I’m also playing this right now. I was going to wait until I beat it to make a thread.
It’s pretty different from what I expected. I didn’t realize it really was going to be GnG in 3D. It’s also basically Medievil 3, down to the infuriating at times platforming.

The first one is even more GnG in 3D with lesser focus on combos and more on dodging enemies and the environment

Great game. A shame the sequel went the modern route instead.

Great? No way. It was good. I didn't like how cheap and underwhelming the final two bosses were.
Medievil was way better. Plus, you play as a skelly in that game.

Heard the sequel's good. Fixes most of the flaws from the first game, but the drawback is that you'll never get a piece of that Sophia ass. There was supposed to be a 3rd game which looked radically different, but the Capcom studio running the Maximo games was shut down.

The first game is probably the best. Two is cool, but does that platformers sequel thing where they add gimmick levels. The concept is fun, though.
I will be honest with you. The controls are awful, the camera is not your friend, and the platforming will make you seethe at times; but it’s one of those games that’s more than the sum of its parts. The atmosphere is cool, the world is cool, and the music is lovely.
To go beyond retro, I’ve never played Resurrection but what I’ve seen looks bad and it’s generally considered bad. The PS4 one is great, if you don’t mind some artistic liberties, and you can even unlock the original PS1 version in it. The game went a little more cartoony than I’d like, but it arguably matches the original concept art more than the PS1 version. The music has all been re-recorded and sounds amazing. The magic of involving key original people. Both of these are remakes of the first game, by the way.
