It was actually released after The End of Evangelion (otherwise, they wouldn't have come up with the Missions 12 and 13, rigght?), the game was released in 1999 and the movie in 1998.

The difference in the ending is that Shinji does not choke Asuka in the beach, rather they hold hands and Asuka kind of smiles to Shinji, so it's a happy ending, kind of.

And of course the final battle of Shinji against the Eva series, which also never actually happens in the movie, Shinji just freaks out while the Eva series easily crucify him. That's another reason why I like this game, you can beat their asses with the awakened Eva-01.

That's mostly correct, except the really bad part of it now is 3.33 (released last year), in the ending of 2.22, Shinji causes a near 3I just to save Rei from an angel. Kaworu comes from the moon to halt it.
In 3.33, 14 years have passes, Shinji is awoken from Eva-01, some kind of stasis, the world is all red and read, Misato is now the captain of a floating battleship made from an angel's skeleton with the purpose of destroying Gendo and NERV (which is now staffed only by him, Fuyutsuki, a soulless clone of Rei and gay pianoman Kaworu), Asuka and Mari haven't aged, Mari is still useless, and Shinji acts retarded.

Back in 1998/1999, when I finished watching the series, I wanted to see EoE badly, but back then the movie just wasn't edited anywhere else other than in Japan, so I had to wait for a fansubbed VHS with bad quality to see it in early 1999. before that, I got the OST CD because I wanted to at least experience SOMETHING about EoE. The OST came with a booklet full of pictures, so I saw the mass produced Evas, giant Rei and Shinji choking Asuka, and many more images from the movie... my mind was still fucked pretty hard when I watched the movie, so don't worry, you'll be good.

Rebuild is great. The animation is fucking incredible, the story is less clunky and better explained, a lot of the needless bullshit got cut to help streamline it and the action sequences are top notch.

The first one is literally just the first few episodes reanimated, the second one starts to drift off into its own story but still parallels the original, and the third one takes a totally new direction that was hit or miss with the fans. I personally enjoyed all three a lot, but purists won't be happy with it. And the love triangle shit isn't nearly as bad or prominent as you made it out to be (I'd actually say 2.22 is the best of the 3 films thus far).

It's worth a watch for anyone who sat through the original, at least.

>> No.731375

>>731356

No, but battles have different outcomes depending on how you do. You can beat Sachiel without going Berserk.

Are you reading a guide on how the controls work? You can break the angel's AT Firled (get close to it and when their AT Field appears, release yours immediately (C-down), if you are close enough and the timing is right, and animation showing Eva-01 trying to rip the angel's AT Field start. You have to alternately press the A and C-down buttons, not too fast, not too slow, if you do it right the angel's AT Field will be broken, then you can beat him more easily.

A lot of the commands you can do depend on your synchro rate, if it's higher than 100%, you can press up+A and Eva-01 will kick Sachiel away. Otherwise rapidly press A 3 or more times and you will punch and kick the angel.
When the angel is kicked away, you'll get to a closeup of Eva-01, and a sign saying "ANGEL >>" (showing the direction the angel is) will appear. Press R+control stick left and Eva-01 will start running. At one point you will see the eva's eyes shinning, right in that momment you can enter a command, which can be A, A+B, Up+A, holding UP then A, and more. Again, depending on your synchro, different attacks will trigger.

Hope it helps.

Anyway going Berserk is also fine, the Eva automatically rips Sachiel's AT Field and the synchro ratio is high always.

That...sounds totally fucking bonkers. Now I guess I have to see the thing myself.

Still, something I really kind of liked about the original series is that it started off as a run of the mill mech anime but then started pulling the rug out. Things stopped resolving in a neat and tidy fashion and things seemed to get worse instead of better, culminating in shit finally going bonkers in EoE.

Reading spoilers for Rebuild episodes 2 and 3 (I saw 1 way back when) almost reads like fanfiction...especially 3, which seems to come out of left fucking field. It could be good, but would people actually think anything of it if it wasn't called Evangelion?

>Reading spoilers for Rebuild episodes 2 and 3 (I saw 1 way back when) almost reads like fanfiction...especially 3, which seems to come out of left fucking field.
It gives this impression because 1) you're reading spoilers and not seeing the full evolution to get from point A to point B and 2) because you may be thinking with the original's scenario as a frame of reference.

>It could be good, but would people actually think anything of it if it wasn't called Evangelion?
Yes.
It's kinda hard to imagine "It would be Evangelion but without being called Evangelion", but still, if you're in it for the robots, you're doing it wrong. NGE has always been about character development and relationships.

