just picked up a turbografx 16.

i'm way into shmups at the moment, so what are the best ones i can get on the tg16? i understand that the console has a plethora of the things, so i'm not sure where to begin.

>> No.730539

my favorites are blazing lazers of course, sidearms, raiden and rtype. those are good to start on, I dont really know what people think of sidearms but I really really like it. Other good ones are final soldier and super star soldier but those cost some hefty coin :(. Ive been playing turbo for 20 years and Ive never seen those games in real life either.

watching gameplay footage of sidearms, it's clearly a successor to section z, which is one of my favorite nes games.

are there any imports i should consider? also, any non shmups that you would recommend?

Turbo Everdrive is the best game for the TG-16, hands down.

I want a copy of Magical Chase more than anything, but it is as though the US version doesn't exist.

DUNGEON FUCKING EXPLORER.
I've beat that games so many times no deaths with my buddy we always tried to get our third friend to do a perfect run with us but he wasnt a god tier dungeon explorer.

they had that at the bookstore i got the tg16 at, but passed it up because i know nothing about it and the box art is super cheesy. i'll pick it up on my way to work tomorrow.

i'm not sure how i feel about these things. sure, it's as close as you can get to the "real thing," but it saps the fun out of actually collecting. at least for me.

IMO collecting for the TG-16 is a pain anyway unless you've got a big wallet.

I've seen maybe a handful of games in my city and only relatively common stuff like Bonk and China Warrior.

I've only ever seen three HuCards in my life, and I own one of the three I'd seen.

I would recommend modding your TG-16 so you can play japanese HuCards as well. The system was a lot more popular in Japan(as PC Engine) than in the west, beating even the Famicom for a while. Although the american TG-16 has a damn fine collection of games, many gems never crossed the pond.

If you ever get the CD add-on, it works with everything(even CD-Rs) if you have the required system card.(Super system card is pretty much mandatory) In fact, the PC Engine in Japan had more CD games than HuCard games.

and that one would be keith courage in alpha zones, am i right?

is that something you have done before? after a quick search, apparently buying an adapter for japanese hucards will cost me about as much as importing a new japanese pc engine, if not more. and it looks like actually modding the machine could be pretty difficult for someone who know little about such things. that is something i would be interested in, however.

Unfortunately it is a pretty advanced mod, and requires some precise soldering skills. Here is a guide:(on a PC Engine, but works the same on a TG-16)
http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/multi-region-pc-engine-turbo-grafx-16/

If you don't want to risk it, another option is getting a Core Grafx, an AV capable PC Engine which you can usually pick up for 50-60 bucks, or less if you play your Ebay cards right.

Wow, really? It's easily the best shmup on the vanilla TG16.

If you ever get tired of shmups and want to try a strategy game, pick up Military Madness/Nectaris.

This, then get Sapphire. One of the best damn shmups I ever played.

>> No.732581

>>732292
Unfortunately, Sapphire requires an Arcade Card Pro on non-Duo systems, plus the game itself is extremely expensive.(Earthbound complainers have nothing on this, over 400 bucks is the norm)

However, high-quality bootlegs were made in the early 2000s which go for about 60 bucks, which in this case I don't mind.

he could by himself one of those repro copys from Germany.

I own a legit sealed copy of Sapphire, so I bought the repro in order to play.

why the fuck wouldnt you just ruin your original? if you dont time will. I dont know why people are under the impression they will last forever, even with proper care they wont.

it will last long enough until I decide to sell it to some sealed collector.
