god I'm so fucking bad at finding secrets, is there a trick to it? I know it's apparently supposed to be when there's an unaligned bit of geometry or texture but I can never spot it
do I just wallhump or look it up?

>> No.7309539

>>7309529
It can be anything.
Usually there's some sort of clue, like you mentioned, misaligned or discoloured texture, could be vantage point to a location you haven't actually been able to get to during normal play (outdoors), could be obvious like an valuable item in plain sight but out of reach, or it could be an audio cue like triggering a line that sets off a door/lift in the distance. There's a bunch of stuff.

If you're having a hard time maybe look some up in the wads you're playing now, and then you'll sort of internalize some of the typical cues/hints mappers leave from your experience.

Also some of them are just bullshit lol

Do you doomers collect the different versions/revisions of IWADS/builds? I have a small collection amassed if anyone's interested. Still haven't got a few of them like the BFG edition IWADs, the ones from Doom Classic and the French version of Doom 2.

Pic related is what's in the archive. Link only lasts for 48 hours if anyone wants to mirror it or expand upon it:

I didn't see any of those in any of the links in the OP. That's why I posted what I have so far. I do own Doom 3 BFG Edition and the PSN collection but I'm currently just too lazy to redownload them to fish the IWADs out of them. I also don't have any of the IWADs for the other id Tech 1 games so I'll need to get started on that.

Half-Life in not the Citizen Kane of video games. On the contrary, it and it's boring linear narrative driven structure ended the era of FPS often referred to as the "Golden Era", widely considered to have began with the release of the Wolfenstein 3D shareware in 1992.

Typically nice to look at.
I have a better experience with tourism.pk3 playing them as walking simulators than actually trying to slog through them.

I understand the appeal of mass-enemy management and it's fun watching someone like decino play through some of those maps when his movement is so smooth and calm.

It's a shame that they seem to be the go-to enemy encounters for a lot of talented mappers, would love to see some of those people be reigned in by more progression-based traditional level design layouts.

of course the counter-point to this is that it's also a term used by tryhards who think that making through said part/mechanic makes them special regardless if it's poorly designed or legitimately difficult as a means to overcompensate for whatever shortcomings they have.

I think it could go without the two arch-viles at the start, since it forces you to wait below for them to appear so you can attack which is boring.

I think I found a really cool speedrun route, but it's luck dependant: you clear the start as usual, but when you press the first switch, you immediately run, grab the red key, activate the red switch, run to the blue key and get blasted out of the arena and grab the soulsphere. Maybe grab soulsphere first for more consistency. This should happen all within like 3 minutes, could be faster too since I cleared the start rather slow with the SSG, could clear start faster with rockets with more optimization. Because you didn't kill the starting pain elementals, the room fills will lost souls which is a disaster, and you have to run and grab the plasma gun then run and flip the blue switch (arch-vile spawns here). If you pull this off, the spiderdemon doesn't spawn, but the yellow key does, and you can grab it and flip the yellow switch. You can theoretically do all this back to back but you get blocked by stuff as you run so you gotta shoot. You get more plasma once you flip the blue switch so you can use the plasma rifle as soon as you get it

We really don't have any excuse though. /vr/ averages under 3 posts per min, our shitposting ratio is way too high given the relatively slow pace of the board, which indicates to me we have actual dedicated shitposting speds infesting the board.

Only that a straight port of the 3DO version was considered too simplistic for the time, so they aimed for something more complex. Regarding the digitized assets; there was some 3rd party involvement in producing these(but confusing enough not all, as seen with the cutscenes and ghost footage) and for whatever reason the contract did not cover another version of the game. Yeah, making games is a legal minefield it seems.

This is really stretching the definition, IMO. Granted, AA maps 28 and 29 definitely fits the bill (some may argue for 15, too), but the rest is not really slaughter at all, and is more just standard pwad gameplay with a couple arena encounters here and there. If that is all it takes to count as slaughter, then you might as well call Doom 2 map16 Suburbs slaughter.

Sandy consistently got the short end of the stick, Doom 1 was dropping so much mapping on him in no time at all and Doom 2 was mostly him doing his and Romero's work with American Mcgee doing some shit sometimes.

Tom Hall similarly had a pretty big impact on what Doom ended up like, having to fight John Carmack to get stuff like flying enemies and teleporters in the game.

Well, not necessarily, mind that the abstract levels were very much on Romero's initiative, and the reason BSP trees were implemented was because Romero busted the limits of the engine at the time when just experimenting (pic related). This had been in response to the pseudo-realism that Tom had aimed at, but I think Romero would likely have gone a very similar path anyway.

