Is it safe to buy disc based games? How long are they going to last? I’d hate to spend $500 on a game that’s stored on disc and it no longer works in 2025. What’s the time limit on these?

Anon I just got like 20 games for my ps1 emulator dont waste money on games like that. It's not like you can even support the original devs at this point. I just got a ps1 emulator working on my phone. Dont waste your time with discs at this point.

Dunno man but in the comic book world they have this sealed plastic things where they preserve the old valuable comics. They are made of solid transparent plastic, need to break it with a hammer to open it, maybe we need something like that for games.

Like anything it comes down to storage quality and how much care you take. I have CDs from the 1980’s that still work fine, but I’m borderline OCD when it comes to organization and cleanliness.

>> No.7280770

Don't treat them like a nigger, care for them and they will most likely outlive you.

What do you mean care for a disc? Tuck it in and kiss it goodnight ? Fuck you I’m doing emulation only now

Don't spend more than $100 on a game ever. As far as "disc rot" or whatever meme you are falling for it depends of many factors outside of your power but generally speaking it doesn't happen. I have over 500+ games some from early sega CD and not a single has disc rot, apparently sunlight has some impact.

You should assume that your consoles will fail way before your games do. And you should also assume that you will fail way before any of the meme disc disease hits your library, especially if you are living an unhealthy lifestyle.

tldr; it's extremely safe to buy disc based games as long as reasonably priced and in good condition, stop eating like shit, get good sleep, hit the gym

you're buying the physical media, not the game

you should be storing these in a freezer to stop them from degrading and only play games via emulation

So are you planning to open a museum or some kind of archive?

The average onions just wants to coomlect because the youtube onions told him to. Which keeps the game from serving it's true purpose, being played, because now it's sitting in some fat unhealthy bald guy's basement collecting dust until he dies and his relatives sell it all to some local pawn shop at which point someone might actually play it.

I don't play games until they're retro and by that point I can just emulate them

>> No.7280894

>>7280884
So, can we agree that games are made to be played and since they have a limited lifespan it's important that they are in the hands of people that actually play them as opposed to coomlect?

Fuck boomers, fuck coomlectors, fuck the niggers who don't think SH PS1 is the best SH in the series and the best horror game ever made.

I pirate all my shit but only by retro games I have personal feelings towards. I think there's a psychological aspect to owning a full copy with manual and shit of a game you like that emulation can't replicate. I often catch myself bringing the disc and reading the manual for games I own that I'm emulating.

>> No.7280914

just emulate the manual if you want to be all homosexual about it

That's just not how it works my dude, next time you're at your local pawnshop grab a DC game and check if you can emulate getting the game from your shelf, putting it in the console hearing "KRRRRRRRR KRRRR VRRRRRRR" while reading the 23 pages manual explaining important gameplay concepts that are never mentioned in the game.

Do you own a VR headset? I have an Index and been an early enthusiast, the truth is that VR is still jittery and can't replicate all the other sense like touch, smell, temperature, proprioception. EmuVR is a novelty at best compared to the real thing but way too many people spent their entire lives in their room and don't know any better.

At least do it for another anon for no reason at all with nothing to gain: next time you see some retro shit, just buy it and make it work. It will make you happier than you imagine. Then think about emulation and how you can optimize your time because it's a pain in the ass to set up but way too rewarding to play on original hardware. Especially if you have hardware issues you have to fix on your own like a big boy. Learning to recap a board will be usefeul for other things.

I don't think that works for discs. They would still rot inside the case. Just like how most books are printed on paper with made with acid that will disintegrate eventually no matter what.

I see. Best thing I can think off is CDs and DVDs made to last and burn our games there. Maybe companies like Capcom and Sega could see a profit in "made to last" versions of their top classics.
