The most difficult for me were Kirby's Dream Course (I kind of stink at that one), Avalanche (because I suck at Puyo Puyo), and getting the high score in Block Ball, but none of the mainline games were ever that difficult.

I had a fucking blast playing it at age 12 with my friend.

What they need to do is make more difficult kirby games (64 is going in the right direction but still pretty easy) with the mainline story being easy to complete. Kirby Super Star for the Wii or whatever it's called is actually really good and challenging and it's co-op.

Give it a try if you liked Super Star

I hate to use this buzzword, but does anyone else feel like Kirby Super Star is one of the most soulful games ever made?
I'm sure it's partially nostalgia but the variety of short game modes, fun abilities with expanded movesets from past games (and even compared to DL3 and 64 for that matter), great graphics, cute names for the buddies, it's all great. So much charm in one package.

I suspect I love the Great Cave Offensive and the Amazing Mirror for the exact same reasons you hate them because I think Kirby is perfect for exploration.

When you EXPLORE the map you often run into puzzles that can only be solved if you have the right ability. (and If you're not the smartest player and it's your very first Kirby game they can be a pretty fun intellectual challenge)

so you need to EXPLORE some more to find the monster with the right ability and defeat it

then you have to the challenging part of carrying that ability all the way back to the place where the puzzle is without losing your copy ability

I bet for you that sort of gameplay loop is tedious but I really liked it. Kirby is generally too easy and you can just float through the levels... but when I tried to 100% amazing mirror and Great Cave Offensive I developed a sense of mastery and familiarity with the world and I honestly didn't mind the backtracking at all.

Also have some fun music

There are 3 Kirby games that are crucial for his devolpment and growth but on their own fail to live up to its potential, only taken as a whole can you realize it:

>Dream Land 1 - The game that started it all and set the foundation with the level design, enemies, inhale and inflate abilities
>Adventure - Made the game longer with more meaty content, added abilities which became the staple
>Super Star - made the graphics better, improved the lore and made abilities have movesets

Each of them have critical flaws preventing them from being the ultimate Kirby game, and Kumazaki knew this. DL1 is a tiny monochrome game that can be beaten in 10 minutes. Adventure is a laggy and buggy ass game and the copy abilities either were always redundant with one another, or were too simple and not fun to use (Only having one command to utilize and not affording flexibility)
Super Star almost nailed it out of the park by finally rectifying all these problems BUT, Sakurai just FELT the need to not make 1 big coherent main campaign one could go through. He just HAD to chop it up into pieces mixed with subgames, which really brings the whole experience down. There really is no reason he couldnt have just made the whole game based on the Milky Wishes plot but with the level progression of Dyna Blade, with Meta Knights Revenge being a world, and so on. Because of this, the first TRULY realized Kirby title would not arrive until 2011, because NiDL, AM, Squeak Squad and KSSU sure as hell did not fit the criteria.

>> No.7329837

>>7328784
Why don't any of the games in the dark matter trilogy count as fully realized? I can't say anything for crystal shards or dreamland 2 (since I haven't played them yet) but dreamland 3 feels similar to modern Kirby games like star allies. It has a basic story, Co-op, collecting stuff, and the animal friends do enough to spice up the relatively basic copy abilities. isn't that everything you'd need for a fully realized Kirby game?

It's not like Sakurai's involvement matters since I was under the assumption he left halfway through the amazing mirror.

>> No.7330129

>>7321935
amazing mirror can be "difficult" because you lose your power extremely easily in that game, so getting the specific power you need to the specific part of the game you need can be somewhat challenging given that kirby can't block and all the powers are very limited

I love both to death

The reason Revenge of Meta Knight is great is because it is a power trip.
It's really really cool and cinematic at the beginning
It has awesome set-piece battles like the one where heavy lobster blows up half the ship
All of the meta-knights are freaking out because they're terrified of you
It ends with a bike chase off an exploding ship
And the whole thing is on a timer

I guess over the top spectacle isn't for everyone but I loved it

Not really. I enjoyed robobot after hacking my 3ds last year but the switch kirby game just looks mindnumbingly boring, I have the same problem as OP where there’s this cool underlying combat system but they do nothing with it. I’m not asking for kaizo kirby or anything actually I’d love that but I’m just not interested in playing the series unless the whole game feels like true arena. It’s not about muh hardcore gamer epeen points, I’d just get bored otherwise.

I’m in the minority though, I think. It’s Kirby, it’s for little kids and meant to be easy instead of having a hard mode that filters or upsets them. I’ve just outgrown it, better for me to move on than stick around and whine about them not making kirby for hardcore gamers.

What I don't get is why HAL forces you to play the game in baby mode to unlock the actual challenging stuff ever since RtDL. Not even KDL forced you to play the game for Extra mode if you knew the code. Just make it a code for people who don't want to be toddlered right off the bat. Problem solved.

I really wish the hard modes in early nintendo games had become a staying standard for the company. KDL 1, Zelda 1, SMB 1...okay so there werent that many games with this feature but still.

Admittedly the cost for this sort of thing has increased over time, but if they could fit them into the tiny memory spaces they had then they could surely rearrange the existing assets they have now.

>>7340935
CC was one of my favorite kirby games, when I was younger I think I 100%’d it, or got close. Actually had way more content than most mainline Kirby games do.

I didn’t play the wii u sequel but from what I’ve seen/heard it has the same issues all the post-RtDL games do. I did try the 3ds games and I liked robobot, at least.

Hey man/ma'am, if you like Kirby's Dream Course, I highly recommend emulating Special Tee Shot. If you don't know, it's the game Dream Course would've been before they added Kirby that eventually released on Satellaview. Don't be fooled though, it's not another Yume Kojo / Puyo Puyo job. It stands on its own merits and is basically a different game that just happens to have the same basic gameplay sans Copy Ability gimmick.
