Got super star soldier done. Took me emulating the game and savestating the boss rush to practice and then going back to original hardware and doing it, still didn't 1cc it though.

I only play Shmups to enjoy them though but I find it very hard to keep playing a game over months and months - I barely manage a week of sustained playing of a Shmup - I am terrible for sticking to a game and I will go and play RPGs instead.

This is me in a number of ways, though when I get tired of one game, I usually just move on to the next. I'm not a completionist in games, so for me, it's the goal of "beating" the game, even if that means continuing over and over until the end, just to see the main campaign. Unless the extra stuff is even more fun than the main game, I usually skip it, or just dip my toe in the water, get a feel for it, and move on. My game collection is way too large to play any one game too long, with VERY few exceptions (erm, Breath of the Wild). With shmups, I go for a little while, have some fun with it, and then put it away, often not progressing enough to truly 1CC a game. My issue is, when I revisit a game, I do that - pull the game out, play it for a few days, hit my usual wall, and then get frustrated and not persist with it, put it away, and move on to the next game, shmup or not.

To beat ANY shmup:

1) Practice one level at a time
2) Within that level, use save states on parts that kill you
3) Practice the save state until you can get past it 5x in a row without dying or bombing
4) When you've mastered all save states in a level, get through the whole level 3-5x in a row without dying
5) Start partial runs: So if you've mastered the first 3 levels, make sure you can beat level 3 AFTER beating level 1 and 2 and not just when you're practicing the level by itself with everything memorized more solidly.
6) Go for the 1cc and/or high score.

This seems grindy, but the trick is to enjoy practice and understand that practice/play are the same thing depending on your mindset. Ultimately, this will get you through these games FASTER than just mindlessly repeating the 60-70% you can always beat while repeatedly dying at the same bosses or sections because you didn't focus enough on those hard parts.

This method of taking small, difficult chunks at a time also works well for practicing music if you play an instrument.

This is a genre that very few people end up liking these days (they just prefer to play other games), however it's not like people are unaware of them; they just don't care about them. Some try the games and join the communities, but their honeymoon phase with the genre tends to end rather quickly. However, they stick around; it's cool to them to feel part of this small corner of the video games space, even if they just care about the friends they made along the way and not shmups anymore. This explains why 99% of the people in communities don't play shmups, or barely.
Here's the more sinister part: there are a few guys that want to become e-celebs and they enter shmups due to a lack of competition, since there's no real audience. They recognize the nonplayer situation, and what they do is pander to the biggest group (i.e. the nonplayers) in order to try to gather attention and Patreon money (even if not much). Narcissistic people that want to be the center of something.
Then, a few of the legit players are lonely people and just wish for the scene to be active at all costs, even if none of them around them give an actual shit about what they're playing, so they go along with all of this.
So this is how you end up with this situation. The nonplayers aka the jarpigs have been pandered to so much, they get defensive when someone even questions if this situation is how shmup communities should be handled.
So far, the only community that has fought against this is Gus's "Ultramania STG Streams" server, which is a public server strictly about shmup talk, no off-topic allowed, not even secondary talk (a typical issue you see with Touhou people that just want to talk about waifus or music while they don't give a shit about the games). It's been succesful despite several of their key members being shunned or straight up banned elsewhere for taking a stance against the jarpigs. It's small which shouldn't be surprising considering the subject matter, but active.

The success of this server proves that the jarpig manipulation of "if you get rid of our spaces within the scene, you'd kill the community" is, that, manipulation so they can continue to be posers. If anything, under these rules actual shmup talk shines the most, as it's not buried under a lot of crap, which makes many actual players not even want to bother participating.
