'Gears' in that setting are biomechanical beings; essentially like people made of nanomachines. Sol Badguy (the dude in red there) was once a dude named Frederick who helped pioneer the creation of gears, and made himself into one at one point. He feels guilt over the creation of gears because they led to worldwide conflict that nearly destroyed humanity and continues to threaten it.

Guilty Gear is called such because it is referring to Sol, the guilty gear.

Yeah, they only lightly get into his background in X (I don't even think they drop the Frederick name by then; it's another blatant Queen reference lol). Up until X2, all the games reveal about him is that he IS in fact a gear, which brings his motives into question since he hunts them. The later titles basically get into the idea that he's trying to fix what he considers his own mistakes by killing the fucked up ones (like Justice) and keeping an eye on the ones that could possibly live alongside humans (like Dizzy).

That said, this is a plot for a fighting game, so like whatever.

Admittedly one of the more interesting ones. You could make a drinking game out of the metal references in this series. I heard it's all the result of the director Daisuke Ishiwatari having that full creative freedom.
