I'm 30 and this game scared the shit out of me as a kid. No other N64 game caused this. Not sure what it is exactly but there's clearly something about it that unsettles people.

What scared me most is something I never see anyone mention. In DDD there's this large black hole underwater. I would always angle the camera away from it because it terrified me. To this day I have a legit fear of dark water and it started here.

I have never understood what was so scary about Super Mario 64. I remember back in the day being only unsettled by the eel and the ghost piano. The atmosphere of the game is pretty happy.

Yes, the game had some of the "early CGI" weirdness in it, but the amazement and the joy of playing those 3D open stages around 1996/1997 was just too much to discard any other negative feelings.

Some of them probably grew up reading autistic creepypastas about old games (which came out before they were born and to which they likely had zero personal exposure to) as legitimate scary stories, so it isn't too surprising. I guess blame autistic millenials for creating the creepypasta culture that impacted impressionable zoomer tweens.

a composite signal causes this murkiness. You can really see it in Mario's face next to his lives. RGB modding, or Ultra 64 modding your console lose this affect. Ofc, that's not how we played it when we were kids, and I do have a soft spot for the N64's creepy/murky aesthetic.

Or just as likely they never planned anything special at all and at some point decided that the crest thing looked bland so they replaced it with the stained glass, and the apparent space between the windows is just them being sloppy with the continuity of the external/internal geometry of the castle, either due to oversight or just focusing more on what looked good for each specific location and less on what made for good continuity.

>No other N64 game caused this. Not sure what it is exactly but there's clearly something about it that unsettles people

It's simple, it's the lack of plot, context, and atmpsphere.

Mario is effectively a mute protagonist, alone in a world that is mysterious/hostile. The dissapearing Toads only add to the sense of isolation. Compare to Zelda or Banjo Kazooie, games with more involved stories and constant plot reminders. And more characters to interact with.

Everything in SM64 feels disjointed, least of all from how you enter worlds. Also it was Nintendo's first major game for the N64. There is something experimental about it

>> No.7300289

How was this any different then mario 1-4? Everyone besides mario is hostile. I was actually alive and playing when it first came out and everyone thought it was a bright and colourful fun mario game. All these explanations about why its creepy is zoomer larping. Literally nobody felt this way.

Maybe thats the point, ape. I played this on an emulator as a child. Now it feels eerie. Another anon summised it perfectly IMO; the lack of a plot/pretty much anything to reinforce your goal leads to a feeling of ambiguous spookiness. The halls are silent.

The real question is wtf is up with WDW? I know it's a meme but look at most other levels, it's grassy plains. Fair enough. A snowy mountain? Fair enough. A floating fortress? Yeah not as strong but stil I get what it IS.

What the fuck is WDW even supposed to be? There is no IRL counterpart, it's just a box filled with blocks and cylinders, with a drowned city attached through a pipeline. What the fudge is this trying to be?

>> No.7300603

>>7300289
I grew up with N64 and Super Mario 64 was the first game for a console I ever played. So obviously I'm not "creepy Zoomer LARPing"

Super Mario 64's atmosphere is not identical to the first 3 games and World. Playing it more recently as an adult I geniunely find it to have a mysterious presence and atmopshere. I do not think it's scary or creepy nor did I say as much. Boo's Haunted Castle is actually one of the more comic stages. It's the underwater stages and Wet-Dry World that have the desolate ambience and feelings I'm talking about. Clearly people's feelings on the game come from somewhere because it's simply not identical in tone to earlier Mario games. As mentioned by many previously in thd thread, being 3D and the first 3D Mario game at that gives it unique qualities. No previous Mario game had the effect with the music, environments and world building it did, and no game since feels quite the same. You can listen to any number of music tracks from the game to immediately confirm as much.

Its literally just the music. The weird panflute and synthesized instruments give an eerie ethereal feeling compared to the more classical compositions from the previous games. Put SMW athletic theme over any SM64 map and youd get the old mario feeling again.

The questions about the commercial are dumb tho. The BG was probably changed in development, with the commercial using an old build. Or they refused to air the copyrighted image and put in a replacement. Further, it's trivial to get to Wet Dry World with only 37 stars. You only need 31 - 30 to open the basement Bowser door and 1 more to get the Docks warp out of the way. That gets you the upper key and WDW is out in the open once you're upstairs.

>I have never understood what was so scary about Super Mario 64. I remember back in the day being only unsettled by the eel and the ghost piano. The atmosphere of the game is pretty happy.
It's because people on the internet like taking stuff that's generally pretty void of unsettling things and trying to twist it into something creepy/unsettling, or add something that is. Because, you know, wouldn't it be more interesting if this completely harmless game actually had creepy, scary stuff going on in the background? All my quirky indie games do it, it's so cool!

I'd only consider it mildly unsettling and that's because the low-poly nature of the game makes it appear a bit empty or lonely, and there's some weird textures or enemies because of the early CGI look. Wouldn't consider it creepy because most of the weird stuff like the secret passages or the ghost house miniature are more like the typical odd but happy childhood fantasies.
