2007 was also the year that the internet became shit

>> No.7292136

The internet really messed things up, but there's still plenty of great games. Even moreso if you get a PC and discover peoples passion projects that would never even get shared or published if not for the internet and being able to just self-publish on steam or post your work online. At least that's one of the few good things the internet did for gaming.

>> No.7292142

2007 was probably the year when it started, although I'd probably say thay it was much more obvious around 2010. It's not just a matter of good ot bad games, though: the search for "respect" of the videogame medium, the rise of realism in games, DLCs, microtransactions, virtue signalling and political agendas everywhere, japanese games being less relevant, etc. The only good thing about it has been that we have been able to play and enjoy more classic games to avoid modern crap.

Basically 2001 with the end of the dreamcast and neo-geo. Ps2 and xbox were definately souless, Gamecube had soul but wii didn't. Wii U brought soul back for a bit but the general rule is most games don't have soul, a few do but its not the general rule.

Smash bros, vietiful joe, sonic even resident evil 4 at the time, they were soulful games from around the 2000's on the cube.

I think psp and 3ds were soulful aswell.

Midtown madness 3 on xbox, souless compared to 1 and 2 on win 98. I think games being souless is symptom of people not wanting to admit the really games are toys, Nintendo does seem to treat their systems and games like toys which is what gave the wii u soul.

Just because something is souless doesn't mean it is necessarily bad either and something with a lot of soul can actually be bad too.

The xbox 360 standarized the interconnection between internet points and gaming. Its been standarized ever since but it was just another effect of culture in general going to shit and both gaming and the internet becoming adopted by normies. There was a huge lowering on the standards of thee lowest common denominator user for both, since then we only saw games becoming more and more like AAA hollywood garbage thats expensive but always the same. Lots of genres that before 2007 were thriving became niches and focus was on online points, movie games, and standarized gameplay across all genres to fit the gta clone formula.

Some good points there. Yes, the decline started right with the new century. A lot of classic companies from the 80s and 90s suddenly ended their life or just got merged into another company: Data East, Irem, Technosoft, Westone, Taito, etc. SNK and SEGA got bankrupt and almost died, while Konami started their huge downfall too. Treasure got their last hits and became gradually irrelevant.

Arcade culture started to fade out in the west and 2D art was almost abandoned by all the major developers. Basically, a lot of really huge changes happened at the start of the new century that got gradually worse eventually until reaching the 2010s. There has been some really good games in those 2 decades, though, not everything has been awful. As you said, portable gaming was pretty good and soulful: GBA, NDS, PSP, etc, which might be because those systems got a lot of oldschool style of games during their lifetime.

Modern buisness model stripped the soul out of videogames. Mobile is the culprit. Also mobile killed japanese arcades, which is the most soulful thing.

Gen 8 was the end of an era. All the consoles pushed out repetitive nonsense and basically the ps4 and Xbox one were basically just cash grabs, Nintendo began making everything they touched "limited edition" to the point that basically there wasn't a couple of consoles to be interested in and it seemed the ps4 and Xbox one did it too, a little less though. You could blame gen7 though as the 360 had too much crappy peripherals like the Wii and basically the two consoles were quite generic and dull as interfaces. Only thing there is I can't say the same about the ps3 because it just had something to it that made it special.

2006-2007 was the point where it became impossible to deny that the casual gamer market had taken priority over the core gamer market.

Guitar Hero and its retarded peripherals were selling like hotcakes and the Wii was barely any worthwhile hardware upgrade over the Gamecube, yet was was still flying off the shelves to sell retarded waggle shit to normies and wine moms.

It was always going to happen, though. When sports games started to take off in the 4th gen, the industry got a clear signal that more than just pasty faced nerds and and autistic hamplanets were throwing down cash on their games.

By the 5th gen, the sports games were obviously big money and here to stay, and with Parappa, and then Dance Dance Revolution, the beginning of the end for 'core' games as the economic focus was already there.

/vr/ will hate to hear it, but I actually think that Halo and CoD are the only things that convinced the industry not to completely abandon making actual games.

I don't know if its an american thing, but I grew up in the 80s and 90s and I remember that pretty much all sorts of people played videogames, even if it were just a few compared to nowadays. In fact, I don't remember seeing a single typical nerd in my whole childhood, and arcades were considered pretty popular places for kids and young adults to hang up to. Games those days were seen as something a bit like punk, which adults couldn't understand and feared, so a lot of popular and rebellious kids played them too.

well as a pc and 6th gen gamer I say after 2010.