Romero, Tom, Sandy, Carmack, Adrian, Bobby, you could really not have replaced any of these guys with someone else and gotten even close to the same game we got. Even if Tom left during development and a lot of his ideas were binned, many of his significant ideas and contributions remained in one way or another (teleporters, flying monsters, probably the shotgun and super shotgun, likely the chainsaw as well, on top of some of his levels).
Romero had a lot of ideas overall for design and tone, as well as direction for overall level design, so he was irreplaceable as well, Carmack was the only way they'd get an engine like this in 1993, Adrian was the primary aesthetic drive and behind a lot of the monster design, not to mention the textures and sprites, Sandy for various ideas and inputs in design and gameplay on top of his levels, and Bobby, quite a lot like Adrian, was instrumental to the game's tone, as well as providing a few ideas here and there.

American? He contributed good levels, and probably some things for aesthetics and design, but he's more instrumental to Quake, Willits contributes ok levels but he's completely interchangeable with any average level designer. Shawn doesn't contribute a huge amount it seems on the surface, though likely he did influence tone, and according to people like Kvernmo, it's likely he was involved in a couple of more levels than he actually got credited for by Romero, ultimately however he's not one of the driving creative forces of Doom.

Reminds me of this Doom II review:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7xMiY44Xog
>Shooting, crazy jumping, constant explosions are becoming a part of our everyday life - novelty is wearing off. So we think in the nearest future we should expect a new genre emerging - so-called "social" games. Imagine - you come home, close the armored door, put machine gun back in the rack, take off your helmet and run back to your beloved PC. And here you will find a games like, for example, a "Streetcar" - calm winter afternoon, you and your girlfriend are riding a tram, trying your best to evade mellow ticket inspectors. Or maybe a game called "Household" - your wife is asleep in front of the TV, your mission is to feed your children and put them to sleep. Or a "Library" game, where you are looking for your favorite book on the shelves. And so you become immersed in a completely unrealistic, yet beatiful world

The nickname comes from him suggesting all that someone needs for home defense is a shotgun (mind, shotguns aren't actually bad, buckshot tends to kill the fuck out of people, even if they're high as fuck), which he then suggests you'd just fire up into the air and that would scare away anyone looking to hurt you.

I really want to stress, do NOT do this in an emergency (any kind of warning shot), it's unhelpful at best, and typically liable to get you into legal trouble. In the US anyway.

To this I have connected Plug'n'Pray campaign from ps1 version of the game, then custom map by William Gee named WGCity.

Now, I have discovered more sort of campaigns throughout some of the later released levels, so I'll start with Robert Travis' levels for Build games. It connects, in my opinion, to 2).

Beta One / Moonbase Beta -> Anselm -> Hoth -> Mountain Pass (from Cryptic Passage) -> Monastery (from Wanton Destruction)

Then, these levels from Maarten van Oostrum:
The Big City -> Maads -> The Toxicity -> Alien Planet X64-II -> Another Big Base Attacked.

Again, first batch of these levels sort of spins off of the Toxic Dump [beta] sequence, the second batch - from the end of the first batch.

MRCK's sort of mini campaign is comprised of these levels spinning off the end of Toxic Dump [beta] sequence of levels.

Anarchy City 1 -> Anarchy City 2 -> Anarchy City 3 -> Happy Hangover -> Anorak City -> Siebenopolis.

I still personally do largely prefer the Plug'n'Pray then WGCity branch, but that is simply my personal taste.

Also, considering Quake, Abandon -> VeniVidiFutzi by Madfox, as a whole, comprise a sort of an answer to Quake 1 taken as a whole, spinning off from it.

I kinda dislike that Eviternity went the extra mile to have most levels end with the beginning of the next level for a believable transition, but then with episode transitions, they just took the easy way out and slapped a portal at the end of every episode. Just makes each episode feel too disconnected from eachother.
And like, a portal to end an episode isn't even inherently a bad thing, either. BTSX E2 ends with a portal. But the difference is that BTSX builds up to the portal, making it feel significant and plot relevant. Where as the portal endings in Eviternity just feel generic and lazy.
I dunno, just a weird thing that bothers me.

AD is an attempt to divert attention from Abandon by playing an alternate supplant to Quake, now with bells and whistles. Veni is an alternate ending to Abandon since Witchcraft has ended up not tying it up entirely - it is a brilliant ending this time around as well.
Moreover, nowhere ever is Abandon simply stylized to fit Quake's mold, the author largely going on about doing his own business. It does not ever even hint upon restricting itself to be true to Quake, it would simply make its point moot. It isn't even stylized to fit dosQuake usermaps, actually requiring limit-expanding sourceports such as bjp WinQuake or Mark V WinQuake. It is simply doing stuff.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, not as an answer, a reminder that such a thing as ad_e1m3 / Giftmacher's The Sepulcher (not to be mixed with sock's ad_sepulcher / The Forgotten Sepulcher) does exist.

