My three favorites from the system. The Dreamcast has some good ones too, like Ikaruga. The NES has games like Gun Nac and some ports like Gradius and R-Type is on the Master System. Thunder Force, R-Type, Gradius and Raiden are probably the biggest and most popular series in the genre.

These are all pretty well known but I like 'em.

The hardware isn't best suited for shmups, but the system itself is good for the genre. All the big names in the genre are on it: Gradius, R-Type, Parodius, Raiden, Twinbee, Thunder Force, Aleste, Darius, etc, even if they're not the best versions.

The Mega Drive / Genesis is better than the SNES for shmups, but the lack of Konami games really hurts it. Also, the larger number of shmups comes with shovelware like X-Dazedly-Ray, Bio-Ship Paladin and Xenon 2: Megablast that the SNES lacks.