It hits even harder in Rebuild 3 because there are no more relationships: the hero (our point of reference) has been put away for 14 years, he comes back and all the old gang gives him (us) the cold shoulder, refuse to tell him (us) what happened,... When he finally find someone willing to tell him (us) what happened, he finally got a shoulder to cry on. This is great storytelling because of all the different reactions to Shinji all relating to the viewer.

Seriously, the Rebuild experience may seem far-fetched, the story may sound like fanfiction,... Still, you got one of the best animated features of the last five years and the people behind it are REALLY over-thinking it.

I won't post examples, just go to evageeks.org: some places are more autistic than /vr/ ;)

He probably means 2nd Impression, which is also a visual novel much like Girlfriend of Steel, but there's a new girl character there with glasses (and she's an angel). For some reason it wasn't as popular as GoS, probably because the voice actress for Mana was Megumi Hayashibara and that alone made her more popular than the other girl.
I think there is another 2nd Impression game on Saturn, then some mahjong "shinji and friends" also released for PC in Japan, and some "gallery" discs... but the best known game of Eva for Saturn is 2nd Impression.

I actually owned this back in ye day when the N64 was current hardware. Got it from an import shop with a converter and I plan on someday readding it to my collection.

It was neat, if odd. Not really a game, it's more of a "Show Simulator". The game slavishly follows the exact events of the show, and because the show didn't really have a BIG PUNCHY FIGHT every episode but usually had very specficic operations where the Evangelion only did one thing, the game is pretty much a minigame collection. There's lock-on-and-fire bits, Dance if you want to Win is a timed buttonpress thing that's almost like a rhythm game.

It's definitely only for fans, but it's neat.

Also they for some reason couldn't quite accurately record the evangelion roaring so in this game when Unit 01 goes berserk it lets out this kinda uhhhh...howling/mooing noise that's so weird it's almost disturbing in its own right

Did you check the sound test? (which is also great too, with the SEELE "Sound Only" monoliths) In the voice sound test (which has over 300 voice clips), one of the last one sounds like a woman growling... I haven't heard it on the game I don't think... so I was thinking MAYBE it's Megumi Hayashibara? Remember she recorded the Eva-01's voice... it's probably manipulated so that it sounds like a beast and not a cute girl, but I think in this game it's possible to hear her growling, weird and nice.

And yeah the game is full of detail, it only lacks in the gameplay department, because as you said it's pretty hard to make a accurrate version of the series in videogame form, the battles aren't all that action-packed in the series, but all the detail put into everything else (Eva models, the original voice actors recording specifically for this game, the different kind of animations depending on how you perform in each level, etc). It's really a treat for any fan of Evangelion.

Jealous? now I don't know if you're trying to troll or shitpost or what... but when or how did I imply people don't like my opinions because they are "jealous"?
I genuinely ask myself how can anybody enjoy this game in any shape or form, but I guess some of you aren't willing to answer that because apparently I'm a troll and a shitposter.

Has anyone played any of the Evangelion VNs?
Were they good?

>Evangelion licensed videogame
>Good

Evangelion visual novels feel like fanfiction (bad one at that), so if you're into that sorta stuff check them out. They don't add anything to the original plot other than teeny bopper romantic (and hysterical) pandering.

Shinji Ikari Rising Project is famously pretty good, apparently there's schedule management like Princess Maker, which was also designed by Gainax.
I never played it as there's no english Patch, though.

Your general consensus is that they all suck. We don't need individual posts about it.

But I can explain why they suck in detail, at least the ones I've played.

It's an historical game for NGE fans.
If you're not one of the original NGE fans you can skip it, it's completely meaningless to you.

I've been an Evangelion fan since mid '98 and this game is absolutelt meaningless to me.
Do I need to be an even older fan to appreciate it or what?

Yeah, I remember reading about it on anime & manga magazines at the time (1999), some of them came with CD-ROMs with video clips and music and galleries, and one of them had some realtime videos of Evangelion 64, my dick couldn't get any harder.
The only store in my country selling the game (a store owned by a japanese guy) had it for U$S300.

one of the best 60 quid import's I got back in the day, a good many years back now the 64 was still in full swing back then.

I admit I used the code to unlock everything in it after spending some time trying to do it the honest way but in the scheme of things as long as I got to play it who really cares eh

Nice hidden 2 player mode as well, assuming you had someone to play it with, though using the Lance did feel a bit cheap in that mode

How do you even activate the 2 player mode using the actual cart? I remember reading something on some site about doing whatever command with the 2nd controller, or something like that, but never worked for me. I just thought the only way to get access to it was through ROM hacking.

I recall it being slightly tricky the first time but it soon becomes easier, gamefaqs has the info for accessing them yes here http://www.gamefaqs.com/n64/198127-neon-genesis-evangelion/cheats theres 2 of them, the mission 11 one makes p1 always Unit 1 the other mode lets you choose
