Has anyone gotten the PS2 to play games from a USB drive yet?

Yes but its shit because USB 1.0 has to slow a transfer rate to be actually enjoyable (especially in games with dynamic loading).

You can do that but nobody does because it fucking sucks
Get a fat PS2, a freemcboot memory card, a network adapter, and a hard drive

>> No.7313132

Play games over Sambda server. Works on PS2 slim or PS2 fat. If you have a fat you can also load up an HDD, but unless you want to use an IDE drive (old format, low space, you probably don't have a pc connector laying around) you'll want to modify your network adapter to connect to SATA drives. Not hard to do, or you can buy one pre-modded, or you can skip the network part and get a SATA adatper, but those are unreliable. If you're going the with a SMB server its easy to add games, just put .iso files into a directory on your PC, change some settings, and plug in an ethernet. Games load fsster than on disc in my experience. You just need a memory card with McBoot on it (you can buy this for like 10 bucks) or if you have a DVD burner and your PS2 dvd drive is a blessed version, just burn a single DVD with FreeDVDBoot and launch .elf files (like OPL) from USB. I just set all this up like 3 days ago so it is fresh in my mind. Let me know if you have any questions.

USB1 is too slow for jack shit. The solutions for PS2 are fat model with a big hard drive, SMB (though i could never figure out how to make this work honestly), or simply replacing your disc drive laser if/when it dies. Replacement lasers are cheap and the install is relatively simple, no soldering required.

This, but beware that it's not perfect. On a few different network setups I get the occasional hitch in dynamic games, but it's a ton better than USB.

It takes some general knowledge and SMB is a janky protocol anyway, but it works nicely enough. Just gotta triple check your IPs, share names, and share permissions. I've found that a direct ethernet connection between two machines is best. I only recently discovered that you can do this with any ethernet cord, not just crossover.

It's not going to be a plug and play solution. How many times to we have to go over this? not even the best minds in the modding community can make something for the ps2 that it retard proof plug and play. It's just not going to happen given the complexity of the hardware.

i have a fat model with a network adapter (you'll want an official one if you want to FTP the games over) + an adapter to covert it to sata and a 500gb drive i had lying around.

then you just copy the FHDB image to the HDD and you're essentially done other than additional programs (like HDLgameinstaller) and games.

as far as getting games onto it the easiest way is network transfer. i couldn't get ulaunchelf or HDLdump to copy games but HDLGameInstaller works perfectly so i recommend that.

otherwise you can manually install them by plugging the drive into the computer.

Nice PS1 emulation son, and not all PS2 games are compatible.

The "easiest" ps2 chip is still about 100x more of a pain in the ass to do than just running FMCB and runs the risk of trashing your console. Lasers being replacable or not, optical media is unreliable as fuck and you inevitably end up with coasters and a book full of sharpied plastic. In game reset alone makes OPL such a nicer experience

Early PS2's can also use the Firewire 400 port to get 6mb/s from external storage.

It's pointless though since the only PS2's with the iLink port also have the HDD bay.

>> No.7320475

Little known fact but most slim PS2s (specifically the SCPH-75000 models onward) have much better performance when playing games from USB than earlier consoles.
This is because these consoles replace the older IOP chip with a new DECKARD chip which is significantly faster but also bugger due to being partially emulated.
Games which gave me loading speed trouble on my fat PS2 with USB were nearly flawless on my slim PS2.
Presumably this performance increase also applies to playing games with SMB, although I haven't personally tested it.

Does POPSTARTER work differently over SMB vs. on HDD/USB? I haven't noticed any differences. Its much easy to put PS1 .VCDs into my PS2SMB folder on my PC and not having to transfer anything. And what compatibility issues are there with SMB vs HDD? AFAIK they are pretty much the same.