- Multiplayer FPS doesn't have the dedicated server feature or LAN
- Nobody produces arcades anymore
- Openworld and RPG mechanics on almost every game
- World of Warcraft is mainstream and blizzard blast the MMORPG market
- There are western games released whit "free 2 play" formula; worse case: an online game become F2P.
- 7th and 8th gen console are boring because they try to follow the PC experience (less split-screen games)
- GTA IV pushed the franchise in a likely setting (from GtaSA I moved to Saints Row 2)

Not him, but the "arcade game" paradigm died out. For example, in the 90s, even in games that were not arcade ports, you often had score, lives, continues, etc. That gradually disappeared during the PS1 era, and it was completely over with the PS2. From this point "video games" meant something else. And the major games stopped being arcade-like games (Street Fighter II, Sonic, etc.) to become something more cinematic, adult, immersive (Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, etc.).

The majority of the PS3 and 360 libraries were soulless but the following generation got back on the right track. Games like Sonic Mania and A Hat in Time do a great job taking what made old games good and creating something new with it. There are games like Gravity Rush that are completely new but do something unique and fun enough to make them feel like something that belongs in a previous generation. Series like Devil May Cry are still getting new entries that feel just as good as if not better than the originals. A ton of new fighting games are out or coming out soon that are doing excellent things for the genre. Just because last gen everything was a brown first person shooter or a movie game doesn't mean there aren't still plenty of soul-filled games coming out. I might get more use out of my Genesis and PS2 than my PS4 and Switch but it really isn't that hard to find a good current gen game. There was just as much garbage coming out for older consoles, and just because bad games are what's mostly popular nowadays doesn't mean that bad games are the only games that come out

Popular music has been shit since the early 90s. Just because good music is rarely on the radio anymore doesn't matter since the internet exists and plenty of good songs come out elsewhere

>> No.7307002

The push for 3D gaming was a terrible time. I mean, a lot of those games have a quirky appeal but it was actually shit living through that period. The quality of 2D games was finally reaching kino levels on 32bit systems just as they were abandoned for wonky 3D games.

However, the seventh generation of gaming (Wii, PS3, Xbox 360) is the single most soulless generation. I thank the seventh gen for making retro gaming accessible again but the price was a full 10 years of motion controls and Call of Duty clones. I will not miss it and think gaming is actually better today.

not always. you can have a lot of people who have god awful childhoods but have fond memories for the brief periods of good that took place outside of it all.
its more of a matter of what is encouraged around the time they speak of, and how it would've related to them and people they knew, compared to those exact same kinds of people dealing with a different sociopolitical situation we have now.

music is arguably different now and people partied differently back then compared to now, and sometimes, thats worth mentioning. and its important to see how adults were looking out on the world at the time too to gain an idea of what people were actually thinking.

its easy to just put people into a box and paint it as boomervszoomervsmillenial but if anything, such categorisations ignores the overarching shit that goes on day to day and how it affects all 3 of those kinds of people during that timeframe.

> yet you talk like a commie about muh capitalism bad

You see, I respect commies as enemies because at least they recognize that the current system is fucked to its core and they want to fight to change it; I have less than zero respect for bootlicking liberals who’s only game plan for the future is to deepthroat senile fucking Joe Biden. I mean, commies had Stalin and Mao, who do you have? Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton lmao.

I’m not even white (I know it’s so schooling and scary when a brown man isn’t kissing your ass, I mean you faggots got on your knees for us and everything) and nazi means nothing at this point.

> army as the wellfare queen

Do you expect me to have a knee jerk reaction and start waving the flag? Fuck the military industrial complex, they’re the ones who force your worldview on other nations you stupid fuck. Anytime a country decides they don’t want to be part of the globalist toilet, America bombs them into the Stone Age or blockades them off from the rest of the world. I’d take Saddam, Gaddaffi, and Putin over any gutless piece of shit with a D next to their name in congress.

>muh farm peepeepoopoo

That’s such a small part of the equation as to why the US economy and world order is fucked (and most farming is automated and done by multimillionaire agribusinesses, not random yokels you uneducated fuck). The whole neoliberal system that allows you to sit in your cuckbox apartment and stream your faggot shows was built off of third world slave labor and violence. Why don’t we talk about that over fucking farm policy?
