Well, OP asked for the superior version; having to play it as a fan-made-patched rom through emulation or a repro cart sort of makes its claim at the title a bit shaky.

Btw, though not many people realize it, the rom patch is actually an overfix. The brick "physics" applied are actually the ones from The Lost Levels, which are slightly different in certain situations.

I'd play this. The only reason to play the originals is the physics working correctly, because the SNES renditions DO look better and the edges of the screen in SMB3 will never not look fucked up on NES due to the scrolling method the game uses (which is a sacrifice it makes to also scroll vertically, so it's not fixable and was legitimately the best that could be done on the system).

The physics being wrong is the entire dealbreaker in All Stars.

SNES version has broken block physics, and the soundtrack remakes aren't particularly good. In fact, they're pretty weak. The overworld music has the main melody an octave lower which makes it sound much weaker (and makes the rhythm no longer driving to the same degree), changes the underground music to be identical to the SMB3 version instead of the original odd time signature version, and the remade castle music is just bad. And then on top of that Mario's sprite looks like a modern 16-bit version, only they kept his "old" palette...which just makes it all look wrong.

SMB3 is also pretty weak on SNES.

>And then on top of that Mario's sprite looks like a modern 16-bit version, only they kept his "old" palette...which just makes it all look wrong.
I've always found this to be weird as shit, but I appreciate the fact that they stuck to the original sprite "colors" because it shows reverence towards the original graphic design. Something a lot of remakes don't have, including later Mario ones.

The soundtrack in All-Stars has problems but it's mostly based in the Starman and Underwater tracks being grating to listen to thanks to their changes. The Underground theme may be based on the wrong one but it sounds fucking great with perfect use of the soundfont. The Overworld theme is still excellent, it just goes lowkey at points which the original avoids. No clue at all what you're complaining about with the Castle music, it's ominous and sounds good. The addition of the Bowser music is something I could see a divide on, the normal Bowser track isn't too amazing and you generally aren't held up on Bowser long enough for much of the track to even play (much less how weird it sounds to have the music cut out and the start of it to play) but the final Bowser variant is such a good track that I think I'll defend it being added anyways.

Has anyone ever made webms of the difference? I played both the other day just to see and still didn’t see a MAJOR difference. Mario doesn’t poke through the block in either just rebounds slightly quicker. Maybe it’s a momentum thing, I couldn’t be arsed experimenting further

>> No.7296135

>>7296012
On All Stars if you run and jump to a brick, the one in front of you will stop you from running, as Mario goes up to about 1/5 of the broken brick. On NES Mario continues running as he bounces back as soon as the brick is smashed and does not colide with the brick in front of it. Not a major problem, just a difference, and I'm sure if it was the other way around All Stas=rs would still be criticised.

Neither. Super Mario All-Stars remake is identical in terms of gameplay to the original game sans the brick physics thing, (which apatch addresses) bugs, and other very minor things.

It's really a question of which aesthetics people prefer. Which obviously is more a question of subjective tastes that intrinsic qualities of either of the two games.

I don't care for Super Mario All-Stars at all compared to the original NES/Famicom games. I'll go with them instead every time.
