Just found that thread. They seem to be implying that the only reason Doom even still has a community is because of all the source ports and what you can do with them, and not for Doom itself. That when Duke 3D and Quake came out, Doom was already forgotten. They seem to be painfully unaware that Doom actually still had a big community between the releases of Duke 3D and the source code release almost two years later. And that even today, plenty of vanilla mapsets that are essentially the same mechanics as the iwads still get made.

I get that most of ttlg is people more into story-rich immersive sim games, so stuff like Doom might not be appealing to them, but come the fuck on.

I just finished Unreal for the first time. The guns and enemy types are really fun and the AI is great. The level design is semi-cryptic but not in an insurmountable amount. But I really had a hard time trying to keep going, because there didn't seem to be a point to anything. 849 just wakes up, starts shooting and there is no motivation for anything she does. It's not like Metroid where Samus has a mission. Hell, even in Doom the Doomguy slowly figures out that he's supposed to kill the mastermind of the invasion to stop it. 849 seems to just go around autistically blowing shit up in order to access the next area to destroy stuff in.
