Drakengard’s final, FINAL boss... I got to the point where I was savestating any fucking moment I could after spending an entire night trying to beat it. It obviously isn't the same using save states, but I went through hell in the 90s with these games so I don't feel any guilt for using them now. I don't abuse it either. I will go through a hard section but I will save afterwards if they want to throw multiple in a row at you before you reach a checkpoint.

Remember, these games were meant to give you a game over until you played it over and over until beating it.

If someone wants to say "you didn't really beat it', I'd agree. That's fine. I just want to see it through and experience it.

I would make a save state at the beginning of every level in Super Ghosts n Goblins which I would load whenever a weapon appeared and I was knocked into it by an enemy, thus losing the Goddess Bracelet. I can't be assed to try to hunt for chests each and every time a weapon gets dropped onto me by an enemy with a pot. Scummy, I know, but it did force me to redo entire levels once or twice, so I don't feel too bad. I love that game.

As I get older I just want to play some games I was never able to afford as a child. I never used the regular saves in Final Fantasy games because it was easier to hit F5 or F2.
So in Final Fantasy 4 there's a part where you escape a burning castle and you're on a timer. The enemies were easy so I was grinding them and using the speedup in an emulator as well. I saved with 12 seconds left and went to leave but there was a mini-boss fight scripted when you cross a certain line. i started looking into older consoles around 2005, before AVGN really made it big and the hipster retro craze started, around that time you could buy a genesis, nes or snes with two or three dozen games included on a big box for under 50$, it was dirt cheap, probably because all those kids who owned originally were going to college debt or getting into drugs, psx and n64 being slightly more expensive than that.

Hell, 20$ and you'd get a NES with all the essentials on it, Castlevania, Zelda, Mario, duck hunt you name it.

The increased difficulty and harsh punishment for losing all lives on early NES games was to suck away time though. It was a symptom of the arcade mentality existing in developer's minds. Pause, count the order, practice a couple times, unpause, hammer out what you saw, and then pause again. Once you're at the end it takes almost exactly that amount of time for the new ones to arrive, if not even a little faster. It features the cardinal sin of being super easy till the last 30 seconds, in which case it becomes ludicrously hard. Can't stand that sort of stuff, so fuck it.

38 here. I learnt discipline from pc games having quick save/load; same principle. Over use it and you’re ruining the pace of the game and never getting any better at it. Games aren’t that hard on the whole. Mind you, I don’t have the time dedicate to them anymore. I get the whole “you didn’t truly beat it” but some games either aren’t worth going back and trying again legit or simply don’t require you to - something heavily story focused for example.
