehacked tutorial video by Doomkid, and then started plugging numbers from one table into another in WhackEd. It's super easy, but super tedious. That's what I want to stress: I'm a total noob and it's as easy as plugging numbers from one table to another. Nothing I am doing is cutting edge, lol, aside from how bad assed extended dehacked is. Someone worked really hard on this, and you people should use it.

I dunno what you mean about the D4V mod. I'm the anon who made that short D4V map so far. I haven't tried recreating the D4V monsters in dehacked since it'd also involve changing all the projectiles, but I imagine it's all the same thing I've been doing. I'll actually take a look and see how the teleporting archvile or how the timed exploding projectiles are made

I'm missing something - the cybermancubus melee attack uses VileAttack to send you flying, but it only causes 20 damage, compared to the ~90 damage of the arch-vile. I know the arch-vile attack causes splash damage, hence the ~70 extra damage, but I don't see why the cybermanc doesn't cause the splash damage and the vile does.

Does anyone have cool ideas for a monster they wish they had? Here is what I have so far

Open it up in a map editor and use thing number 99-101 to see the new monsters. 99 is grey imp from hg.wad, 100 is valiant pyroknight (its missing the custom projectiles but monster behavior is same, its just a test) and 101 is the cybruiser

I feel more like it more or less has a similar approach to bhop physics to that of Quake 1's, but it's more simplified because all you need to do is hold the forward key and look left or right as you jump cus the mouse is the only thing that determines your air control as opposed to also using the strafe keys. I think it's the same with any movement key, which is where I can see your arcade stick analogy, but it's more efficient to do it with the forward key. That, and I'm pretty sure you hit the speed cap right as soon as you start jumping and AFIAK there's no way to go beyond it. I remember in the HD remake Hell and Damnation it had a default binding to immediately switch to the rocket launcher/minigun weapon and fire a rocket for rocket jumping, but I think that'd only be viable for accessing certain platforms rather than also for a speed boost cus like I said, you pretty much hit max speed after one normal jump. That and I don't remember any points in the game, be it the original or HD version, where you "needed" to rocket jump to get to a platform cus the levels were built more like flat planes with ramps and bridges to higher levels (not literally of course, but more so that most of the verticality of a given level, if it had any, could only be accessed via angled geometry). Same could be said about the secrets, too. That being said, it's been a while since I played Painkiller, so I may have gotten most of this wrong, that and my wording might be a little autistic at the moment. I am absolutely positive about the bhop physics, however.

Not to comment on the quality of your thing (looks fun btw), but is it just me, or is the timing for custom weapon/hand animations almost always the same in Doom mods? I dunno what it is, but aside from ones where the animation of the sprites isn't as fluid (i.e. ones where it uses the vanilla animations as a basis or traces over them), I feel like certain weapon mods almost always have the same kind of movement and impact. I might be wrong, but maybe it's just cus of how Doom handles sprite animation somehow?

Playthrough video of map05 of the extra levels of 2048 units of /vr/ is up. This level is more difficult than Black Crest, but in a bad way. While the map looks good, it has an arch-vile/revenant trap that seems impossible to be dealt with on a blind playthrough and the final fights that seems impossible unless you memorize the spawning patterns. But again, that could just be me not understanding how to deal with things. I have no idea how to properly tackle the arch-vile trap, so I devised a cheesy way that is "reliable" (as in works 10% of the times). Also a door with health rubs me the wrong way.

I am experimenting with creating a good-looking double-speed chaingun. I looked at slow-motion footage of the super chaingun and for some reason the rate of fire is inconsistent. It should fire every other frame, but instead it sometimes fires two frames in a row and sometimes goes two frames without firing.

Anyway, so far the best-looking thing I came up with is simply the Valiant chaingun, except the muzzle flash lasts one frame and disappears one frame. I had to add additional invisible frames with the light action because the 2-duration light causes a dizzying strobe effect. I want to make a super chaingun with extra rotation frames in between. I tried before but I failed to make the CHGF frames sync up. I'll try again

>>7335625
No those are two different things. I doubt any mapper would want to use both in the same map, it's just a proof of concept that extended dehacked is super powerful and so easy to use a noob like me can make stuff and you don't need to replace things/states like you used to. Relatively. Quake isn't for everyone. Play Quake's mission packs Scourge of Armagon, and Dissolution of Eternity, and delve into the modding community with Arcane Dimensions. The mission packs are really, really good, with new enemies and new weaponry. Arcane Dimensions might be exactly what you need to enjoy Quake in the end. Quake never got a sequel like Doom did with new enemies to round out its roster and keep things fresh - even the mission packs only add a few new enemies. But AD goes full ham on that shit.

Is there any way to legally acquire Enemy Territory: Quake Wars? The Steam version was pulled, there's no GOG version, and I can't even find a key on G2A.
Do I need to consult a tracker/MEGA?
