Those are both halfassed western redraws aping the worst (laziest) aspects of superhero comicbook design. Both series had gorgeously detailed fantasy art to begin with and it was tossed out in favor of "they need to look cooler" where "cooler" meant more sneering and lantern jaws at the cost of any kind of style or detail.

The graphics work in-game because Toriyama's complete inability to draw faces don't extend into the actual game beyond the menu pictures. Not to mention pretty much every character is a palette swap of a DBZ character. His artwork is fucking bad, and I hate it here and in Dragon Quest. His monsters and non-humans (Frog, Robo, Gato) are great, but fuck anyone that defends how he draws people, seriously. It's the one flaw I have with this otherwise superb game.

based on the FF3 US commercial, where Mog was a snarky dick with attitude holding auditions for monsters "bad enough" to be in the totally hardcore extreme RPG, it's probably supposed to be a MagRoader.

Keep in mind this was during Nintendo of America's massive "PLAY IT LOUD" campaign, where they fired back against Sega's attempt to claim the cool-kid vibe by dialing their extreme grungemeter up to 11. I agree and personally wonder why it is that they think North American audiences always want to see the characters on the cover of games.

Some games that have sold VERY well don't use any characters on their covers at all, they use symbols that are of relevance to the game plot or are a logo for the game series instead.

the earlier Zelda games (only recently they started throwing Link on the cover), The Elder Scrolls III-V, the Quake series, the original Half Life

Very simple box art, very classy, and all sold very well.

I don't get marketing pros sometimes, the cover should intrigue a potential buyer, make a potential buyer who's never heard of the game before want to pick it up and say "what's this?"

There's ton of games on a shelf. It's a contest to catch the kid's eye. Back then even more so since internet hype wasn't a thing. You had to rely on commercials, Nintendo Power and box art

>> No.729715

>>729651

It is, but I'll tell you what. Simple box designs catch my eye better.

I suppose showing 1 character from the game is alright but showing a cast "action" shot? Kind of a turn off.only times I ever picked up games that featured cover art with cast action shots were when I read about the game in Nintendo Power later and decided that sounds like a cool game after all (Breath of Fire, Lufia, etc)

Final Fantasy II and III had simple enough covers that they stood out, with a cool sounding name, so it intrigued you to pick up the box and look at the back and maybe rent it and then later buy it when you figured there's no way you're beating it after renting it just once and some faggot always deletes the save files on the rentals...

a game I'll never forget seeing for the first time was the original Legend of Zelda. I was about to turn 7 years old, it'd just released. I saw the box, it was GOLD which kind of stood out, it had a somewhat cryptic cover, using a shield with various symbols on it and you could see through a cutout that the cartridge was gold too. To a 6 year old that means this game must be good right? It's a gold cartridge, that makes it special somehow. So instant reaction is to pick that shit up and look at it, and it's describing grand adventures and showing a dude with a sword and shield, it had a great title the LEGEND of Zelda.

I took that box up to my parents and said this is what I want for my birthday, and sure enough that's what I got and I loved the shit out of that game.

That's some good marketing there. That box, title and description and the color gold sold that game to me, without a TV ad, magazine ad, no Nintendo power, no friend recommendations, nothin. Just box art.

a fairly simple box, white with the chrono trigger logo, with a SILHOUETTE of the Epoch flying into the distance either from the backgroud to foreground or foreground to background.

Just the shape. Something that keeps mystery in it until you flip it over to the back.

The cover should at most allude but not reveal too much.

I think revealing half of the party and one of the antagonists (at least for part of the game) spoils some of it.

Please tell me where's all this "detailed fantasy art" for Lufia & the Fortress of Doom. The closest think to official artwork for Lufia is the Japanese box, and there's nothing detailed or fantastic about it.

When "detailed fantasy art" was available in Rise of the Sinistrals, they did use it. I don't see anything wrong with having their own art for Lufia I. It's a lot better than the Japanese box, which is basically enlarged sprites turning their backs to the player.

Eh, I'm gonna put that into a "bad" category, have it myself. Its not -bad art-, but its completely unfaithful to the game, more so than the breath of fire 2 cover, which is just overly western-superheroed. PSIV's box art is downright misleading.