My answer to Blood 1 is as follows.
I set whether my concurrent version of what transpires holds. The defi-nition of PSEUDOHALLUCINATION holds upon the definition of SEEMINGNESS, the divide between HALLUCINATION and PSEUDOHALLUCINATION ultimately strays from whatever classification of interpretation applied, thence carries nature external to the issue at hand.
I happen as a hypothetical fancy a thought le game is a crud. Suppose I say probably something's in my eye, again and again and again, game is still vomit. Thence might it happen I have imagined the possibility of imagining something?

E3 is more varied in difficulty, but I'd mostly point this to the fact that it has a lot of guest mappers. And I'd only really say Joshy's Map28 felt like a massive spike to me. Of skillsaw's maps, 27 definitely felt a bit on the easy side compared to most of his other middle and later maps, that's true, but it only really sticks out because of the aforementioned Map28 that comes straight after.

Now that I do think about it, you could do parts of it with Boom. If you use the recent versions/forks of PrBoom+, you could also make use of the UMAPINFO and extended DEHACKED as well, and converted to the right format you could use .mp3s of the PSX soundtrack.
PrBoom+ will also allow you to use the replicated burning sky effect as your sky with the sky transfer special.

You'd lack the audio reverb, and the colored sector lighting would be off, but other than that you could probably make it reasonably close. I encourage you to go through with this just for the fun of it.

The entire point with UMAPINFO and extended DeHacked is to add practical utilities to PrBoom+ and Crispy Doom without in any way impacting demo compatibility.
UMAPINFO will be very popular with Boom mappers for the basic conveniences it'll afford them, without affecting gameplay or demo compat.

I wouldn't suggest it. While in Doom all the official levels are balanced for pistol start, and outside of very rare exceptions, all pwad levels are also balanced for pistol start, with Quake, the stock levels are NOT balanced with shotgun start in mind, you are given new weapons as the episode progresses, and if you didn't get X weapon in Y previous map, you usually will not have a new chance to get it after that.

You could try shotgun starting Quake, but it will not be easy at all.

UMAPINFO doesn't affect the PRNG, you fucking doublenigger, so it will not desync on that point, but what it does affect is map order, and things like 666/667 specials, as well as if a level allows the player to be telefragged.
Now, where would these things be relevant? It wouldn't be in any demo recorded in a levelset where this isn't changed, a Doom 2 demo will record and run as normal in its given complevel, regardless of if it's being recorded in an older version of PrBoom+ or in DSDA (which supports UMAPINFO).
If a demo is recorded for a mapset which uses UMAPINFO, that would be preciously irrelevant to an older port where such a mapset wouldn't run anyway.

The ONLY way which UMAPINFO would desync an old demo would be if you for *completely inexplicable reasons* loaded a UMAPINFO lump that changed the level order/specials when playing up an old multi-level demo, which is on the same level as stapling your ballsack to your inner thigh and then complaining to Office Depot that you're walking funny.

You don't have a valid excuse to be this inexplicably retarded.

But I personally think BTSX has been even more impressive with its ambitions towards Vanilla engine mapping, and I think the gameplay is even more consistently solid and well balanced compared to AV.
I still have much respect for AV, though, as its overall scope has been a major inspiration towards many Megawads since, and I still gladly put it among my top wads.

Not that anon but its still weird.

I was poor as fuck 15 years ago and I still managed to get some money for some 8GB, whiskey and chocolate.

Yeah, when i bought this system in 2008 it was already a medium build, bit outdated (Q8200, GTX 260, 4GB RAM).

However updated in recent years to a Q9650 (max supported by this motherboard) and a GTX 750 Ti, still more than good enough for the old games that i play.

I've been thinking about extending my episode replacement megawad into a full 32-map megawad but I'm having some trouble trying to extend the "story" within it. Should I chop up some of the massive levels into smaller levels or should I leave them as is and try to think of levels to put in between them?

True I actually still have a similar pc for backup gathering dust, it also has a 750ti because the old radeon melted and 8gb. The motherboard is weird it always seemed on the verge of death but never gave up.

I started acting weird when I used 6gb plus memory.

Motherboards are actually very longlasting in my experience. However mine (MSI small form factor) already kind of died a little; 3 of the 4 SATA ports running my HDD failed one by one, i'm now using the last remaining SATA port. Other than that still going strong. Don't throw away that PC collecting dust, it will be worth money in the future..

well think on what you already have.
megawads are a bit much to get through, if you have to make filler content just to hit that magical 32-map size, whats the point?
you can go route of Scythe and make smaller, bite-size maps if you insist on splitting, or you could just have one coherent episode.

Maybe. Its really banged up but I have fond memories of playing with friends in it.

I just ripped open one of the doors, the pc fan died so I had to rig a regular fan suspended by some rubber bands and and old gigantic copper that belonged to a friend of mine. no fan sucking air out only two directly onto the processor, but it never struggles even in summer.

I also had a usb fan to help the graphic card. It has a zombie 37 gb SSD with windows 7 and a regular 512 gb for stuff.

I am honestly surprised by how many modern games it could play at 720p.
