It's entirely a cult. Anyone with any sense knows that Nintendo has never produced any console worth playing when compared to it's contemporaries. Their shit games and shit hardware are entirely comparable to Apple, literally one-upped in every way, in every instance, yet somehow, still clung onto by bitter, unsatisfied, and deluded nintendrones. For decades, mainstream gaming journalism went along with it, Nintendo consoles were propped up as "right alongside the best", Nintendo games were given pity wins in top lists of best games, but finally, more and more are waking up to the truth, and becoming unashamed to admit, that Nintendo is, and always has been, utter shit, and I, for one, could not be more pleased.

Nintendo was never good after SNES. Every single console of theirs since N64 is a what-the-fuck-on-wheels compared to the competition. It's a miracle they survived between Sony and Microsoft these days. Back in the early nineties they had solid fanbase and most of devs making games for their hardware. After SNES it's just bing bing wahoo söyboys with Rare and the N themselves making games while every other company preferred to work for the competition.

Nintendo has been the laughingstock of the industry since the SNES, and even there, the SNES and NES were not actually good or influential, they were far too hampered by crippling limitations when compared to the competition to actually produce the games developers wanted to create, hence the exodus of developers from Nintendo platforms in the early 1990s.

Over 90% of commercially released NES games had to rely on expensive cheating expansion chips to match the stock capabilities of other 8-bit consoles and computers.
The SNES, despite being 2 years newer than the Mega Drive, ran at a mere 1/3rd the speed of all it's competitors.
The N64, despite being 2 years newer than the Playstation, has less than 10 games that run at 60 FPS.

And yet everything else was vastly superior to the Mega Drive stats wise. Cheaping out on a processor is an odd choice, but in the end it didn't really matter because while it may not have had the crazy fastpaced action games of Mega, it made up for it with an increased amount of RPG and strategy games.
