is it me or is the Genesis a better multiplayer console than the SNES?

>> No.7313542

>>7313536
No, it's you. And I'm a Sega fanboi. But the mere fact that Street Fighter II was unplayable on the Genesis unless you had two 6-button controllers (no one had two) seals the deal.

Because it's impossible to just buy two controllers. What difference does it make whether you had two controllers as a kid(and yes, some people did)?

You are absolutely correct, it's not just you.
You may also omit the "multiplayer" in that statement.
And it's not even close.

Most people had two controllers, but these were three-button controllers. Thus SF2 was a nightmare to play.

The only Genesis game where we had a legendary time with the bros was Micro Machines 2 with the based controller ports on the cartridge, so 4 players could play simultaneously. That and the Mortal Kombat ports with blood.

Meanwhile, the best multiplayer games were on the SNES. Just think about Street Fighter, DBZ, Mario Kart, Street Racer, Killer Instinct, etc.

Only if you're beyond dirt poor.

Once you got the 6 button controllers Genesis version was superior

You didn't play this in the 90s unless you're some frenchfag. And the 16 bit DBZ sucked dick anyways

Genesis was superior for sports games without question. All the big EA titles were much better, and even games like Tecmo Super Bowl, and NBA JAM were better on Sega. Though it could be a toss up for fighters.
Other genres I would also say Sega was better at. Golden Axe, Road Rash, Streets of Rage, Toejam and Earl,Ginstar Heroes are better than what ever SNES counterparts there might be. While no slouch in these categories the SNES is outclassed by Genesis.

Even there, Mega Drive has pic related, Shining Force, Pier Solar, Surging Aura, not to mention a glut of strategy and CRPG games such as Pirates! Gold, Dune, Herzog Zwei, all surpassing the quality and depth of gameplay and presentation offered by anything on the SNES.
So what exactly is the SNES supposed to be so good at again?

You're showing your underage. The 6 button controllers were less common, so unless you had two of them yourself and remembered to bring them both with you to your friends' house to play, you were at the mercy of whether or not their parents bought them even one.

Are you a zoomer? The three buttons were all punches. You had to press start, and then the three buttons became kicks. Press start again to revert to punches. Yeah, that meant you couldn't pause the game either with a three-button controller. See the problem now?

>> No.7314482

No one cares about DBZ or Street Racer. And Street Fighter 2 was on the Genesis too. Not to say that the SNES had nothing going for it, but you're making really bad arguments. Especially the one about people not having enough six button controllers. If someone owned two six button controllers, then your entire narrative falls apart. Your argument ends up coming down to "my dad didn't buy me an extra six button controller, therefore the console is bad".

Besides, what are we judging -- whether you enjoyed the console more as a child, or whether you enjoy it more as an adult? Because at the time, Super Mario Kart was a good game, but it's unplayable now given the much superior sequels. Contrast that with ToeJam and Earl, a game that still holds up.

>Street Fighter 2 was on the Genesis too
Yeah, 15 fucking months after the first SNES game, 15 months where I had to visit my SNES-owning friends every weekend to have some Ryu action while I was stuck with old beat'em alls on my Genesis.

And when SF2' finally landed on Genesis, not only the game was crazy expensive ($75, which would be $135 in 2021 dollars) but you also had to buy a dedicated 6-button controller (or two, according to 4chan). All that was more expensive that the Genesis itself, which costed $100.

So: owning a Genesis was being fucking late to the party, shelling out a ton of extra money (for a 10-year-old), and all that with a maximum 61 colors.

Not the better multiplayer console.

I barely ever played MP games back in the day, nor did I have a Genesis, but let's see...

SNES has Jurassic Park II, Wild Guns, Mario Kart, Gundam Wing Endless Dual, Final Fight 3, Sailor Moon Fuwa Fuwa Panic.

Genesis has Gunstar Heroes, Golden Axe. SoR is better in the remake. I can't think of anything else I've played that's 2 player.

Other stuff I can think of is on both systems more or less. TMNT IV is sorta on Genesis, but I never tried that version. MK II should be the same on both.

Someone with knowledge of puzzle games or wrestling games should weigh in, because I know SNES has a bunch of weird Japanese puzzle games, but I think some of those are on Genesis, too. SNES has Fire Pro games, but that's all I know of wrestling.

>> No.7316004

I remembered SNES has Seiken Densutsu 3, which has a hack that adds 3 player mp. Sword of Mana had 3 player mp right out of the box. The first Tales game might have had mp battles, I'm not sure.
