Whats your personal limit on buying retro shit?

>> No.7274801

I dont buy retro hardware anymore, so 0. Last game I bought was Chrono Cross and the disc stopped working like 10 hours in and it really pissed me off. I bought a copy of RE2 a few years go but haven't even played it, would rather just emulate the GC port with the ML upscale mod.

Kiosk collecting isn’t for the average video gamer who complains about $80 gamecube games. I look out for kiosks and have 4 of them to my name hooked up in my garage, never payed more for $2000 for one(pokemon snap blockbuster kiosk), and lowest I paid was $700 for a sega genesis kiosk. Different price points for different collectors, don’t get angry because you find it too expensive. It’s not a stupid decision for me to buy stuff like this, but that’s because I can afford it. I also buy video games collections from eBay, collectors getting out of the game, ect, if you wanna start talking *money*, I’ve dropped well over $10,000 on a single collection before. Seriously please stop complaining about things you can’t afford. Most retro game collectors are like this, poor and picky, and complain about spending 60 bucks for tmnt on snes. The amount you're willing to spend really defines a collection and a collector.

If you only want to pay miniscule amounts for old games because for some reason these desirable luxury objects have no value, your collection will be small and likely feature only one or two uncommon games you've been lucky to find at Goodwill.

If you're willing to pay more, you can have a large collection full of hard to find games. These things are collectables, they have secondary market value.

We're too far out from a lot of generations now to be able to find stuff cheap at garage sales/thrift stores. I saw a copy of Snatcher go up for sale this summer, being sold by someone who didn't know what it was. I offered 500, a low ball but a lot of money for those not in the know. I didn't even get a response, this person was so overwhelmed by messages.

If you want to collect games on the cheap, PS4 is the thing right now.

Also for everyone advocating for emulation, that shit is full of inaccuracies and is at best a pale imitation of a true experience.

>> No.7276601

>>7274771
I made a list of games and consoles I want to collect and I created a system on numbers which I've followed since I was 14. An example is like: number of the day (sunday) is 48, number of the day (monday) is 49 then when the week ends I reset it to like. Sunday number is 49 and monday's 50. I use those numbers in everyday things like prices on eBay. I use that number as a ceiling and go down by three dollars every search. Also I buy new retro stuff everytime I beat a game or get big bucks or it's close to Christmas, Birthday and Midyear.
Why yes I am autistic, how could you tell?

Are off the top of my head? If we're talking about owning games physically that are also available on PC/PSN, the PS4 is the far superior choice to the Xbone just because of the exclusives I listed.

People are bitching too much about prices. Yeah they went up because millennials are having midlife crises, but unless youre trying to nab Earthbound or something incredibly rare, old carts are still $20-$60, which is about the same price you'd pay for the average game today anyways (and lets be fair, those old games youre paying $60+ for are better and more replayable than most of the shovelware garbage pushed these days, and it doesnt even need an online subscription either.) Even the most broke among us can afford a classic console.

I'd only consider sealed OG boxes and arcade cabinets to be enthusiast-only tier, and theyre best left in ownership of professionals who know how to maintain and repair them anyways.

Couple reasons:

1. Late SNES release - January 1996
2. Capcom was slowing down shipping on the 16 bit titles as the generation came to a close
3. It was a fairly expensive release - 74 bucks, which adjusted for inflation is about 122 USD today.

A lack of interest, low supply and relatively high price for a game that was released on a five year old console.

At the moment, $0. I live in a 400sqft studio apartment, so due to the lack of space I have only a large flatscreen television I use that fills up most the room along with my bed and furniture. I had to sell my entire gaming collection ~4 years ago for a few thousand dollars to move out, it sucks but at the time they were mostly collecting dust.

My dream would be to have shitloads of money so I could just buy new-in-box consoles and games and then open them up and slowly go through them again in my own custom gaming room with equally pristine equipment. But I'm poor as fuck so that won't be happening any time soon if ever.

fuck, it just keep getting worse as the things i want are more obscure. ODEs and flashcarts are a godsend since i don't give a shit about collecting but those are expensive too.
Some big ticket items from 2019-2020

Vectrex + Flash Cart + All Overlays: $500
McWill Lynx II + Flash cart: $300
Boxed Complete Neo Geo: $530
x68000 Complete w/ Monitor: $600 (shipped from Japan)
MSX2 x3, MSX, MSX2+: $550 (I kept finding good deals on them from overseas or locally. Some had PSUs or controllers I wanted. )

I'm eyeing Virtual Boys now. I have a flash cart coming in a few months but those have been memes for awhile so they're pretty expensive.

really about $500 for a single piece of hardware is my limit and that's only maybe 1-2 times a year. I can say i do enjoy all these things and exploring less popular libraries is a blast. learning a little Japanese has been really fun.

You can blow some big bucks going really deep on a single console especially if you want to do a full game set attempt.
I considered NES back in the early 2000s when it was doable but i've since sold most all my games. Biggest sale regret was a boxed complete NES ROB set I sold in the early 2010s. I got good money for it and I hav plenty of NES stuff. I didn't like the whole box collector shit but the actual ROB is such a cool thing to look at and fiddle with. I bet I couldn't get a loose one for less than $200 today.

Thanks for reading my blog.

Thanks anon. I do have a Roxio capture card already that looks similar, but I was never impressed with the video quality, would this thing be a substantial upgrade or should I stick to what I already have?

I haven't really had the opportunity to set one, really. I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere, so the closes place I can find retro vidya is the local pawn shop, which I check regularly. It's great because they don't give a fuck what they have, as long as it works and they sell it for more than they bought it for. Last time I was there, I picked up a pristine copy of Conker's BFD for $50, a Super Game Boy for $15, and a japanese Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland for $5.
The nearest actual retro store is a 3-hour drive away, and I only stop there if I roadtrip with one of my buddies to offload MTG cards we don't need to card shops around the city. I also refuse to buy shit online because fuck scalpers and fuck chinks taking 2 months to ship a couple old games.

I have a 3ds that I play a lot of nintendo consoles on. I plan on getting a psvita for psp/vita/ps1 gaming. I would buy an emulation handheld once one is good enough for ps2 emulation. Otherwise I don't play games on my PC or use consoles. I just like handhelds

Bad collectors talk about what they paid
Good collectors talk about what they have found
Great collectors tell you about they’ve stolen

Don’t fuck with the virtual boy. The concept is neat but in playing anything on that gave me the worst fucking migraine after 30 minutes to an hour.

Couldn’t even enjoy the games I was retro collecting.

buy?

>> No.7289569

Max I've paid was 60€ for Snatcher, so I guess that's my limit.
Actually stopped buying retro when prices skyrocketed, now I only buy either cheap stuff or good opportunities.
Bought 2 Gameboy cartidges the other day that actually came boxed with everything, it was a nice suprise and probably my best haul in years.
Thankfully there's still consoles you can get for cheap.

Emulation is superior, if you want the original hardware go for it, but play retro video games. End of discussion.
