Nowadays because of the second stick, the only realistic way to make 4 buttons would be going the other way. 2 lines of 3 going from bottom right to top left. Like pic related. And even that might cause problems because of the way gamepads are designed. I've taken apart Xbox controllers and there's a peg that goes down from the inner side of each bumper to hit the button that activates it. Putting a button in the way would get in the way of that.

Honestly, a better solution would be handgrip buttons or paddles. Tons of "specialty" controllers have them like Steam controller, Scuf, and Xbox Elite, and everyone that's used them seems to think they're great, yet for some reason Microsoft and Sony refuse to add them to the standard versions of their controllers.
